Summary
Frederick Courteney Selous (1851-1917) was a British explorer, hunter, and conservationist. Arriving in South Africa when he was 19, he traveled from the Cape of Good Hope to Matabeleland, where he obtained permission from King Lobengula to hunt in the area now called Zimbabwe. Selous explored all the then-unfamiliar regions north of the Transvaal and south of the Congo Basin, recording ethnographic notes, shooting elephants, and collecting specimens of all kinds for museums and private collections. His real-life adventures inspired Sir H. Rider Haggard to create the fictional Allan Quatermain character. In this work, The Lion in South Africa, he describes his numerous encounters with wild lions and notes that as far back as the 1890s, lion numbers were shrinking from overhunting.

Summary
Oscar J. Harvey (1850-1922) was a renowned historian of Wilkes-Barre and Pennsylvania's Wyoming Valley, and held the positions of professor of mathematics and English at Wyoming Seminary. This is his account of the ravages of the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918 in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and the efforts made to combat and overcome it. Harvey gives a first-hand account of how the county struggled to deal with the plague while America was still engaged in World War One. Luzerne County responded immediately by adopting and enforcing drastic regulations to minimize contagion, setting up emergency hospital facilities and caring for the sick. Other challenges included finding the right staff, raising the remuneration of nurses, helping people to pay rent and taking care of orphans.

Ancient Origins of the Hebrew Roots Movement
Summary
Genesis 9 teaches that God gave moral law to all nations after the Flood. This is called Noahide Law. The apostle Paul taught that the Law of Moses, given at Mount Sinai, was added to Noahide Law to create a government structure for ancient Israel. Gentile nations were never under this Mosaic Covenant, and the Mosaic Covenant was set aside for the Jewish believers in Messiah at Jesus’ first coming. This is taught by Protestant, Roman Catholic, and Eastern Orthodox denominations, as well as most cults. Noahide Law is taught by the ancient church fathers, the Talmud, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and many other very ancient manuscripts. It was the doctrine of the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Essenes. In contrast, only the Hebrew Roots Movement believes that Noahide Law never existed and that every single person is still required to keep the Law of Moses: the Sabbath, kosher food laws, sacrifices, festivals, circumcision, etc. The Essenes (keepers of the Dead Sea Scrolls) excommunicated Hebrew Roots believers from their order, calling them heretics. Chapters in this book show Noahide Law from many sources: the writings of Moses, the rest of the Old Testament, the Gospels, and the epistles of Paul. Ancient sources like the book of Gad the Seer, Seder Olam, and others are also cited. Other chapters include Essene history, Noahide Law throughout history, and errors of various hyper-Hebrew Roots groups.

Summary
Purgatory (Latin "purgare", to make clean, to purify), in accordance with Catholic teaching, is a place or condition of temporal punishment for those who, departing this life in God's grace, are not entirely free from venial faults, or have not fully paid the satisfaction due to their transgressions. The whole penitential system of the Church testifies that the voluntary assumption of penitential works has always been part of true repentance. The councils of the Church remind the faithful that God does not always remit the whole punishment due to sin together with the guilt. God requires satisfaction, and will punish sin, and this doctrine involves as its necessary consequence a belief that the sinner failing to do penance in this life may be punished in another world, and so not be cast off eternally from God. In this book Fr. F. X. Schouppe explores the topic fully, referring to examples from the lives of the saints. An engaging classic that will help the reader better connect with his faith and the saints of the Church.
