Very few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important, but also his best work. He spent 12 years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written by both sides: the French, for whom she raised an army to return the Dauphin to the throne; and the English, who fought the French in the Hundred Year's War and were ultimately Joan's executioners. This is a fascinating and remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country's greatest storytellers.

Tracy Brandt considers himself a lucky man. He has a wonderful family, good friends, and a dependable job. His love life, however, features a cheating ex who, though out of the house, is not yet out of the picture - with a past that just might get Tracy killed. Homicide inspector Cord Nolan wants nothing more than to show his best friend's little brother that he's a reliable man, but to do that he'll have to get Tracy to look past the player he used to be. It'll be a tough sell; reputation is everything, and Cord's is tarnished by his past indiscretions. Tracy and Cord have spent five years trying to suffocate their fiery attraction under a blanket of grudging antagonism. When Tracy finds himself with a target on his back, Cord finally has the chance to ride to the rescue and break through the dam of Tracy's reserve. Follow a link to an ad in a sponsored email and, no matter your age or stage of life, you will likely be directed to a product that marketers believe is right for you. More often than not, the ad will target those with a younger, trendier, hipper lifestyle, offering you products you never knew you needed or wanted. Companies market to a younger audience because they believe that’s where the money and the excitement are. But are they wrong? Perhaps very wrong? This is only one of the counterintuitive arguments that Darrell Bricker, CEO of Ipsos Public Affairs, a world leader in opinion polling, tackles in his groundbreaking new book, Next. Not since Boom, Bust & Echo has a Canadian expert in what Canadians will want and need distilled the growing trends based on real and extensive demographic data and dared to forecast what will come next in a major publication. Why is Harley-Davidson making smaller motorcycles and changing the way they sell their bikes? Should restaurateurs be focusing on vibrant, frenetic restaurants offering the latest food fashion or on open, quieter restaurants that focus on tasty standard fare? What’s the fastest-growing sector in the housing market? Where should companies plan on setting up shop? Why do we face a population crisis? Which provinces will become the haves and which the have-nots? Where will Canadians be emigrating from, and where will they live? Should we be building more hockey arenas or basketball courts, or even cricket pitches? Next is the first book in decades that offers an honest, often provocative prescription for where we will live, what we’ll be buying and who our leaders will be in the decades to come. Filled with stories of Canadians making critical decisions for their businesses and their personal lives, Next will appeal to a wide audience: anyone who is wondering where they should look for their next job or where they might plan on living in retirement - even how they will live in Canada’s ever-changing future.

The English philosopher and physician John Locke (1632 - 1704) is widely regarded as one of the most influential of Enlightenment thinkers. His work had a significant effect on the development of epistemology and political philosophy. The Second Treatise on Civil Government places sovereignty in the hands of the people, as Locke's fundamental argument is that people are equal and invested with natural rights in a state of nature in which they live free from outside rule. Locke's model of civil government consists of a civil state, built upon the natural rights of all people who welcome an executive power to protect their property and liberties. Locke maintains that the government exists for the people's benefit and can be replaced or overthrown if it ceases to function toward that end.

No one is born courageous, but everyone hopes courage will come. Here's how to stand strong. Like many other people of faith, you may be concerned about what the future holds for Christians in America. Every day we wake up in a nation and world that is increasingly hostile to our beliefs and values. Even the basic freedoms that define America - speech and religion - are under attack. The result is that many of us have become fearful, apathetic, and detached. The great need of the day is a sweeping revolution of courage in our lives, families, and houses of worship. A Call for Courage will spark that revolution in you. Michael Anthony understands how fear can paralyze us, and in this revolutionary new book he shows Christians how to stand up and speak out, mobilizing them to walk by faith, not fear. Drawing from Scripture and deep personal experience, he proves that anyone can learn the secret to putting fear in its place and becoming more courageous. A Call for Courage will help you stand up and speak out while others demand you sit down and shut up. You will learn how to develop the secret weapons God has given you for courage, handle haters, racists, and everyone in between, overcome attacks against your freedom of religion and speech, speak the truth with love when disagreements threaten to create division, and develop courageous humility as your new way of life. A Call for Courage is a handbook on how to live with courageous humility. No matter who you are or what you're facing, A Call for Courage will help you live with power, truth, and love in an age of intolerance and fear.

This work is an enlisted man’s firsthand account of what it was like to be a Marine in the Pacific during World War Two. T. Grady Gallant was a journalist, editor, columnist, author, and editor who took part in the battles of Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. The first part of On Valor’s Side covers the grueling training that members of the First Marine Division underwent at Parris Island, while the second recounts the unit's travel to New Zealand, Guadalcanal, and the Solomon Islands. Besides bombing by Japanese aircraft, naval vessels, and artillery, as well as the continual attacks by tanks and infantry, the men suffered a starvation diet, disease, and sleep deprivation. None of that deterred them from performing the first successful American land assault in World War Two.

In a series of 10 essays, spanning five centuries of history, beginning with the conquest of Mexico by Hermán Cortés and ending in 1992 San Francisco, Rodriguez explores the conflicts of race, religion, and cultural identity for Mexican-Americans across the landscape of his beloved California. The book's "argument" poses Mexico and the United States as moral rivals. Mexico wears the mask of tragedy, the United States wears the mask of comedy. By the end of the book, the reader recognizes an historical irony: the United States is becoming a culture of tragedy; Mexico, meanwhile, revels in youthful optimism. Mexico and the United States have changed roles.

Robert E. Lee, one of the most famous figures in American history, vanished after his dramatic surrender at Appomattox. In fact, he lived only another five years, during which time he did more than any other American to heal the wounds between North and South during the tempestuous postwar period. This is a moving and intimate account of those years filled with the warmth of family ties and enduring friendships set against the harsh realities of Reconstruction. Though Lee is best remembered for his military campaigns, this was his finest hour, the great forgotten chapter of an extraordinary life.

Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion (1779) by the Scottish philosopher David Hume examines whether one can rationally come to any conclusions about God's nature. Three philosophers, Demea, Philo, and Cleanthes, debate this question in a series of dialogues. While all three agree that a god exists, they hold different views on God's nature. Demea, who argues for orthodoxy, insists that one cannot come to know the nature of God through reason. Philo, the skeptic, agrees with Demea that God is incomprehensible and offers convincing arguments for this position. Opposing them, Cleanthes the empirical theist argues that one can come to know about God by reasoning from the evidence in nature. Some of Hume’s themes and arguments are inspired by Cicero's De Natura Deorum.
