The Rocks Don't Lie

Summary

How the mystery of the Bible's greatest story shaped geology: a MacArthur Fellow presents a surprising perspective on Noah's Flood. In Tibet, geologist David R. Montgomery heard a local story about a great flood that bore a striking similarity to Noah’s Flood. Intrigued, Montgomery began investigating theworld’s flood stories and - drawing from historic works by theologians, natural philosophers, and scientists - discovered the counterintuitive role Noah’s Flood played in the development of both geology and creationism. Steno, the grandfather of geology, even invoked the Flood in laying geology’s foundingprinciples based on his observations of northern Italian landscapes. Centuries later, the founders of modern creationism based their irrational view of a global flood on a perceptive critique of geology. With an explorer’s eye and a refreshing approach to both faith and science, Montgomery takes readers on a journey across landscapes and cultures. In the process we discover the illusive nature of truth, whether viewed through the lens of science or religion, andh ow it changed through history and continues changing, even today.

The Ageless Warrior

Summary

There was only one man who fought both Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. There was only one man who recorded 141 professional Knock-Outs. There was only one man who trained both a young Ali and heavyweight champion George Forman. There was only one Archie Moore. With a seven-decade boxing career, including 27 years as a prize fighter, Moore's vast career and exploits are finally chronicled in The Ageless Warrior. Author Mike Fitzgerald spent months with Moore before the boxer's death in an effort to capture the full life story of one of the 20th Century's most colorful and accomplished athletes. And what a story it was. Moore's opponent list reads like a "who's who" of boxing; he fought nine world champions and seven Hall-of-Famers.

Nathan Stone was a living legend in the West as a lawman, as an outlaw, as a gambler, as a wanderer through the wildest towns and terrain. Storm: Stories of Survival from Land and Sea

Summary

Selections by Sebastian Junger, Michael Groom, Gordon Chaplin, Jack London, Rick Bass, Jack LeMoyne, John Vaillant, John Muir, Whitney Balliett, Richard Byrd, and more.   Most people associate storms and other big weather with death - with the kind of force that makes each of us wonder about life, time, and the nature of our surroundings. Some people go out looking for bad weather or go to places where they're likely to encounter it. Others have the misfortune of being at the wrong place at the wrong time. Still, the stories in Storm have more to say than that. They tell us about what happens when people find that treacherous weather - or when it finds them - and we are reminded of the fragility of life, the capriciousness of nature's will, and how little we can do when both cross paths.   Editor Clint Willis has been a climber and an armchair mountaineer since he was 10 years old. His writing about technology, finance, and the outdoors has appeared in more than 100 publications, including Men's Journal, Outside, Rock & Ice, and The New York Times, and he is a contributing editor of Forbes ASAP and Worth magazines. He lives with his wife and two sons in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.   Terence Aselford narrated more than 150 audiobooks. His acting career has included regional theater roles ranging from Shakespeare to Neil Simon, on-camera work in NBC's Unsolved Mysteries, national television commercials, industrial videos, and voiceovers.   Nick Sampson, born in Bristol, England, has been an award-winning stage actor for more than 20 years. His theater experience ranges from British farce to Shakespeare.   Gary Telles has been narrating audiobooks for the past 10 years. A veteran stage actor, he has performed classical, contemporary, and original theater across the country in addition to appearing on television, radio, and CD-ROM.

Summary

The war of Honce drags on, and the roads and seas are littered with bodies. To everyone's stunned disbelief, Yeslnik the Fool has tipped the war's scales in his favor. The reign of the newly self-appointed King Yeslnik is already distinguished as the most bloody and merciless in Honce history. Trapped, Dame Gwydre and Father Artolivan concoct a desperate plot to join forces with Laird Ethelbert, the lesser of two vicious evils. But Ethelbert's paid assassins slew Jameston Sequin and nearly did the same to Bransen. Embittered by it all, Bransen seeks to extricate himself from the selfish goals of all of combatants. But in an odd twist of fate and crossed loyalties, Bransen sees in his old nemesis, Bannagran - the Bear of Honce and the man who slew his adoptive father - a darker image of his own heart. The Spec Ops Squad is supposed to be the best of the best, an elite group within the First Combined Regiment to take care of the dirtiest jobs. Sergeant Bart "Dragon" Drak isn’t too surprised to learn that these warriors don’t have a whole lot in common, and it’s obvious that it will take a lot of work to turn a bunch of commandos into a team. He didn’t sign up for this, but he’s got to see it through. In the midst of training, the Spec Ops Squad is called off to planet Dintsen to fight off an invasion from the Ilion Federation. Summary

In this classic work that continues to inspire its many fans, James Lovelock deftly explains his idea that life on Earth functions as a single organism. Written for the non-scientist, Gaia is a journey through time and space in search of evidence with which to support a new and radically different model of our planet. In contrast to conventional belief that living matter is passive in the face of threats to its existence, the book explores the hypothesis that the Earth's living matter - air, ocean, and land surfaces - forms a complex system that has the capacity to keep the Earth a fit place for life. Since Gaia was first published, many of Jim Lovelock's predictions have come true, and his theory has become a hotly argued topic in scientific circles. Here, in a new preface, Lovelock outlines the present state of the debate.
