Blockbuster Drugs

Summary

Blockbuster drugs - each of which generates more than a billion dollars a year in revenue - have revolutionized the industry since the early 1980s, when sales of Tagamet alone transformed a minor Philadelphia-based firm into the world's ninth-largest pharmaceutical company. In Blockbuster Drugs, Jie Jack Li tells the fascinating stories behind the discovery and development of these highly lucrative medicines, while also exploring the tumult the industry now faces as the "patent cliff" nears. Having spent most of his career in drug research and development, Li brings an insider's eye to the narrative as he recounts the tales of discovery behind such drugs as Tagamet, Zantac, Claritin, Prilosec, Nexium, Serouquel, Plavix, and Ambien. As he discusses each breakthrough, Li also shows that scientific research is filled with human drama - serendipitous discoveries, sudden insights, tense confrontations. For instance, the author tells of James Black, who persisted in the research that led to Tagamet-and that would ultimately win him a Nobel Prize - despite pressure from top executives to pursue "more profitable" work. The audiobook shows how research behind Prilosec combined creativity, international cooperation, and luck - the turning point being a chance encounter of American and Swedish scientists at a conference in Uppsala. There are also tales of fabulous rewards - George Rieveschl, the chemist who invented Benadryl, made a fortune on royalties - and of unjust desserts. Finally, Li shows that for the world's largest prescription drug manufacturers, recent years have been harrowing, as many popular drugs have come off patent in the U.S. market, meaning hundreds of billions of dollars in lost revenue. Anyone who enjoys tales of scientific discovery, or is curious about the history behind the prescriptions they take, or wants a revealing inside look at the pharmaceutical industry will find this audiobook well worth listening to.

Il diritto di morire

Summary

Summary

At a time when health care is going through major change, nurses - known for being highly capable in a crisis - are being forced to take on more responsibilities. In this increasingly stressful environment, nurses need new ways to make sure they are taking care of themselves so they don't succumb to the physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion of caring for everyone else. Nursing from Within: A Fresh Alternative to Putting Out Fires and Self-Care Workarounds offers the innovative solutions today's nurses need. Although it outlines the problems nurses face, this book is not about trying to change the working environment. Rather, it's about altering inner perspectives. With boundless energy and passion, it addresses an element that's largely missing from nursing self-care programs focusing on diet and health: the spiritual self. Taking a holistic approach that incorporates spiritual and energy principles such as reiki, Nursing from Within teaches you how to connect with your authentic self. Fascinomas

Summary

Fascinomas - fascinating medical mysteries. A paralyzed teen recovers overnight. A woman complains her breast implants speak. A man and his dog become gravely ill at the exact same time. These strange, real-life cases and many more can be found in author and physician Clifton K. Meador's newest collection, Fascinomas. Combining the word fascinating with the term for a tumor or growth, fascinoma is medical slang for an unusually interesting medical case. These are the extraordinary stories medical professionals recall forever and pass from one colleague to another in hospital lounges and hallways. Every medical professional has at least one fascinoma to tell, and in this collection of bizarre-but-true stories, Meador retells some of the most memorable. In the vein of Berton Roueche, the famed medical writer for The New Yorker, the author of True Medical Detective Stories is back with an all-new book of complex cases, where medical professionals must often race against the clock to find clues in the most unusual places. Fascinomas is an entertaining and informative collection for physicians, nurses, medical students, and those who simply can't get enough of bizarre clinical cases. Written from the point of view of an experienced doctor, the stories are crafted in an engaging style that can be enjoyed by medical professionals and laypeople alike. More than just interesting tales, however, these real-life mysteries serve as great examples of the need for doctors to listen closely to and ask the right questions of their patients, even in the computer age, when so much information is at their fingertips. Sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction, and you never know where a crucial piece of evidence will be found by one of the detectives of the medical world.

Chronic Depression: Diagnosis and Treament for Dysthymic Disorder

Summary

Dysthymia, or chronic depression as it is commonly known, is one of the most misunderstood psychological disorders. Although it is the most common mental disorder, it is taken very casually because there is lack of knowledge about the subject. Normally, when this disorder is diagnosed, they think that the life of that person is over. This myth has to be broken because there is no logical explanation. There is nothing to be shattered about, and hopelessness will only make it worse. The best thing is that the problem has been diagnosed, and we will discuss why it is so challenging to get it diagnosed. This book takes you step by step through every aspect of chronic depression, from diagnosis, to treatment plans, to dealing with a loved one with this disorder. Starting from recognizing the symptoms, analyzing the causes, and choosing the right medication, you will enrich your knowledge and learn how to overcome chronic depression. Depression is the most common mental illness in the world. It affects one out of six people. When a disease is so widespread and common, there are bound to be myths. All this makes dysthymia a very highly misunderstood disorder. People try to handle and treat this problem on their own, because they come across dozens of people who suffer from it, and they hear all kinds of stories about what worked for them and what did not. They form a belief system according to the stories they heard, not realizing that no two people are alike - and no two diseases are alike. If two people suffering from dysthymia are not alike, how will they respond the same way to the same treatment? It is not possible, and this is one of the main reasons why depression goes unnoticed, uncured, and misunderstood. This is also why most of the cases become chronic.

A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year and Scientific American Book Club selection We have entered what is called the "biological century" and a new biopolitics has emerged to address the implications for America's collective value system, our well-being, and ultimately, our future. As Moreno explains the most contentious issues, he also offers an engaging history of the intersection between science and democracy in American life, a reasoned (and often surprising) analysis of how different political ideologies view scientific controversies, and a vision for how the new biopolitics can help shape the quality of our lives. Smell Detectives

Summary

What did 19th-century cities smell like? And how did odors matter in the formation of a modern environmental consciousness? Smell Detectives follows the 19th-century Americans who used their noses to make sense of the sanitary challenges caused by rapid urban and industrial growth. Melanie Kiechle examines nuisance complaints, medical writings, domestic advice, and myriad discussions of what constituted fresh air, and argues that 19th-century city dwellers, anxious about the air they breathed, attempted to create healthier cities by detecting and then mitigating the most menacing odors. Medical theories in the 19th century assumed that foul odors caused disease and that overcrowded cities, filled with new and stronger stinks, were synonymous with disease and danger. But the sources of offending odors proved difficult to pinpoint. The creation of city health boards introduced new conflicts between complaining citizens and the officials in charge of the air. Smell Detectives looks at the relationship between the construction of scientific expertise, on the one hand, and "common sense" - the olfactory experiences of common people - on the other. Although the rise of germ theory revolutionized medical knowledge and ultimately undid this form of sensory knowing, Smell Detectives recovers how city residents used their sense of smell and their health concerns about foul odors to understand, adjust to, and fight against urban environmental changes. The book is published by University of Washington Press.

Hospice Whispers: Stories of Life

Summary

When we fear death, we miss out on a lot of life. This book hopes to change that. While hospices care for persons in their final days, hospice is not about death. It's all about LIFE - real, nitty-gritty, poignant, funny, challenging, and bittersweet life in all its beauty and imperfection. Those who have experienced hospice usually speak in reverential tones of this service and find themselves fearing death less because they have seen all the incredible life that happens until the final moment. But those unfamiliar with hospice often misunderstand and fear it, and the end of life. Through first-hand accounts that range from humorous to heart-wrenchingly honest, Carla shares the stories that continue to teach her the lessons of what it means to be truly present with ourselves and each other in this perfectly imperfect experience called life.
