Born on March 25, 1930, in Hornell, New York, John A. Keel was keenly interested in magic and writing from an early age. After serving in the US Army during the Korean War on the staff of the American Forces Network in Frankfurt, Germany, he worked as a foreign radio correspondent in Paris, Berlin, Rome, and Egypt. Then, in 1954, he gave up his day job and set off on a life of travel and adventure, attempting to support himself with his writing. The travels and encounters he relates in this book, which ranged from Egypt to Singapore, cover about one year. Using articles he had written for the men’s magazines, Keel strung together a manuscript, which he originally entitled Pattern for Adventure, while living in Barcelona. The book appeared as Jadoo from a New York publisher in 1957, and he promoted it by performing a snake-charming act in a pet store window in New York City. Keel kept on writing for newspapers and magazines, as well as radio and television outlets, and ended up publishing a dozen books in his lifetime. He popularized the term “men in black” and coined the term “ultraterrestrials” to describe UFO occupants. Keel’s best known work is The Mothman Prophecies, an account of his investigation into sightings in West Virginia of a huge, winged creature called the "Mothman".

The macrocosm and the microcosm are, as it were, in the same groove, passing through the same stages, vibrating in the same key. I shall try to bring before you the Hindu theory that religions do not come from without, but from within. It is my belief that religious thought is in man’s very constitution, so much so that it is impossible for him to give, up religion until he can give up his mind and body, until he can give up thought and life. As long as a man thinks, this struggle must go on, and so long man must have some form of religion. Thus, we see various forms of religion in the world. It is a bewildering study; but it is not, as many of us think, a vain speculation. The Blissful Longing of Rumi
Summary
I first came upon the magnificent Divani Shamsi Tabriz at the now defunct Bodhi Tree bookstore on Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. I was 17 years old and I used to haunt that bookstore like a ghost who overstayed his welcome, primarily because they allowed its patrons to sit comfortably and read whatever was on their shelves for offer. I have a very fond memory of reading Rumi's deeply moving paens to his deceased mentor and friend, Shams of Tabriz. I eventually bought the paperback edition of the book and read it daily for years. Even today nearly five decades later my eyes moisten whenever I read anew the infinite longing that Rumi had for his beloved teacher, particularly when he could plaintively write, "Love's fingers tear up, root and stem, every house where sunbeams fall from love. When my heart saw love's sea, of a sudden it left me and leaped in, crying, find me. The face of Shamsi Din, Tabriz's glory, is the sun in whose track the cloud-like hearts are moving." Reynold A. Nicholson has done us all in the English speaking world a wonderful service by translating from the original Persian much of Rumi's writings. The following excerpted poems provide a glimpse into the heart and mind of the one world's greatest mystic poets. It is my hope that a new cadre of listeners will be moved and touched by Rumi's poems, which each have a universal import that transcends both religion and cultural boundaries.
