Every device

One place in every book, on every device

Your server keeps track of where you are in each book. The iPhone app and the web player both report to it, so whichever you pick up next is ready to continue.

How sync works

Every play, pause, jump and "mark as finished" is sent to your server as a small event with the time it happened. The server puts events from all your devices in order and keeps the most recent one.

  • Offline is fine. Events are stored on the device and sent when the connection returns, even days later. A late upload never drags you backwards past newer listening.
  • Rewinds count. If you deliberately go back to re-listen, that is respected; the furthest position does not automatically win.
  • No surprise jumps. If another device listened more recently, ListenTo.It tells you where it was and offers to jump there.
  • Finished stays finished. A phone that was offline cannot quietly un-finish a book you completed elsewhere. Play it again on purpose to listen again.
  • Wrong clocks are corrected. Each device's clock is compared with the server's, so a phone set to the wrong time still syncs correctly.

Progress is saved every 15 seconds while playing, and straight away when you pause, seek, change book or close the tab.

Browser notes

Browsers decide when a page may keep playing in the background. On a computer, playback continues in a background tab. On iPhone and iPad, Safari may pause audio when the screen locks or you switch apps; use the iPhone app for long listening with the screen off.
