Allegheny, Pennsylvania, now a part of the city of Pittsburgh, floods frequently and Mrs. Pittman has her boat tied to the stair banister, just inside the front door. It's 1904 and Jennie Brice, a stage actress, is missing from Mrs. Pittman's respectable boarding house. A blood-stained rope, bloody towel, floating slipper, a soaking wet fur coat, and a missing onyx clock are all clues. Most helpful is the installation of a periscope from Mr. Holcombe's floor through to ceiling of the room below. Where is Jennie Brice?

Collected and edited by Dorothy Scarborough Narrated by Susan Iannucci, Marty Krz, Jennifer Fournier, and John Burlinson. Dorothy Scarborough (1878-1935) was an academic and author who had a particular interest in the supernatural. The following collection, first published in 1921, features stories that have a strong comical or satirical focus. In the introduction, the anthologist notes: The modern spook is possessed not only of humor but of a caustic satire as well. His jest is likely to have more than one point to it, and he can haunt so insidiously, can make himself so at home in his host's study or bedroom that a man actually welcomes a chat with him - only to find out too late that his human foibles have been mercilessly flayed. 1. Introduction: "The Humorous Ghost" by Dorothy Scarborough 2. "The Ghost-Extinguisher" by Gelett Burgess 3. "The Transferred Ghost" by Frank R. Stockton 4. "The Mummy's Foot by Théophile Gautier 5. Gogol's phantasmagorical tale about a man whose nose decides to abscond and begin living a life of its own is one of the earliest and most celebrated examples of absurdist literature. Apart from its recondite humor, it is remarkable for Gogol's skill in characterization and his ability to paint a picture of contemporary life in Russia in a few verbal brushstrokes.
