Cover art for Antigone by Sophocles

Antigone by Sophocles

Summary

Antigone by Sophocles. Translated by Sir George Young. Presented by the Online Stage. Sophocles (497 BC-406 BC), Aeschylus, and Euripides formed a trio of ancient Greek tragedians whose works represent the foundation of the Western tradition of classic drama. Of the more than 100 plays written by Sophocles, seven have survived to the present day. Perhaps the most famous of these are the three that are now known as the Theban plays: Oedipus the King, Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone. After the death of their father, Oedipus, Antigone and Ismene return to Thebes. The ruler is their unyielding uncle by marriage, Creon, who assumed command after the death of the sons of Oedipus, Eteocles, and Polynices in a fratricidal struggle to take control of the city. Creon has the body of one brother buried with full civic honors but forbids the burial of the body of the other, whom he regards as a traitor. Antigone's challenge to Creon's decree, which she considers unjust, results in the extinction of the family line of Oedipus. Cast: Libby Stephenson as Antigone, Amanda Friday as Ismene, Alan Weyman as Creon, Marty Kris as First Senator, Peter Tucker as Sentinel, Jennifer Fournier as Haemon, John Burlinson as Tiresias, K. G.Cross as Messenger in Attendance on Creon, Cate Barratt as Eurydice; Chorus performed by Brett Downey, Elizabeth Klett, Ed Humpal, and Cate Barratt; stage directions read by Grace Garrett.

The Picture of Dorian Gray

Summary

The Picture of Dorian Gray, first published in 1890, is still one of the most riveting novels ever written. The genius plot has everything to capture and hold the imagination, from lust, debauchery and doomed romance though blackmail, murder, and the disastrous effect of a morally depraved French novel. That’s not even counting the visits to the opium den, the addiction, the stalking or the string of deaths - accidental or self-inflicted.  The characters are likewise intriguing in their extreme expression of hedonism, vanity, callous indifference, and a host of other sins. But it is the relentless accumulation of evidence on Dorian’s picture which lends the narrative that brooding sense of Gothic horror which renders it so irresistible.  Finally, Oscar Wilde’s masterpiece conducts an intertextual conversation with Hamlet, The Tempest, Goethe’s Faust, and Against the Grain, a remarkable 1884 novel by Joris-Karl Huysmans.

Summary

Author of the New York Times and international best-seller Unfu*k Yourself Gary John Bishop presents a no-holds-barred guide to breaking through our cycles of self-sabotage to get what we want out of life. In Unfu*k Yourself, Gary John Bishop told us it was time to stop making excuses - to recognize and take responsibility for the negative self-talk holding us back. In Stop Doing That Sh*t, he builds on that message, teaching us how to stop self-sabotaging behavior.  Bishop explains how our destructive cycles come down to the way we’re wired. He then identifies different types of people and the ways we f--k ourselves over: We can’t save money. We land in the same type of toxic relationship. We’re stuck in a rut at work. Analyzing why we act the way we do, including what our common grenades are that blow up our lives, Bishop then shows how we can interrupt the cycle and stop self-sabotaging our lives.  Authored in the same in-your-face style as Unfu*k Yourself, Stop Doing That Sh*t will help us get in touch with our psychological machinery so we learn to interrupt negative thoughts and behavior before they start, allowing us to give our attention to something else, and start to find success in the areas we thought we never could.  We can take back our lives. We may have f--ked up in the past, but Stop Doing That Sh*t will show us how to break the patterns in order to live the lives we yearn to have.
