How can we help?

Answers to common questions, and how to reach a person.

Frequently asked questions

What is ListenTo.It?

An audiobook app for the books you already own. You run ListenTo.It Server on a computer or NAS at home; it reads your audiobook folders and streams them to the iPhone app and to the web player at listento.it/app. Your place in each book is kept in sync between them.

Where are my audiobooks stored?

On your own hardware, in your own folders. ListenTo.It reads them where they are and never changes or deletes them. Nothing is uploaded to Hankinsoft. The only files it ever writes are new book folders added by a Library Source you set up.

Which audio formats work?

M4B and M4A (with embedded chapters), MP3, AAC, FLAC and Ogg, as single files or as a folder of parts. Formats a browser cannot play are converted on the fly by the server.

Can I listen when I am away from home?

Yes. Turn on Remote access on your server and it becomes reachable at its own secure address, with no port forwarding or router settings. The connection is encrypted end to end between your device and your server.

Does my place sync between my iPhone and my browser?

Yes. Pause on one device and the others pick up from the same spot. Listening offline on the iPhone is saved and sent when you are back online. If two devices disagree, ListenTo.It keeps the most recent listening and offers to jump to the other position rather than silently moving you.

Do I need a ListenTo.It account?

Not for listening at home: a server can use its own usernames and passwords. A free ListenTo.It account (email code, Apple or Google, no password) lets you sign in to your servers from the web player and the iPhone app, accept invitations, and keep ratings across servers.

Can I share my library with family?

Yes. Invite people by email, choose which libraries each person sees, and give children a kids or teens profile that only shows books rated for their age.

Is the iPhone app on the App Store?

Not yet. ListenTo.It is in early access; the iPhone app and the public server image will be announced here. Email us if you would like to try it.

Which browsers does the web player support?

Current Safari, Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android. On iPhone, browsers may pause audio in the background; the iPhone app is the better choice for long listening sessions with the screen off.

Is my data private?

Your books, listening history and progress stay on your server. The ListenTo.It account service stores only your name, email, sign-in methods and the list of servers you use. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking on this website.

Troubleshooting

The web player says it can't reach my server

The web player reaches your server through Remote access. Check that the server is running, that Administration › Server › Remote access is on, and that the server is version 0.4 or later. At home you can always open the server directly at its local address.

A book is missing or in the wrong place

Run a scan from Administration › Libraries. Scan errors are listed there with the file that caused them. Folder names like Author/Series/1. Title give the best grouping.

My position looks wrong on another device

Open the book again; it fetches the latest position from the server. If another device listened more recently, the player offers to jump there. How sync works.

Signing in

ListenTo.It accounts use a 6-digit code sent by email, Sign in with Apple or Google; there is no password to reset. Manage sign-in methods or delete your account at accounts.listento.it.
