L'anziano pittore olandese Gerard Douw era il tutore della nipote Rose Veldrkaust che amava l'apprendista Godfrey Schalken all'insaputa dello zio. Un giorno si presentà alla bottega di Douw il misterioso Mynheer Valderhausen, un attempato gentiluomo che disse di aver incontrato Rose in una chiesa di Rotterdam e chiese la sua mano offrendo un'ingente somma in lingotti d'oro. Nonostante le proprie perplessità e l'istintiva avversione che provava per lo strano pretendente dai modi imperiosi e dall'aspetto orribile, Douw finì per acconsetire alle nozze, certo di assicurare alla nipote un agiatissimo avvenire. Le usanze dell'epoca, del resto, gli conferivano la possibilità di scegliere senza neanche consultare l'interessata. Il povero Schalken dovette assistere impotente al matrimonio della sua amata e dopo la cerimonia gli sposi partirono e di loro non si ebbero più notizie, ogni ricerca risultò vana. Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu è stato uno scrittore irlandese, ricordato soprattutto per le sue storie di fantasmi e di paranormale. Nel 1832 intraprende gli studi giuridici al Trinity College di Dublino, dove si laurea in giurisprudenza. Sei anni dopo viene pubblicato un suo racconto, The Ghost and the Bonesetter, nel Dublin University Magazine. Dopo la morte della sua amata moglie nel 1858, Le Fanu si chiude ancora di più in se stesso.
