Summary

At once the most lucrative, popular, and culturally oppositional musical force in the United States, hip-hop demands the kind of interpretation Imani Perry provides here: criticism engaged with this vibrant musical form on its own terms. A scholar and a fan, Perry considers the art, politics, and culture of hip-hop through an analysis of song lyrics, the words of the prophets of the hood. Recognizing prevailing characterizations of hip-hop as a transnational musical form, Perry advances a powerful argument that hip-hop is first and foremost black American music. Perry offers detailed readings of the lyrics of many hip-hop artists, including Ice Cube, Public Enemy, De La Soul, krs-One, OutKast, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Tupac Shakur, Lil' Kim, Biggie Smalls, Nas, Method Man, and Lauryn Hill. Perry shows that while its message may be disconcerting, rap often expresses brilliant insights about existence in a society mired in difficult racial and gender politics. Hip-hop provides a unique public space where the sacred and the profane impulses within African American culture unite. The audiobook contains language that some may find offensive. The book is published by Duke University Press.

Letters from Alcatraz

Summary

This special audiobook edition has been completely revised and updated with new content including author interviews with James "Whitey" Bulger and a new chapter on Mickey Cohen. Note: This audiobook contains graphic depictions of crime and prison violence. Alcatraz Island was home to some of the nation's most notorious criminals. Prisoners include Al Capone, Mickey Cohen, James "Whitey" Bulger, George "Machine Gun" Kelly, Robert Stroud - the Birdman of Alcatraz, Alvin Karpis, Henri Young, John and Clarence Anglin, and Roy Gardner. In Michael Esslinger's latest book, Letters from Alcatraz, the prisoners' stories come to life in their own words. With over 20 years of research, Esslinger, author of Alcatraz: Definitive History of the Penitentiary Years, has salvaged and compiled an extraordinary collection of inmates' letters, many never before published. Letters From Alcatraz includes a foreword by former Alcatraz Officer Larry Quilligan and over 125 letters and original correspondence from inmates both on and off the Rock. Letters From Alcatraz is an epic exploration of a secret cloak-and-dagger culture once hidden behind a mythical curtain. This book is much more than a mere exercise in myth busting. Paired with its contextual and intrinsic complexities, Letters From Alcatraz grants listeners privileged access to the formidable confinement conditions endured by these inmates along with their compelling portraits, and a thorough overview of the rich history of Alcatraz Island. The depth of feeling in its story, its setting, its cast, and sheer inimitability, these are their lives in prose and the stories of the forgotten....

Rudolph!

Summary

Rudolph! is a first-person account of the behind-the-scenes workings at the North Pole. Narrated by Bernard Rosewood, one of the elves of the North Pole Consortium, the story begins with Santa's realization that a young girl's request to get her dad back for Christmas isn't going to happen. Dad, you see, died in a car accident on a snowy road shortly after Thanksgiving. The NPC can do a lot, but they can't do miracles. Enter Rudolph, who has been hairless, cranky, and perpetually irradiated since the unfortunate malfunction of the Nuclear Clock in 1964. Rudolph is a survivor of the worst accident in the 400-plus years of NPC delivery, and if there is anyone on staff who believes in miracles more than jolly Saint Nick, it's Rudolph. Bernie, in a valiant effort to keep Christmas from going off the rails, is swept up into a Heaven-storming, Hell-crusading, Night of Bad Musical Numbers adventure to ensure that every child wakes up with presents on Christmas morning. Rudolph! is a funny and fast-paced reaction to 50 years of world-weary cynicism, technological advances, and post-millennial ennui since Rankin/Bass brought a stop motion reindeer into our living rooms.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Summary

Are you looking for a new method for accepting yourself? Then keep reading... It is normal for people to suffer. However, suffering is not just about physical or psychological pain. People also suffer from difficult self-assessments, uncomfortable feelings, and painful memories. Because we dread or worry about suffering, we do everything to avoid them. We want to minimize our suffering. Many of us give importance to feeling better. But a good life is a lot more than just the absence of suffering. We want to live a good life and we want to make the best of our short stay on this planet.   Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is focused on the problem of human suffering, but also beyond that. It is also about understanding human suffering as an important factor in realizing a good life. This new form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is focused on important questions such as “What is my real purpose in life?”   Many of us have all the things that some people are happy to have. But still, many of us are still miserable.   We still hear stories about billionaires on their prime committing suicide. There are celebrities who have already achieved wealth and fame but still sulk in the corner then drink alcohol or take drugs. It seems that our lives naturally come with suffering.   Physical pain has distinct psychological (mind) and physiological (body) components that manifest response and stimulus. The biological aspect of pain refers to the signal that is transmitted to our brain so we are aware that something is wrong.   The resolve to recover from chronic pain is distinct between the actual pain and suffering. It is also then focused on achieving comfort. While we cannot avoid pain, we can surely do something about our response to suffering, pretty much like how we can respond to anger.   If you want to know more about this, then simply buy now to get started!

Cover art for Borderline Personality Disorder

Borderline Personality Disorder

Summary

Would you like to know what BPD is? Then keep reading... BPD is also referred to as biosocial disorder among experts. This means that this disorder often starts with an inclination towards biological factors but is then intensified by the social environment of an individual. By temperament, the people with BPD often are intensely emotionally sensitive and very reactive. This is because they tend to feel things immediately and intensely as opposed to other people. Once their powerful and intense emotions have been triggered, it takes them a very long duration to get back to the emotional baseline. It is important to note that when these emotionally vulnerable people are confronted by their surroundings because they cannot validate their feelings, they develop BPD. In other words, they feel as though the people around them do not fully understand and acknowledge them as they are enough to help them handle their condition. In most cases, children who develop BPD have been shown to suffer abuse and neglect. Additionally, BPD also arises in children whose parents or guardians - well-meaning and loving - reduce their emotional feelings too much because they think that they are inappropriate or exaggerated.  What you will note about people with BPD is that they are often overwhelmed by feelings of intense anger, emptiness, self-loathing, shame, and abandonment among others. It is these kinds of feelings that causes their relationships to be quite unstable - hence causing them to be prone to interpreting things negatively. Do you want to learn more? Don’t wait anymore!
