Summary

This book, a true spiritual classic, consists of notes of several conversations had with, and letters written by, Nicholas Herman, of Lorraine, a humble man of little education. After having served as a soldier and a footman, Herman was admitted as a lay brother to the order of the barefooted Carmelites at Paris in 1666, where he took the name "Brother Lawrence." The conversations are supposed to have been recorded by Joseph de Beaufort, who later became vicar general to the Archbishop of Paris, and by whose recommendation the letters were first published in 1692, shortly after the death of Brother Lawrence. The translator is unknown. Contents: Introduction Preface Four Conversations Sixteen Letters

Summary

Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw  Presented by The Online Stage  In the Greek legend, a sculptor, Pygmalion, created a statue of a woman so beautiful that he fell in love with it. Later the goddess Aphrodite responded to his earnest prayers and brought the statue, named Galatea, to life. Shaw's Pygmalion is a fussy unmarried professor of phonetics, Henry Higgins, who claims that he could train an uneducated person off the street to speak so that he or she could pass as a member of the aristocracy. His Galatea is Eliza Doolittle, who sells flowers at Covent Garden and whose father is a dissipated but cunning vagrant. Higgins finds Eliza a surprisingly apt pupil, but with her new found skill in elocution comes a streak of independence, which threatens to upset the complacent harmony of his domestic life. Like many of Shaw's plays, Pygmalion includes a preface, as well as an afterword in which Shaw relates the further history of Eliza as she learns how to incorporate her training by Higgins into her new lifestyle.  Cast: Narrator: Grace Garrett  Eliza Dolittle: Arielle Lipshaw   Henry Higgins: Jeff Moon   Colonel Pickering: Denis Daly  Clara Eynsford-Hill: Amanda Friday  Mrs. Eynsford-Hill and Mrs Pearce: Sara Morsey   Bystander and Mrs. Higgins: Sarah Mitchell   Sarcastic Bystander and Alfred Dolittle: Alan Weyman   Parlour-Maid: Sarah Bacaller   Freddy Eynsford-Hill: Mark Crowle-Groves  Audio edited by Denis Daly

From Rome to Rationalism

Summary

It is said that there is no-one more zealous in a cause than an adult convert. A notable example of this was Joseph McCabe, whose conversion was not to a religion, but from religious faith to secularism. Ordained as a Franciscan priest in 1890, and later recognized by the Catholic Church as an able scholar and teacher, by 1897 McCabe had completely lost his faith and had left the priesthood. He became a very active secularist, delivering thousands of public lectures and publishing over two hundred books on a wide range of religious, historical and scientific topics. First published in 1896, From Rome to Rationalism describes McCabe's journey from faith to humanism. The content was later expanded into a full memoir, Twelve Years in a Monastery. Like his humanist peers, Robert Ingersoll and Robert Blatchford, McCabe endured persistent vilification for his anti-religious views. It has been noted that much of McCabe's literary output does consist of material critical of the Catholic Church. However, he claimed that he viewed all religions in the same light, and it appears that his focus on Catholicism was due primarily to his previous deep immersion in it, and also to the status of the church as the largest and most influential Christian denomination.

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, Annotated

Summary

The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam Translated by Edward FitzGerald Narrated by Denis Daly Omar Khayyam (1048 -1131) was a true polymath. A distinguished mathematician, astronomer, and philosopher, he is best known today for his Rubaiyat, a collection of rubai, or rhyming quatrains, of which he is estimated to have composed at least 500. Together with the work of Hafiz and Rumi, Khayyam's poetry represents the high point of classical Persian literature. Edward Fitzgerald was neither the first nor the most scholarly of the translators of the quatrains of Omar Khayyam, but due to his remarkable abilities as a poet, his versions have been accepted as classic literature in their own right. During his lifetime Fitzgerald published four editions of his translation - 1859, 1868, 1872, and 1879 - and a fifth edition was released posthumously in 1889. In this recording are presented readings of all five editions as well as biographical material about Fitzgerald and Omar Khayyam and a laudatory poem by Andrew Lang, which were published as part of the fourth edition. Spring Awakening

Summary

Spring Awakening By Frank Wedekind Translated by Francis J. Ziegler   Presented by The Online Stage   Spring Awakening (German: Frühlings Erwachen) was the first major play by Frank Wedekind. It was written in the early 1890s but, due to opposition from censorship authorities, was not presented on stage until 1906. The play explores two contentious themes: the development of adolescent sexuality and the repressive nature of the German education system.     As with most of Wedekind's plays, the action is presented in a series of snapshots. In Wedekind's view, life is a series of episodes linked by the action of deeply seated human impulses, rather than the more conventional view of it as a journey to a heightened level of personal understanding.     Cast  Wendla Bergman - Amanda Friday Frau Bergman - Elizabeth Klett Melchior Gabor - Andy Harrington Moritz Stiefel - Ted Wenskus Frau Gabor - Maureen Boutilier The Masked Man - Denis Daly Stage directions read by Marty Krz.   Also featuring the voices of Jeff Moon, P.J. Morgan, Arielle Lipshaw, Chris Marcellus, Grace Keller-Scotch, Leanne Yau, Tomas Peter, Ron Altman, Larry Wilson, Andrew Coleman, Alan Weyman, John Burlinson, and Joseph Tabler.   Audio edited by Denis Daly.

The Voice of the Silence

Summary

Helena Petrovna Blavatsky is best known as the cofounder of theosophy, which is essentially a selective conflation of Hindu and Buddhist ideas combined with Blavatsky's idiosyncratic system of cosmology. The Voice of the Silence, first published in 1889, is described by the author as "chosen fragments from the Book of the Golden Precepts, for the daily use of disciples". While the legitimacy of the source document has been questioned by scholars, the celebrated Buddhist authority D. T. Suzuki stated that the book demonstrated a deep understanding of advanced Buddhist principles. This book is a useful introduction to Blavatsky's system of philosophy and is much more accessible than her major works, The Secret Doctrine and Isis Unveiled.

A History of the Popes

Summary

A History of the Popes by Joseph McCabe. Narrated by Denis Daly. Joseph McCabe's study of papal history is unusual in that he takes a hostile view of the Roman Catholic Church in general, and of the papacy in particular. Raised as a Catholic, McCabe was ordained as a Franciscan priest in 1890, but by 1897 had abandoned both the priesthood and the Catholic faith and was in the process of establishing himself as an ardent secularist. He published over 200 books, many of which were critiques of the history and contemporary activities of the Catholic Church.  A History of the Popes is divided into four books: "The Age of Development (AD. 50-450)", "The Dark Age (AD. 450-1050)", "The Age of Power (AD. 1050-1550)", "The Age of Disintegration (AD. 1550-1939)". The history concludes during the reign of Pius XI, who today is hailed as a hero by conservative Catholics for his staunch opposition to modernism, but who has also been the target of strong criticism elsewhere for his accommodating stance toward Mussolini and Hitler. This book is the fascinating story of a unique autocracy which has survived the fall of many empires and which today still claims the allegiance of over one billion followers.

Death and the Devil

Summary

Death and the Devil: A Dance of Death in Three Scenes by Frank Wedekind. Translated by Samuel A. Eliot and Denis Daly. Cast: The Marquis Casti-Piani - John Burlinson; Fräulein Elfriede von Malchus - Amanda Friday; Herr König - Mark Crowle-Groves; Lisiska - Leanne Yau. Stage directions read by Denis Daly. Audio edited by Denis Daly.   This play forms part of a tetralogy which focuses on one of Wedekind's obsessive themes: the destructive interplay between primal sexual urges and social convention. Each play revolves around a powerful young female character, who has the power to control and captivate men, but who in turn is destroyed by the exercise of that power.  In this play, the dominant female is Fräulein Elfriede von Malchus, an idealistic crusader who visits a brothel operated by the cynical impresario Casti-Piani in order to rescue a young woman who has fallen into his clutches. In a perverse way, Wedekind's plays are morality tales, in which he gives a new twist to the biblical admonition; "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." In most cases, when characters finally do become aware of who they are and what they have done, the knowledge leads to their destruction. In Death and the Devil, Casti-Piani kills himself when he learns that prostitution can actually provide its victims with a path to moral glorification.

Practical Mental Influence

Summary

Practical Mental Influence - A Course of Lessons on Mental Vibrations, Psychic Influence, Personal Magnetism, Fascination, and Psychic Self-Protection. By William Walker Atkinson. Narrated by Denis Daly. Among the pioneers of the New Thought movement, William Walker Atkinson was one of the most active and most prolific. His many publications include texts on religion, the occult, concentration, memory, and healing. In the words of the author: "All students of Mental Influence have noticed the close resemblance that is manifested between the phenomena of electrical and magnetic energy on the one hand and the phenomena of mental energy on the other. So close is the analogy that one may take the proven facts of science relating to electrical and magnetic phenomena and confidently proceed with the certainty of finding a strikingly close correspondence in the field of mental phenomena. And the recognition of this fact is helping the workers in the mental field group together the varied phenomena that come under their notice, and to work out the theory and practice of Mental Influence."

Cover art for The Meditations

The Meditations

Summary

The Meditations, by Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. Translated by Jeremy Collier. Translation edited by Alice Zimmern. Narrated by Denis Daly. Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was the adopted son of the Emperor Antoninus Pius and ruled from 161 to 180. His Meditations or "discourses with himself" were written in Greek between 170 CE and 180 CE, mostly while he was on military campaigns. Jeremy Collier's translation, while lacking the accuracy of the more famous translation by George Long, has a particular verve and color, imparting a vigor that is often lacking in the original text. The translation was later revised and corrected by Alice Zimmern, who makes the following comment in the introduction: "The Stoic Emperor draws a noble moral from the transistoriness of our being. Not 'Let us eat and drink, for to-morrow we die,' is the teachings of the Meditations but rather, 'Let us use this life well, since we have no other.' The consolation for death must be sought in the consciousness of duty done. If we have lived well we should be content to die, no matter whether our years be many or few. Epicurus bade his followers depart from life as a guest from a banquet satisfied with his entertainment; the Stoics, in sterner language, bid us leave the stage as an actor who has performed his part."
