An entertaining and enlightening exploration of why waste matters, this cultural history explores an often ignored subject matter and makes a compelling argument for a deeper understanding of human and animal waste. Approaching the subject from a variety of perspectives - evolutionary, ecological, and cultural - this examination shows how integral excrement is to biodiversity, agriculture, public health, food production and distribution, and global ecosystems. From primordial ooze, dung beetles, bug frass, cat scats, and flush toilets to global trade, pandemics, and energy, this is the awesome, troubled, uncensored story of feces.

“We come in peace” is what we told the anoza when human explorers first encountered them, but you would have to ask the anoza how that worked for them. They would tell you fast and quick that humans were cast into the outer darkness because of the evil in our hearts. It didn't take them long to figure that out when we left the blood of four innocents on their hands. In fact, we convinced them of it by trying to hide the evil that was done. Union Fleet flew an unmarked ship into space docks after the Corporate War, intending to secretly scrap it out, intending to get rid of the evidence. A time-space distorted Tesseract had killed its crew of humans, or so they thought. Or, was that just a rationalization to hide their shame? By the end of the Corporate War, Dallas Blake had lost everything: his wife, his daughter, his whole family. He was a man in need of far more than just a new beginning. What Dallas needed was a resurrection. Dallas went to the Union Fleet space docks to buy a war-surplus scout-class ship. Instead, he unknowingly buys the Tesseract. It does not take Dallas long to find out that its crew of artificials seems way more human than they should be and every bit as much in need of a resurrection as Dallas. But, Dallas Blake is outworlder to the nines and ready for whatever life throws at him, except maybe for Mariah. And, oh, by the way, did I mention that Mariah is techno? Mariah is but one of the mysteries of the ship once called Tesseract, now named the Five Moons. But no one was cutting Dallas any breaks. The ship's alien technology and artificial life forms are the mysteries that he must solve as the action-packed rescue of Emma from more than just the mercenaries that kidnapped her leads Dallas and the crew of the Five Moons into danger. At this point, however, I must warn you - Five Moons: Resurrection is not your father's science fiction. It is science fiction with the full flavor and robust action of a guns-blazing western.

Kryonean Chronicles: Pandemic is book two of the Kryonean Chronicles Series. The Black Pearl was more than just the most advanced quantum technology starship in Union Fleet. Captain Jack Falco has made it the Kryonean Empire’s worst nightmare. Captain Jack is Recon flesh and Recon bone. He is determined to the very core of him to save Layla’s people and end this terrible war. Princess Layla is equally determined to free her people from the Empire’s evil grip once and for all. One by one the Black Pearl and Union Fleet were taking the worlds of the kryonean Outworld Zone from the Empire’s evil grip. Layla’s Outworld Zone rebellion was going only too well, or so they thought until they rescued a kryonean mystic named Kyanne. In a horrible dream, Kyanne saw dragon-bats in the mind of the Imperial Admiral Jinashu. They came like a plague in the night. Only suffering and certain death followed in their wake. Imperial Admiral Jinashu had secretly set a plan in motion. His stealth scout ships had already been sent to Clandora to fill their holds with dragon-bats. Their mission was to unleash a plague of epic proportions onto the people of Astranar. Only the crew of the Black Pearl stood between them and certain death. The hunt was on to stop the Empire’s evil plan, but how would the Black Pearl ever find seven stealth scout ships in deep space? Even worse, how would Union Fleet ever get the twenty million people of Astranar vaccinated in time? This would be a pandemic if Doctor Terry failed. In the middle of all this, Kyanne has yet another vision. Time is of the essence as the forces of evil close in on the ancient Keeper of the Stones of the Law. Even so, Tarok must first decode Kyanne’s cryptic vision to find out where he was hidden. Imperial battlegroups surround them as the Recon Rangers accompany Kyanne to rescue the Keeper. And then there was Charlotte. She would be the future of her people, but only if Jack could save her from the invading Imperial forces.

Evil men conspired to have a starship destroyed to hide the evil they had done. They intended for its crew to disappear forever without a trace. They flew an unmarked ship into space docks and marked it for destruction. They thought that was the end of it, but in all of that chaos, the anoza found me. They chose me to save the Five Moons. I didn’t know any of that when I bought a ship that was never meant for sale. I didn’t know any of that when I first stepped foot upon its decks and changed everything.... But I know it now. And save the Five Moons? Damned straight I will. I am Dallas Blake, outworlder to the nines. By the end of the war, I had lost everything: my wife, my daughter, my whole family. The Mercenary Expeditionary Forces under Sarsen Tabbot leveled my home world, so there was no place left for me to return. I was left with no other choice but to start my whole life over. So I went to the Union Fleet space docks to buy a war surplus scout-class ship. Instead, I unknowingly bought the Tesseract. The ship was nothing I expected, but everything I needed. And you know that crew they thought was lost and gone forever? Well, think again. Now my crew and I fly from world to world, going wherever we are needed. Making a difference starts with us. If you ask the other intelligent species, they will tell you fast and quick that mankind was cast into the outer darkness because of the evil in our hearts. Just ask Captain Ravi Chandrakar, of the Union Cruiser Star Jammer. I am sure he would agree with that. Especially after that ever-conniving gangster-turned-politician, Al Simmonds, brought the whole region beyond the Seven Pillars back to the brink of war. Captain Chandrakar is still cleaning up that mess. Unfortunately, Al Simmonds is still out there on Daggan-7, conniving his next fiasco. And as for Sarsen Tabbot? She would tell you herself, "It ain’t over till the fat lady sings." The action never stops for the crew of the Five Moons.

Two beautiful Indian women are found dead with their noses cut off - an old Indian practice to punish infidelity - in this suspenseful second mystery by best-selling author Ed Gorman. The mutilation murders stun the quiet Iowa town of Cedar Rapids and call for the special skills of criminal psychologist Robert Payne, who uses clues from the crime scene to piece together a psychological portrait of the killer. The prime suspect is another Indian, David Rhodes, who is estranged from his wife, police detective Cindy Rhodes - and the woman with whom Payne is starting to fall in love. David Rhodes may have been morally outraged because the two murdered women were exploiting young girls in a prostitution ring. However, Payne discovers that the crime bears an eerie resemblance to a case involving a young Indian brave at the turn of the century. And when David is attacked by two well-established white men who clearly have something to hide, suspicion starts to shift. Payne uncovers another link to the town's frontier past - and finds that a prominent Cedar Rapids family guards a dark secret.

I am Captain Jack Falco. I am Recon flesh and Recon bone. In the fog of war, my Talon fighter was blown deep into Kryonean space. All that Jessica and I wanted to do was to work our way home as best we could. Jessica is my artificial copilot, but you would never know that looking at her. Slowly, we worked our way through uncharted enemy space, stopping only for fuel and to chart the area around us. By our own estimates, it would take us a year to get home. Then, by chance, in the middle of a lonely night, a faint message played out on Jessica’s screen. It was only by the hand of Fate that we found Layla, a Kryonean princess. Her people were my sworn enemy, but not Layla. She changed everything. As it turned out, it was not the Kryonean people that we both hated, it was the Kryonean Empire. The Kryonean Empire had swept across the outworlds to crush her people long ago under their oppressive thumb. They killed and abused who they pleased and taxed the outworlds to pay for it. When I joined Union Fleet, I swore an oath to protect and defend the people, but now, my new understanding was that "the people" included the Kryoneans, too. The way I saw it, I could help save her people from the Empire and, maybe, end this horrible war at the same time. All we had to do was to reignite her outworld revolution. I give Union Fleet a lot of credit. They actually agreed with me. Starting a Kryonean revolution should be a far better strategy to end this horrible war than the needless loss of men and ships in endless battles far from home. So, it was that they sent the Black Pearl and made me her captain. Black Pearl was like no other ship. She was Union Fleet’s first pocket battleship. With the Black Pearl, we actually stood a chance. One more time, though, the road to hell was paved with good intentions. By the hand of Fate, we discovered the empress’s plan to annihilate all of the outworld noble Kryonean families. Most of the noble princesses had already been rounded up. The empress and her henchmen were determined to commit this genocide while the rest of her people’s eyes were on the war. In the beginning, it was only Layla and I that stood against the empress and the might of the Kryonean Empire, but we gathered a storm around us. But the empress had a hurricane waiting for us - the likes of which were immense, and she was determined to wipe us all out to the last.
