The Art Fair

Summary

A poignant and painfully funny novel about the New York art world by the acclaimed author of Although of Course You End up Becoming Yourself. For two first-class years, Joan Freeley had it all: the perfect family, the best art dealer in Manhattan, and the admiration of famous friends. Her adoring husband and two handsome sons attended her first gallery show in matching khakis and blue blazers. "An Interesting Talent Makes Its Debut," declared the New York Times. Then, as if her success were nothing more than a booking error, Joan's life got downgraded. A brutal divorce led to paintings too bitter to sell and a career stuck firmly in coach. Unable to see her suffer alone any longer, Joan's teenage son Richard leaves his father and older brother in Los Angeles and moves in to her one-bedroom apartment in SoHo. At the gallery openings where she used to be a star, Richard discovers just how much his mother's light has dimmed. She is an artist who is not showing - she might as well be invisible. To acknowledge her is to acknowledge the thin line between success and failure in a world as superficial as it is intoxicating. Richard immediately devotes himself to returning his mother to her former glory. Everything about him - the clothes he wears, the jokes he makes, the college he attends - is calculated to boost Joan's reputation. But as the years go by and the galleries keep sending back her slides, Richard has to ask: Who wants Joan Freeley's resurrection more - him or her? And when will his own life start?

Train's Trust

Summary

Steven Train is and has long been a thief and card sharp. He has gone by other names. He is sought out by another crook, John Ranier, with a proposal. Rainer saved a rich rancher, Patrick Comstock, from serious injury and was rewarded with an easy job, working for Comstock. Rainer tells Steve Train that Comstock is looking for an honest man who is also adept with firearms to undertake a very dangerous and responsible mission. Comstock has asked Ranier to help find such a man. Rainier wants Train to apply for the job with the understanding that they will split evenly the money Ranier is certain will be entrusted to Train. Train agrees to make the attempt and his interview with Comstock is successful. Many years ago Comstock convinced a friend named James Nair Cartwright to invest all of his money in oil stocks, only for the stocks to fail. Cartwright lost his investment and disappeared. Subsequently one of the oil stocks prospered and earned Cartwright $50,000. Comstock believes that Cartwright became the notorious outlaw now known as James Nair, who is a killer and almost impossible to reach. Train's job will be to find Nair and pay him the $50,000. Train is pleased to accept the assignment, but a detective shows up who has been long trying to capture Train for crimes committed by him under various aliases. Train now must persuade Comstock that he is not the man the detective is pursuing and that he should be trusted with the mission to find James Nair. Oddly, there is the impulse in Steve Train, that should Comstock trust him, despite the detective s accusations, he will double-cross Rainier and actually try to execute faithfully what Comstock wants of him.

Valley of Outlaws

Summary

When he first arrived in the town of Lister, no one knew anything about him except that he didn't speak... that he was probably a deaf mute. No one knew what to call him, so they called him Shannon. He bought supplies and ventured into a secluded valley and made enough money to take care of himself by selling pelts in town. Then one day Shannon came upon a horse that had been abused and was near death. He had a way with animals, and with patience and tender care, Shannon restored the horse to good health. When the outlaw Terry Shawn enters Shannon's valley with the sheriff and a posse on his trail, he grabs Shannon's horse. He later realizes that the horse he "borrowed" is Sky Pilot - called this because no one can ride him. He'd return him if he could, but the horse throws him every time he tries to mount him.

Leaders Open Doors

Summary

Leadership is the most overanalyzed, thoroughly dissected, and utterly confused topic in business. In Leaders Open Doors, author Bill Treasurer helps lighten the leadership load by distilling that leaders are simply creators of opportunity for others. Using personal stories and anecdotes, Treasurer presents the idea of open-door leadership - that is, the responsibility that leaders have for noticing, identifying, and creating opportunities for the benefit of people, organizations, and society. Each chapter includes useful and specific tips that can immediately be put into practice. Drawing on two decades of consulting experience, Treasurer introduces six unique opportunity doors: the proving-ground door the thought-shifting door the door to a second chancethe doors you open for othersthe door to personal transformationthe door to your open heartTreasurer shows that leadership isn’t a complex and abstract concept. It’s a set of practices and ideals passed from one person to another, across organizations and generations. It is a tradition that makes people’s lives better by opening doors of opportunities for them to thrive, achieve, and lead.
