Summary

Red Room Press is extremely proud to present its fourth annual anthology featuring this year's hardcore corps of authors with the best extreme horror fiction of 2018 that breaks boundaries and trashes taboos. First up is Vigil by Chad Lutzke. Chad takes us into a neighborhood where a steady stream of decayed corpses are exhumed from a neighbor’s cellar. Extreme olfactory horror at its best. Deborah Sheldon went under the knife for the inspiration of Hair and Teeth, and the result is a tale of gynecological body horror likely to terrify women and make most men squeamish. With Rut Season Brain Hodge makes a return to Year’s-best stories in a tale as chilling as it is heart-wrenching, inspired by a thousand-mile drive littered with roadkill and some personal tragedies. Control by Jeff Parsons introduces us to a meth addict stalking potential victims in Central Park to get money for the next score.  Annie Neugebauer is back with Cilantro, a Neugebauerian yarn of culinary chaos sure to turn stomachs and cause nightmares.  Tim Waggoner likewise returns this year with Voices Like Barbwire, an exploratory dig into old wounds and painful memories. Rebecca Rowland’s Bent wins the Most Cringe-worthy Story honor with her twisted tale of extreme body horror. Her well-drawn characters seem to come off the page but God forbid they do. Their idea of a pretzel party is truly twisted. Scath Beorh takes Lovecraftian cosmic horror to its next level with Lord of the Mesa. Sean Patrick Hazlett’s story The Godhead Grimoire possesses dangerous religious overtones and a forbidden bloodthirsty book. Carnal Bodies by R.E. Hellinger is a shocking story of baroque horror and demonic necrophilia from Two Dead Queers Present: Guillozine. You’ll have to read this one to believe it. In Crossroads of Opportunity Ed Kurtz and doungjai gam take you on a-deal-with-the-devil-at-the-crossroads trip with a son driving his dead mother to an uncertain destination. Trouble is, his mother is a bit of a backseat driver and she just won’t shut up. Seras Nikita’s Dad’s Famous Preserves won’t do much for your appetite but it will show you a recipe for disaster when a jungle missionary’s foot infection blossoms into a stomach-churning nightmare. The Bearded Woman, brought all the way from Rome, Italy, by the inimitable Alessandro Manzetti. His dystopian future tale takes us for a ride in the Bearded Woman’s circus trailer as she and her dwarf husband bring their marriage to a bloody end. Sara Tantlinger’s The Devil’s Dreamland takes us inside the Murder Castle of the infamous H.H. Holmes with her brilliant narrative poem of macabre beauty. Frank Oreto’s All God’s Creatures Got Reasons reveals that there are real monsters walking among us, monsters with a savage appetite for young flesh, but they are so skilled at covering their tracks, we never even know they’re there. The Ugly by J.R. Park introduces us to a couple of sweet little kids who may have a good reason for torturing and eating cats. It’s a way to keep the ugly at bay. Or is it? Doug Ford’s I Have a Confession takes a coldblooded plunge into sex with a ghost. But what if it’s not a ghost? In When the Owls Call Lyman Graves takes us “stealth camping” in a Texas park after hours, where a strange and dangerous gathering is taking place. David Lynch might say, “The owls are not what they seem”. But are they? Jeremy Thompson is back this year with his nefarious pal the Hallowfiend in Bloodletting and Intrigue on All Hallows’ Eve’. With a stylistic nod to Ray Bradbury, Jeremy delivers on our promise that something twisted this way comes. Capping it all off, Alicia Hilton serves up Monkey See, Monkey Do as a tasty little nightcap (for those with hardcore tastes). Salud! Sleep well. If you can. - Randy Chandler and Cheryl Mullenax

Benjamin: An Alpha Hero Curvy Woman Romance

Summary

A sweet and steamy romance with an alpha police hero and younger curvy woman in lively San Francisco  A blue-blooded police officer by day, and fun seeker by night. Benjamin knows the girls like a man in uniform. But when he’s at the nightclub, Ben wants discretion. When a beautiful and curvy younger woman comes to the club to watch the band, Benjamin only has eyes for her.  Blog writer and introvert, Sarah agrees to take on a writing gig to review an up and coming band. Little does she know, it isn’t the band that makes an impact on her. She falls for the plain-clothes cop, and she falls hard.  Welcome to San Francisco, home to the Boys In Blue  Benjamin  I love this town, and I love its people. The trouble with loving and being in love — well that’s a different story.  I’m a police officer in the Golden City. I’m a person of flesh and blood and needs when I take off the uniform. I know sometimes it intimidates women. Sometimes they’re attracted, but never long enough to have a relationship. I wasn’t looking for love the night I went to the nightclub downtown to check out the new band. I didn’t intend anything out of the ordinary.  That’s when I saw her. She wasn’t the typical club girl. She wasn’t interested in finding anyone special. When we met, for the first time in my life, I think San Francisco just got a whole lot more interesting.  Sarah  This isn’t my scene. I’m not interested in the hottest new band.  But a girl has to eat and pay the rent. I’m a freelance writer and I only go to the club that night because the music blog paid for a story.  I must endure; I must carry on, because I know in my heart things will change. I’m an introvert, and a realist, and the band isn’t terrible. I need a few words — enough to pay the bills until I hear back about my manuscript.  I can’t get the feature story on the band. When I knew things were changing, I didn’t expect Benjamin. He’s a little older, he’s incredibly handsome. And for the first time in my life, I’m at a loss for words.   A steamy and sweet short-story insta-love romance with an older alpha police hero and younger curvy woman with explicit, sensual, promiscuous, uncensored scenes and a happily ever after ending. No cliffhangers. No cheating.   This is a stand alone book, but I recommend that you listen to them all, so jump into this series now to follow all of the Golden City Boys in Blue.

Poems About Dreams

Summary

Why do we dream? What is the meaning of our dreams? Why are some dreams so beautiful, passionate and yet others wistful and full of longing and regret? Why are some dreams so frightening and disturbing that they can haunt the bright day that we wake up in? Even in the technologically developed world we live in today, we still have no scientific and rational answer to these honest and heartfelt questions that every man and women asks themselves. Clearly there is no logical way to analyse dreams. And so it becomes the challenge of our literary dreamers, our poets, to artfully put down in words their own courageous attempts to interpret our visions of the night. “Thank God for dreams! I, desolate and lone, In the dark curtained night, did seem to be The centre where all golden sun-rays shone.” From "Dreams" by Ella Wheeler Wilcox All poetry in this anthology is in the public domain.

The Doubting Catholic

Summary

This a new edition of a classic critique by Joseph McCabe first published under the singular title, Twelve Years in a Monastery. From the new introduction: Joseph McCabe was a remarkably courageous thinker and writer, who was not shy from pointing out the numerous errors he found in the monastic lifestyle which he eventually felt distracted human beings away from an unvarnished and more honest approach to understanding the cosmos around us and how to live within in it. I realize that some Catholics may be offended by Mr. McCabe’s unyielding skepticism, but I think we are helped (not hindered) in our spiritual pilgrimages by allowing our doubts to be fully vocalized and not suppressed in fear that our God is so puny that she will strike vengeance on anyone who thinks logically and coherently and wisely. I often remark to my philosophy students at Mt. San Antonio College that we are puny creatures and there is nothing wrong with asking the hardest questions possible. Truth doesn’t evaporate because of our uncertainty, just as the sun doesn’t shine any less brightly because we occasionally spit at it. The problem with Roman Catholicism, as Joseph McCabe will illustrate throughout his text, is that it is too concerned with its own survival as a worldwide organization and less as school for open and unabashed inquiry. Yes, Joseph McCabe can rightly be regarded as an agnostic and a non-believer. But as the distinguished sociologist, Peter Berger, insightfully opined in 1979, we must all become heretics if we wish to scale beyond the walls of our own myopic indoctrinations.
