Bob Hope (1903-2003) born Leslie Townes Hope, was an American comedian whose career spanned 78 years. During Hope’s long career, he achieved recognition as a stand-up comedian, a vaudevillian, an actor, a singer and dancer, an author, and even an athlete. Hope was born in the Eltham District of Southeast London, UK, and his family emigrated to the United States, settling in Cleveland, Ohio, when he was four years old. Before deciding on a career in show business, Hope took various jobs, from butcher’s assistant to professional boxer. Hope’s early performance career consisted of vaudeville acts, centered around comedic dancing and singing. Hope moved into radio and from there into a career making and starring in films (while still performing live on Broadway in the evenings). Hope is most well-known for a series of road movies with Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. Hope is also well-known in his later years for performing stand-up comedy for the US military around the world. In 2003, Hope died of pneumonia at the age of 100. When, on his deathbed, he was asked by his wife, Dolores, where he wanted to be buried, Hope told her, "Surprise me." Hope starred in more than 50 feature films, wrote 14 books, hosted the Academy Awards show 19 times (more than any other host), and performed more than 55 comedy tours for the United Service Organizations.

Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794 to 1877) was an American business magnate whose wealth and significance was rooted in the shipping industry and the development of railroads. Cornelius was also the patriarch of the extremely wealthy influential Vanderbilt family. Vanderbilt was born in Staten Island, New York, in 1794. From a very early age, Vanderbilt quit school and worked on his father’s ferry in New York Harbour as a boy. Vanderbilt decided to start his own ferry service when he was 16 years old. Soon after, Vanderbilt also took his first foray into trade, when he bought a schooner to transport, sell, and exchange merchandise. This business venture progressed very quickly, and Vanderbilt soon embraced the then cutting-edge steamboat which launched Vanderbilt into the big business of national and international shipping. During the 1850s and beyond, Vanderbilt took an interest in various US railroads, and bought, invested in, and developed various railroad routes, not only earning a vast amount of wealth but also, as some historians have stated, expanded America’s transportation infrastructure, transforming the very geography of the United States. Vanderbilt died in 1877 from exhaustion, believed to have been brought on by various chronic disorders. Since his death, Vanderbilt has been recognized on various occasions for his contributions to US trade, transport and infrastructure, and philanthropy.

Fred Astaire, 1899 to 1987, born Frederick Austerlitz, was an icon and extremely influential American dancer, singer, actor, and choreographer. Astaire was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Astaire's mother longed to escape Omaha since first moving there due to her husband’s work and she decided to use her children’s talents to enable her progression to bigger and better things. Astaire's sister, Adele, was a natural dancer and singer from very early on and Astaire’s mother planned a brother and sister act. Although Astaire refused dance lessons at first, he quickly picked up choreography and showed himself to be a natural talent; he also began learning various instruments. Soon after the family moved to New York and both the Astaire siblings’ show business careers quickly took off. Overall, Astaire’s stage and film and television career spanned 76 years. Astaire starred in more than 10 Broadway musicals, over 30 musical films, and numerous television specials, radio specials, and recordings. A highlight of his long career is often considered his time with RKO Radio Pictures and his many dances performances with Ginger Rogers between 1933 and 1939. Astaire died of pneumonia in 1987 at the age of 88 and his last request was to thank his fans for their years of support. Astaire influenced many of today’s most important dancers and choreographers and Gene Kelly, another famed star of filmed dance, famously stated that "the history of dance on film begins with Astaire".
