Almost everything we consume online is free. Email, search, news, entertainment. But those apps on our phones aren't really free - so if we're not paying, who is? The surveillance marketing industry. It doesn't have to be this way. Web pioneers tried to invent new payment methods. Google's founders were dead set against advertising. Email wasn't always open to data mining. Yet here we are. Why? Because business can exploit our desire that "Information wants to be free", and yet someone needs to pay. It started way back in the early days of the republic, evolved with newspapers, radio and broadcast TV, and persists today online. Be the customer, not the product. In Free Is Bad, digital marketing entrepreneur John Marshall explores the web industry's early history and its search for viable business models. It's an investigation of how an evolutionary accident in the design of the web resulted in the ad-tech industry, enabling "free" as the default model for technology products like search and email, and for media products like news and entertainment. How did we become the product? Why that has led to the fracturing of society How new, people-first businesses are improving matters Free Is Bad offers not just a critique but optimism for a future where we control our online destiny. It also provides practical steps that will immediately improve your privacy and quality of information. Ultimately, we're better off being the customer and not the product, because Free Is Bad. This book explains why that is, and what you can do about it.

We may imagine the digital cloud as placeless, mute, ethereal, and unmediated. Yet the reality of the cloud is embodied in thousands of massive data centers, any one of which can use as much electricity as a midsized town. Even all these data centers are only one small part of the cloud. Behind that cloud-shaped icon on our screens is a whole universe of technologies and cultural norms, all working to keep us from noticing their existence. Hu shows that the cloud grew out of such older networks as railroad tracks, sewer lines, and television circuits. He describes key moments in the prehistory of the cloud, from the game Spacewar as exemplar of time-sharing computers to Cold War bunkers that were later reused as data centers. Countering the popular perception of a new "cloudlike" political power that is dispersed and immaterial, Hu argues that the cloud grafts digital technologies onto older ways of exerting power over a population. But because we invest the cloud with cultural fantasies about security and participation, we fail to recognize its militarized origins and ideology. Moving between the materiality of the technology itself and its cultural rhetoric, Hu's account offers a set of new tools for rethinking the contemporary digital environment.

"There comes a time in the life of a subject when someone steps up and writes the book about it. AIQ explores the fascinating history of the ideas that drive this technology of the future and demystifies the core concepts behind it; the result is a positive and entertaining look at the great potential unlocked by marrying human creativity with powerful machines." (Steven Levitt, co-author of Freakonomics) From two cutting-edge data scientists comes a fascinating audiobook that tells listeners what they need to know in order to understand how intelligent machines are changing the world and how we can use this knowledge to make better decisions in our own lives. Dozens of times per day, we all interact with intelligent machines that are constantly learning from the wealth of data now available to them. These machines, from smart phones to talking robots to self-driving cars, are remaking the world of the 21st century in the same way that the Industrial Revolution remade the world of the 19th century. AIQ, by Nick Polson and James Scott, is based on a simple premise: If you want to understand the modern world, then you have to know a little bit of the mathematical language spoken by intelligent machines. AIQ will teach listeners that language - but in an unconventional way, anchored in stories rather than mathematics. Listeners will meet a fascinating cast of historical characters who have a lot to teach about data, probability, and better thinking. Along the way, listeners will see how these same ideas are playing out in the modern age of big data and intelligent machines - and how these technologies will soon help them to overcome some of their built-in cognitive weaknesses, giving them a chance to lead happier, healthier, more fulfilled lives. Their idea was simple. Four NYU undergrads wanted to build a social network that would allow users to control their personal data instead of surrendering it to big businesses like Facebook. They called it Diaspora. In days they raised $200,000, and reporters, venture capitalists, and the digital community's most legendary figures were soon monitoring their progress. Max dreamed of being a CEO. Ilya was the idealist. Dan coded like a pro. And Rafi tried to keep them all on track. But as the months passed and the money ran out, the Diaspora Four fell victim to errors, bad decisions, and their own hubris. In November 2011, Ilya committed suicide. Diaspora has been tech news since day one, but the story reaches far beyond Silicon Valley to the now urgent issues about the future of the Internet. With the cooperation of the surviving partners, New York Times best-selling author Jim Dwyer tells a riveting story of four ambitious and naive young men who tried to rebottle the genie of personal privacy - and paid the ultimate price.

Agile Values and Principles for a New Generation “In the journey to all things Agile, Uncle Bob has been there, done that, and has the both the t-shirt and the scars to show for it. This delightful book is part history, part personal stories, and all wisdom. If you want to understand what Agile is and how it came to be, this is the book for you.” (Grady Booch) “Bob’s frustration colors every sentence of Clean Agile, but it’s a justified frustration. What is in the world of Agile development is nothing compared to what could be. This book is Bob’s perspective on what to focus on to get to that ‘what could be.’ And he’s been there, so it’s worth listening.” (Kent Beck) “It’s good to read Uncle Bob’s take on Agile. Whether just beginning, or a seasoned Agilista, you would do well to read this book. I agree with almost all of it. It’s just some of the parts make me realize my own shortcomings, dammit. It made me double-check our code coverage (85.09 percent).” (Jon Kern) Nearly 20 years after the Agile Manifesto was first presented, the legendary Robert C. Over the course of a generation, algorithms have gone from mathematical abstractions to powerful mediators of daily life. Algorithms have made our lives more efficient, more entertaining, and, sometimes, better informed. At the same time, complex algorithms are increasingly violating the basic rights of individual citizens. Allegedly anonymized datasets routinely leak our most sensitive personal information; statistical models for everything from mortgages to college admissions reflect racial and gender bias. Meanwhile, users manipulate algorithms to "game" search engines, spam filters, online reviewing services, and navigation apps. Understanding and improving the science behind the algorithms that run our lives is rapidly becoming one of the most pressing issues of this century. Traditional fixes, such as laws, regulations, and watchdog groups, have proven woefully inadequate. Reporting from the cutting edge of scientific research, The Ethical Algorithm offers a new approach: a set of principled solutions based on the emerging and exciting science of socially aware algorithm design. Michael Kearns and Aaron Roth explain how we can better embed human principles into machine code - without halting the advance of data-driven scientific exploration. Quality management principles to ensure business success. The success - or failure - of all businesses largely depends on the quality of the products and services they supply. This, in turn, depends on finding the right balance between investment and returns. Develop goods and services that are of too low a standard and no one will buy them; put too much into creating high-quality products and services and you may price yourself out of the market in an attempt to recover your costs. This is where quality management comes in. A quality management system (QMS) establishes process-driven methods of producing and delivering products and services with consistent results. Assuming your QMS processes are effective, your products and services will meet the expected quality levels every time, giving you greater control over production costs and increasing customer satisfaction. Currently used by more than 1.1 million organizations worldwide, the international standard ISO 9001:2015 is the world’s most established quality framework. It specifies the best-practice requirements for a QMS that organizations can use to: Demonstrate their ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable regulatory requirements Enhance customer satisfaction Manage costs and improve efficiency An ISO 9001-compliant QMS is adaptable, continually improves to meet organizational and market requirements, and includes processes for the assurance of conformity and applicable regulatory requirements. ISO 9001:2015 - A Pocket Guide is a handy reference audiobook that provides an overview of the ISO 9001 quality management standard. It includes: A brief history of quality management and ISO 9001 Useful definitions of ISO 9001 terminology A discussion of the requirements of the Standard, including an in-depth examination of clauses four to 10 of ISO 9001, which specify the requirements for a QMS Some of the myths about ISO 9001 certification This is the perfect introduction to the Standard and will help ensure the quality of your products and services, increase customer satisfaction, and enhance your business’s efficiency. Buy your copy of ISO 9001:2015 - A Pocket Guide now to learn how an ISO 9001:2015-compliant QMS will help your business thrive.
