Taoism

Summary

Taoism teaches the basic principles of living a long and healthy life. The Taoist principles help us understand the inseparable nature of the self and the nature of the cosmos, to participate in the natural flow of events. To gain knowledge about Taoism is the cultivation of a thought process of growth, self-exploration, and transformation and to link our inner self with the surrounding world. This is the way to engage ourselves in the realm of the Tao. What are the implications of Taoism in our daily lives? Can we apply the principles of Yang and Yin in our personal lives? If we wish to enter the realm of Tao, we need to have the willingness to accept the natural flow of activities and events. If we are aware to the ever-changing facets of nature, we will have the strength to create harmony. If we aren't aware, we will be affected by self-conflicts due to the circumstances. The first principle of Taoism is to develop an awareness of the natural things and understand these are interconnected as a part of the whole universe. The universal viewpoint states that everything is Tao. Good fortune is Tao; misfortune is also Tao. We must not pit one side against another but urge ourselves to determine a relationship between the opposites. There is a popular idiom: "there are two sides of a coin". Following this principle, you must appreciate both situations; it helps us embrace the situation. People become empathic as they understand the other side of the experience and imagine how they would react in a similar situation. Secondly, you must recognize and embrace the natural flow of change. People struggle often, as they cannot accept failure. If we recognize the cause of the failure, we will try to overcome the weaknesses and be able to solve problems at the early stages. The natural wisdom enables us to act appropriately.

Unemployable!

Summary

Roberts makes the case that this may be the greatest time in history to start a business. Using Roberts' strategies and principles in this book, learn how to become "unemployable" your entire life! Most of us are taught to get a good education and a good job. The idea that we should be content to have someone else dictate our daily commute, our income, schedules, and vacations is the accepted norm. To some, the idea of life in a cubicle eight hours a day is akin to torture. What does it really take for someone to jump off the employment treadmill and participate in the free enterprise system, unencumbered by traditionally accepted myths?

Arguments: How to Persuade Others to Your Way of Thinking

Summary

Arguing has a bit of a bad rap in modern society, being seen as divisive and a source of conflict. When most people hear the word, they think of heated rows where voices are raised, accusations and names are thrown back and forth like missiles, no satisfactory conclusion is reached, and the parties arguing end up angry, hurt, further apart, and more dogmatically entrenched in their positions than before. This reputation isn't deserved - arguing is just another aspect of communication, one that allows an exchange of ideas and for issues to be resolved in order for things to move forward. This book is going to teach you how to overcome the obstacles that stand between you and succeeding in convincing others to your way of thinking. It will take a look at what arguing actually is in order to gain a better understanding of how to do it well and efficiently, tackle the prickly issue of just how ethical it is to persuade someone, and look at the different ways in which we fail in our arguments, both in winning and occasionally in reaching a decent resolution without devolving into fighting. It will also take an extensive look at logic, particularly how it is applied to construct valid and compelling arguments, and finally closes with 10 tips that will help you win your arguments. The section on logic takes up over half the book - logic is the cornerstone of a convincing argument, after all. This isn't a stuffy book that will give you dense theory with no connection to real life, though: Each entry includes a personal and professional example that you are likely to come across in real life. Along with the positive uses of logic, some ways in which the techniques discussed can be used in a dishonest way that takes advantage of how the human brain works are also included. There is a brief discussion of the ethics of using these techniques, but ultimately the power is given to you, the listener.
