Summary

Following a miraculous resurrection, Fred - the half-human/half-dungeon-core hybrid - managed to reunite with Deecy, his helpful dire wolf guide and companion. Not only that, but he was able to perform an equally miraculous resurrection of Eisa, the human woman that had professed her love for him just moments before the tragic event of their deaths. But would she be the same as she was before, or would she be forever changed by the unique process that had brought her back? Accompanied by a friend from Fred’s past, the group journeys to the west in search of the Core Power Guild and the townspeople of Gatecross. Along the way, Eisa discovers the strange new abilities that she now possesses - abilities that are very similar to Deecy’s, the shape-shifting dire wolf that travels with them. Eventually, they arrive in the Deadlands, a constantly decaying landscape filled with undead monsters of all types; information on the Guild’s whereabouts are easily found, but Fred and his friends aren’t forgotten by the nature and earth cores that he had inadvertently destroyed. Is anywhere in the world safe enough to create a dungeon that will keep his friends - and those he loves - protected from the threat that the Factions pose to them? Only the broken shards of the dungeon cores he left behind know the answer to that. Contains litRPG/gamelit elements such as statistics and leveling. No harems and no profanity.

American Legends: The Life of Walt Disney

Summary

"Over at our place, we're sure of just one thing: everybody in the world was once a child. So in planning a new picture, we don't think of grown-ups, and we don't think of children, but just of that fine, clean, unspoiled spot down deep in every one of us that maybe the world has made us forget and that maybe our pictures can help recall." - Walt Disney A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. When it comes to the entertainment world and movie business, few names are as recognizable as Walt Disney, a versatile writer, producer, director, artist, and voice actor who literally turned his name into a billion-dollar business. Whether it was through the creation of iconic cartoons like Mickey Mouse or America's favorite theme parks, Disney and his assorted businesses have entertained countless numbers of people across the globe, particularly young kids. At a time when cinema was still a new and growing business, Disney staked out unique turf by bringing comics to life on screen, with his first big hit being Mickey Mouse. Of course, the popularity of Mickey Mouse helped spawn future creations like Donald Duck and Pluto, all household names that have long since become part of Americana and the English lexicon. Disney had already earned an Academy Award by 1932, but he was far from done, later introducing viewers to new characters like Snow White and continuing to make popular cartoon series for decades.

Spring 1865: The Closing Campaigns of the Civil War

Summary

When General Robert E. Lee fled from Petersburg and Richmond, Virginia in April 1865, many observers did not realize that the Civil War had reached its nadir. A large number of Confederates, from Jefferson Davis down to the rank-and-file, were determined to continue fighting. Though Union successes had nearly extinguished the Confederacy's hope for an outright victory, the South still believed it could force the Union to grant a negotiated peace that would salvage some of its war aims. As evidence of the Confederacy's determination, two major Union campaigns, along with a number of smaller engagements, were required to quell the continued organized Confederate military resistance. In Spring 1865, Perry D. Jamieson juxtaposes for the first time the major campaign against Lee that ended at Appomattox and General William T. Sherman's march north through the Carolinas, which culminated in General Joseph E. Johnston's surrender at Bennett Place. Jamieson also addresses the efforts required to put down armed resistance in the Deep South and the Trans-Mississippi. As both sides fought for political goals following Lee's surrender, these campaigns had significant consequences for the political-military context that shaped the end of the war, as well as Reconstruction. "A valuable addition to Civil War historiography." - Military Review "Readers looking for an authoritative single volume on the campaigns that ended the Civil War will want to consider Spring 1865." - Civil War Book Review "This book is highly recommended to any student of the Civil War." - Army History

Cover art for The Galveston Hurricane of 1900

The Galveston Hurricane of 1900

Summary

"First news from Galveston just received by train which could get no closer to the bay shore than six miles where the prairie was strewn with debris and dead bodies. About 200 corpses counted from the train. Large steamship stranded two miles inland. Nothing could be seen of Galveston. Loss of life and property undoubtedly most appalling. Weather clear and bright here with gentle southeast wind." (G. L. Vaughan, manager of Western Union in Houston, in a telegram to the chief of the US Weather Bureau on the day after the hurricane.) In 2005 the world watched in horror as Hurricane Katrina decimated New Orleans, and the calamity seemed all the worse because many felt that technology had advanced far enough to prevent such tragedies, whether through advanced warnings or engineering. At the same time, that response tends to overlook all of the dangers posed by hurricanes and other natural disasters. After all, storms and hurricanes have been wiping out coastal communities ever since the first humans built them. As bad as Hurricane Katrina was, the hurricane that struck Galveston, Texas, on September 8, 1900, killed several times more people, with an estimated death toll between 6,000 and 12,000 people. Prior to advanced communications, few people knew about impending hurricanes except those closest to the site. In the days before television or even radio, catastrophic descriptions were merely recorded on paper, limiting our understanding of the immediate impact. Stories could be published after the water receded and the dead were buried, but by then the immediate shock had worn off, and all that remained were memories of the survivors. Thus it was inevitable that the category 4 hurricane would cause almost inconceivable destruction as it made landfall in Texas, with winds at 145 miles per hour.

Back on the job after a year's suspension, former operative turned Federal Agent Garrison Chase is looking to redeem himself in the Bureau's eyes. When Chase comes face-to-face with the hitman, however, he's stunned to learn the man's identity. Even more shocking is who sent him. Suddenly Chase is plagued by questions. He doesn't know if his past is back to haunt him or if Stanley isn't as innocent as he seems. It's a race against time - and against powerful enemies he didn't know he had - to find the answers. Because if he doesn't find them quickly, Garrison Chase, and everyone he loves most in the world, are as good as dead. "Everything a suspense reader could desire from a thriller." Suitcase Charlie

Summary

"A tough-as-rusty-nails police procedural.... Each environment seems spookier than the last in a narrative driven by lyrical anxiety." (Tom Nolan, The Wall Street Journal) Chicago, May 30, 1956: On a quiet corner in a working-class immigrant neighborhood, a heavy suitcase is discovered on the sidewalk late at night. Inside is the body of a young boy, naked and hacked into pieces. Two hard-drinking Chicago detectives are assigned to the case: Hank Purcell, who still has flashbacks 10 years after the Battle of the Bulge, and his partner Marvin Bondarowicz, a wise-cracking Jewish cop who loves trouble as much as he loves booze. Their investigation takes them through the dark streets of Chicago in search of an even darker secret - as more and more suitcases turn up. "Every detective has a case that haunts him. For the Chicago cops Hank Purcell and Marvin Bondarowicz, that would be the 'dead kid in the suitcase' whose broken body epitomizes 'some kind of evil that was one-of-a-kind, fresh and original down to its buttons'. Guzlowski...lets us know that, back in the day, the city of Chicago was an all-around rough town." (Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times) "James Ellroy fans will appreciate this grim portrayal of the hunt for a serial killer, poet Guzlowski's first novel." (Publishers Weekly)        When the first boy was found in the first suitcase, Hank had thought it was the work of a crazy person who had gone off and done one terrible, crazy thing, and he figured the killer's madness would somehow suddenly dissolve and he'd never do such a thing again.        Hank was wrong.     That one terrible thing had happened again....
