The English philosopher and physician John Locke (1632 - 1704) is widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers. His work had a significant effect on the development of epistemology and political philosophy. The Second Treatise on Civil Government places sovereignty in the hands of the people, as Locke's fundamental argument is that people are equal and invested with natural rights in a state of nature in which they live free from outside rule. Locke's model of civil government consists of a civil state, built upon the natural rights of all people who welcome an executive power to protect their property and liberties. Locke maintains that the government exists for the people's benefit and can be replaced or overthrown if it ceases to function toward that end.

Grady Gallant was a journalist, editor, columnist, author, and editor who took part in the battles of Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. The first part of On Valor’s Side covers the grueling training that members of the First Marine Division underwent at Parris Island, while the second recounts the unit's travel to New Zealand, Guadalcanal, and the Solomon Islands. Besides bombing by Japanese aircraft, naval vessels, and artillery, as well as the continual attacks by tanks and infantry, the men suffered a starvation diet, disease, and sleep deprivation. None of that deterred them from performing the first successful American land assault in World War Two.

Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (1779) by the Scottish philosopher David Hume examines whether one can rationally come to any conclusions about God's nature. Three philosophers, Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes, debate this question in a series of dialogues. While all three agree that a god exists, they hold different views on God's nature. Demea, who argues for orthodoxy, insists that one cannot come to know the nature of God through reason. Philo, the skeptic, agrees with Demea that God is incomprehensible and offers convincing arguments for this position. Opposing them, Cleanthes the empirical theist argues that one can come to know about God by reasoning from the evidence in nature. Some of Hume’s themes and arguments are inspired by Cicero's De Natura Deorum.
