Fracktured: A Deklan Falls Case File

Summary

The second novel in the Deklan Falls mystery series. Deklan Falls, private investigator and former cop, is sober for the first time in a long time. These days he's a millionaire, but also still works for the DA's office in the Ohio city of Oldtowne. He works to try to clean up the police force while also hoping to stop the coming gang war that threatens to destroy the city. It's a tough life, but he likes it that way.   Now, a billionaire industrialist is bringing the process known as fracking to Oldtowne with the promise of jobs and prosperity. Not everyone is happy about that, and the earthquakes Oldtowne has been having seem to indicate they might have reason to not be happy. Threats have been made, and the DA wants Deklan Falls to figure out who's threatening and why.   Then someone ends up dead. Deklan soon finds that, as per usual, nothing is clear cut in Oldtowne. Oldtowne is far more dangerous than even he imagined, and the people running it are more dangerous than the gangsters about whom he's been worried.

Cover art for LBJ's Neglected Legacy

LBJ's Neglected Legacy

Summary

During the five full years of his presidency (1964 - 1968), Lyndon Johnson initiated a breathtaking array of domestic policies and programs, including such landmarks as the Civil Rights Act, Head Start, Food Stamps, Medicare and Medicaid, the Immigration Reform Act, the Water Quality Act, the Voting Rights Act, Social Security reform, and Fair Housing. These and other "Great Society" programs reformed the federal government, reshaped intergovernmental relations, extended the federal government's role into new public policy arenas, and redefined federally protected rights of individuals to engage in the public sphere. Indeed, to a remarkable but largely unnoticed degree, Johnson's domestic agenda continues to shape and influence current debates on major issues such as immigration, health care, higher education funding, voting rights, and clean water, even though many of his specific policies and programs have been modified or, in some cases, dismantled since his presidency. LBJ's Neglected Legacy examines the domestic policy achievements of one of America's most effective, albeit controversial, leaders. Leading contributors from the fields of history, public administration, economics, environmental engineering, sociology, and urban planning examine 12 of LBJ's key domestic accomplishments in the areas of citizenship and immigration, social and economic policy, science and technology, and public management.

The Man Who Captured Washington

Summary

An Irish officer in the British Army, Major General Robert Ross (1766-1814) was a charismatic leader widely admired for his bravery in battle. Despite a military career that included distinguished service in Europe and North Africa, Ross is better known for his actions than his name: His 1814 campaign in the Chesapeake Bay resulted in the burning of the White House and Capitol and the unsuccessful assault on Baltimore, immortalized in “The Star Spangled Banner”. The Man Who Captured Washington is the first in-depth biography of this important but largely forgotten historical figure. Drawing from a broad range of sources, both British and American, military historians John McCavitt and Christopher T. George provide new insight into Ross’ career prior to his famous exploits at Washington, DC. In detailing this campaign, McCavitt and George clear up a number of misconceptions, including the claim that the British burned the entire city of Washington. Finally, the authors shed new light on the long-debated circumstances surrounding Ross’s death on the eve of the Battle of North Point at Baltimore. Ross’ campaign on the shores of the Chesapeake lasted less than a month, but its military and political impact was enormous.

Obama on the Home Front

Summary

The record of any American President attracts attention, but Barack Obama, the first African-American president in the nation's 240-year history, is of special interest. Obama came into office as the economy was careening into the worst downturn since the Great Depression. On the political front, he would be challenged by the intense congressional polarization faced by Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, exacerbated by the rise of the Tea Party movement. In this comprehensive assessment of domestic policymaking, John D. Graham considers what we may learn from the Obama presidency about how presidents can best implement their agendas when Congress is evenly divided. What did Obama pledge to do in domestic policy and what did he actually accomplish? Why did some initiatives succeed and others fail? Did Obama's policies contribute to the losses experienced by the Democratic Party in 2010 and 2014? In carefully documented case studies of economic policy, health care reform, energy and environmental policy, and immigration reform, Graham asks whether Obama was effective at accomplishing his agenda. Counterfactuals are analyzed to suggest ways that Obama might have been even more effective than he was and at less political cost to his party.
