Blue Cities

Summary

A romantic and a dreamer, Alexei Tolstoy never quite came to terms with the conflict between the glorious notion of a revolution to bring equality and justice to the world and its real-life execution, which took place in Russia in 1917. While he realized struggle was inevitable, the full horror of hunger, epidemics, and civil wars never truly sunk in until he found himself in the midst of them. Even worse was the life, which followed, filled with mundane minutiae, bureaucracy, corruption, and small-mindedness. To his great shock and disappointment, Tolstoy discovered equality and brotherhood were not always bestowed on the worthiest of men.  "Blue Cities" - the story of a young architect, whose inability to fit in with this strange, altered world eventually leads to a crime - is a literary record of Tolstoy's own thoughts and feelings during that harrowing and confusing time.

Scotched Nation

Summary

Five months after Scotland’s Independence Referendum, freelance journalist Willie Morton discovers he has a look-alike who works for pro-Union group, GB13, which aims to prevent Scotland leaving the Union. Morton wants to discover how far they are willing to go to frustrate democracy. What are the group’s connections with MI5 and is the Prime Minister involved?  It’s a game of high stakes and soon Morton is in the Palace of Westminster fleeing for his life up into the dusty dereliction of the roof space. He needs to confront the reclusive leader of GB13, whisky magnate Lord Craile, in his remote mansion on Mull and ask him one question - why?  But some questions are too incendiary, too dangerous.... The Union is sacrosanct, greater, it seems, than democracy itself and Morton seems to be a threat to it, their top target.
