Gandhi was an activist who helped India achieve independence from Britain, advocated for Indian rights in South Africa and at home, and improved the lives of India’s “untouchable” people. He did this all through nonviolent activism and thoughtful reflection on the nature of the injustices he saw around him. At his funeral, a million mourners followed the processional through the streets, yet millions more mourned worldwide.  This short biography reveals the life experiences that made Gandhi an inspirational peacemaker with an international legacy.

He spread the word that gold could be found in California soil, triggering a mass migration of workers who made the dangerous trek to California.  Most of the men who made their fortunes during this time were not the 49ers panning for gold, however, but men like Brannan who sold supplies to gold seekers. It was much the same in its earliest days, back when its Dutch rulers dubbed it New Amsterdam. The Dutch used it as the North American hub of their international trading routes that made them the financial leaders of the world.  The city was a haven of religious tolerance, cultural diversity, and women’s rights; in many ways, it was the original melting pot, where even slaves could earn their freedom. It later fell to the English and was renamed New York, but the city we know and love today maintains the spirit of its roots.

Summary

Concise and elegantly written nonfiction books and audiobooks help you learn the core subject matter in 20 percent of the time that it takes to read a typical book. Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each. The Scientific Revolution was a chain of events that unfolded during the 16th and 17th centuries, which brought about drastic changes in scientific thought. Modern science emerged as advances in astronomy, biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics transformed society’s perceptions of nature. The publication of Nicolaus Copernicus's On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres is considered by many as the beginning of the Scientific Revolution. Science achieved an autonomous status, distinct from philosophy and technology, with its own goals. An experimental method arose, which sought definite answers to questions articulated in the framework of specific theories, while new criteria for explanation were introduced. The completion of the Scientific Revolution is associated with Isaac Newton's Principia of 1687, which formulated the laws of motion and universal gravitation. The Scientific Revolution contributed to the progress of the Enlightenment in the 17th and 18th centuries by providing the philosophical tools necessary to challenge superstitious beliefs.

Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each. Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794 to 1877) was an American business magnate whose wealth and significance was rooted in the shipping industry and the development of railroads. Cornelius was also the patriarch of the extremely wealthy influential Vanderbilt family.  Vanderbilt was born in Staten Island, New York, in 1794. From a very early age, Vanderbilt quit school and worked on his father’s ferry in New York Harbour as a boy. Vanderbilt decided to start his own ferry service when he was 16 years old.  Soon after, Vanderbilt also took his first foray into trade, when he bought a schooner to transport, sell, and exchange merchandise. This business venture progressed very quickly, and Vanderbilt soon embraced the then cutting-edge steamboat which launched Vanderbilt into the big business of national and international shipping. During the 1850s and beyond, Vanderbilt took an interest in various US railroads, and bought, invested in, and developed various railroad routes, not only earning a vast amount of wealth but also, as some historians have stated, expanded America’s transportation infrastructure, transforming the very geography of the United States.  Vanderbilt died in 1877 from exhaustion, believed to have been brought on by various chronic disorders. Since his death, Vanderbilt has been recognized on various occasions for his contributions to US trade, transport and infrastructure, and philanthropy.

The Mexican-American War: A Divisive Expansion (HistoryIn60)

Summary

The conflict lasted less than two years, but the repercussions shook both nations for much longer. Having already lost Texas, the still newly independent Mexico was unprepared to defend their northern territories. The US plowed forward through to California with a sense of manifest destiny. While the US fought to gain more land, however, the war splintered the North and South; many Americans saw the war as an unjust theft of Mexican land and knew that the South’s reliance on slave labor would further establish this divisive injustice in America. While the US won this war, this short history reveals how the division it sowed among its people led to the Civil War, the bloodiest conflict in American history.

Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each. Akhenaten is one of ancient Egypt's most famous pharaohs both for fathering Tutankhaten and being the only pharaoh bold enough to discard thousands of years of religious history in favor of a new god, the Sun-Disk Aten. Akhenaten single-handedly altered Egypt more on its own than it would be changed until outside Greek influence took over. The impact his changes had on the religion of Egypt during and after his life cannot be understated, and the ways in which his predecessors worked to undo everything he had done is a remarkable act of revisionist history. The Sun-Disk Aten would live on and influence the world in surprising ways even after many believed it to have been purged from religious records.

Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each. Fred Astaire, 1899 to 1987, born Frederick Austerlitz, was an icon and extremely influential American dancer, singer, actor, and choreographer. Astaire was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Astaire's mother longed to escape Omaha since first moving there due to her husband’s work and she decided to use her children’s talents to enable her progression to bigger and better things. Astaire's sister, Adele, was a natural dancer and singer from very early on and Astaire’s mother planned a brother and sister act. Although Astaire refused dance lessons at first, he quickly picked up choreography and showed himself to be a natural talent; he also began learning various instruments. Soon after the family moved to New York and both the Astaire siblings’ show business careers quickly took off. Overall, Astaire’s stage and film and television career spanned 76 years. Astaire starred in more than 10 Broadway musicals, over 30 musical films, and numerous television specials, radio specials, and recordings. A highlight of his long career is often considered his time with RKO Radio Pictures and his many dances performances with Ginger Rogers between 1933 and 1939. Astaire died of pneumonia in 1987 at the age of 88 and his last request was to thank his fans for their years of support. Astaire influenced many of today’s most important dancers and choreographers and Gene Kelly, another famed star of filmed dance, famously stated that "the history of dance on film begins with Astaire".

Life is short, so explore a multitude of fascinating historical, biographical, scientific, political, and financial topics in only an hour each. Philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer wrote his best-known work in his 30s: The World as Will and Representation. He wrote his magnum opus so young because early in his career, he threw himself wholeheartedly into the life of a philosopher. While developing his theories, he both drew from and rejected many of the philosophies of his idealistic predecessor Immanuel Kant. He worked with an intense conviction, adopting staunch ideas that both established him as an important scholar and destroyed his personal life. This book explores the life and legacy of the man whose ideas live on in the work of so many, from Nietzsche to Tolstoy.
