1862: Civil War Furies

Summary

Not everyone sensed it right away, but after McClellan was dethroned in the fall of 1862, the focus of the war had shifted ever so subtly. Before that, the war was about reconciliation and bringing the two sides back together - with or without slavery. After Antietam and the Emancipation Proclamation, there was no going back. The purpose of the war had changed. It was no longer about reuniting the two sides but about total victory, crushing the South, and eliminating slavery. Some said, and still say, that the Emancipation Proclamation was just so much useless paper because it didn’t free any slaves right away, but the people who said that missed the point. Lincoln used the Emancipation Proclamation to shift the focus of the war and eliminate objections to administration policy. No longer could the combatants shake hands and go back to things as they were. And the misguided fools who suggested we should give the South what she wanted and split the country into two separate nations were forever quieted. After 1862 such talk disappeared. Abraham Lincoln was reinventing America.

How John Wilkes Booth Assassinated Abraham Lincoln

Summary

Abraham Lincoln was strangely happy for the first time in years. The war was almost over. He could put the crisis behind him; when this term was over, he could return home to Springfield. Maybe he would go back to his legal practice with William Herndon, or perhaps he would buy a farm along the Sangamon River and become a gentleman farmer.  Everyone noticed the change.  For John Wilkes Booth, it was exactly the opposite.  His world was crumbling all around him. The Confederate government abandoned the city of Richmond, Virginia on April 3, 1865. Six days later General Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse.  To the 26-year-old Booth, everything appeared lost. The only hope left for the South was for someone to make a strike so bold, so daring, and so outrageous, it would turn the tide of defeat into victory.  What made it worse was the impromptu speech Lincoln gave at the White House on the night of April 11, 1865. It confirmed Booth’s greatest fear - Lincoln was a crazed “nigger” lover. Why else would he advocate giving former slaves the vote?  After listening to the President’s talk, Booth edged closer to David Herold, and snarled, “That means nigger citizenship. Now, by God, I’ll run him through.”  It was unacceptable. It ran against every belief Booth held. Someone had to stop Lincoln before he made a total mockery of the country.  The only questions left to decide were - when, and where?

1861: Civil War Beginnings

Summary

Think you know what started the Civil War?   In hindsight, we can say no one man or event served as a catalyst for the Civil War. It was not the John Brown Raid, no matter how many historians say it was the pivotal event. It was not the election of Abraham Lincoln, and the war was not about slavery - not in the beginning anyway.  The Civil War got its start 73 years earlier when the Founding Fathers set aside the hot potato that was slavery - so they could ratify the Constitution. The signers knew they were passing the issue on to a future generation. Their hope was their progeny could answer the questions they could not.  1861 will change everything.

Spine-Chilling Murders in Chicago

Summary

Ever wonder what evil lurks in your hometown? Spine-Chilling Murders in the Chicago takes you behind the scenes of some old-time killings in Chicago. Nineteen-year-old Amelia Olesen was outraged, strangled, and dragged across the prairie in Northwest Chicago. Rumors spread through the city that she was drugged and hauled away by a group of young men, or that a married neighbor stalked and murdered her. The primary suspect Tom Shehan had an airtight alibi, but police held him for over a month hoping for a break in the case. The Lady’s Murder Club consisted of six women incarcerated in the Cook County Jail. They all had one thing in common: They murdered their husband, lover, or some other close relative and were set free because no jury would convict a woman for committing a capital crime. The club members included Rene Morrow, Louise Vermilya, Sadie Blaha, Jane Quinn, Lena Musso, and Florence Bernstein. Detectives believed Augusta Dietz waited until her husband George Dietz fell asleep, then crept into his bedroom and bashed his head in with a hammer. Afterward, she planted a false trail of evidence, placing a note from the killer under the hammer where the police could not help but find it.  Chicago serial killer Henry Spencer took credit for killing 29 people (mostly women) during his 20-year run. He bragged to detectives he bagged 12 of them in as many months after being released from the Joliet Prison in 1912. The so-called “Man-Girl Murderer” was one of the most baffling cases to confront the Chicago Police Department in the 1920s. Mrs. Richard Tesmer told detectives Freddy Frances was the “girl bandit” she saw murder her husband, but when officers caught up with her, they discovered Freddy was a man in woman’s clothes. Add to that, he had a husband and a wife, and things got confusing.  Someone bludgeoned 20-year-old Theresa Hollander to death in the St. Nicholas Cemetery in Aurora, Illinois, in 1914. The police quickly focused their attention on a former suitor, Anthony Petras, but a jury failed to convict him after two trials. William Bartholin killed his mother and fiancé Minnie Mitchell, in what came to be known as the Calumet Avenue Death House. Several months and suspects later, Bartholin’s body turned up in a field in Riceville, Iowa. Detectives found a suicide note that cleared the other suspects, yet refused to release them pending the decision of the grand jury.  Six-year-old Paul Paszkowski disappeared from his home in 1903. A week later, his body was discovered buried in a gunny sack in a shallow grave. Suspicion immediately fell on 11-year-old Julius Wiltrax. After being interrogated for a week, he blamed his parents John and Elizabeth Wiltrax. Actress Margaret Leslie was found dead in room 420 at the Palace Hotel in Chicago on October 18, 1906. Suspicion quickly fell on a one-legged theatrical producer Howard Nicholas. He broke after a week of extreme “sweating” and gave police a 24-page confession implicating his partner Leonard Leopold. Nicholas later recanted his confession, saying Assistant Chief Herman Schuettler hypnotized him into making it.

Summary

Selling on eBay isn't a game. You need to have a plan. This audiobook walks you through what it takes to sell on eBay. It answers all of your questions and gives you ideas on how to get started and grow your eBay business. Includes a short section discussing the new seller standards that eBay began enforcing on August 20, 2014. Grab your copy now, and learn how it will affect you. Have you ever wondered how some sellers can grow strong, thriving businesses while others barely scrape by? Many times I've watched two sellers as they are first starting out on eBay. Both sellers offer the same products and prices, yet one business skyrockets to the top of the charts, selling thousands of items per month, while the other struggles to sell 10 or 15 items per month. They might even have the same basic looks to their listings. On the face of it, it doesn't make sense. Why does one eBay seller prosper while another falls behind? Is it a matter of luck? Does one eBay seller catch all of the breaks while another is stuck holding doo doo? Believe it or not, many struggling sellers believe this. They think it's all a matter of luck. But you and I know better. Don't we? Sellers who succeed on eBay play by different rules. They don't leave anything to chance. They know that success requires a plan. You don't just move from point A to point B. You need to make it happen. And that's what this book is all about. It gives you a strategy for selling on eBay. You will learn: How to write titles that draw buyers into your listings and help them find what you are selling How to take pictures that show buyers what they need to know to say, "This is the item I'm looking for!" The anatomy of a great listing. What you should say. How you should say it. What not to say.
