Cover art for Alan Turing

Alan Turing

Summary

Alan Turing had a radical and ingenious mind. He is considered one of the fathers of artificial intelligence, and his theories on this matter range from purely mechanical to almost spiritual. During World War II, his decryption of the Nazis’ Enigma codes proved vital for the Allied victory over the Axis powers. Turing’s fingerprints are everywhere, and yet his own country for quite some time failed to acknowledge it. It wasn’t until 2009 that the then prime minister of the United Kingdom, Gordon Brown, issued an official, posthumous apology to Alan Turing for “the appalling way he was treated.” To many, this was an admission that was far too long in coming.   Inside you will read about: The death of his first love Turing machines Breaking the Nazis’ enigma codes Conviction and chemical castration The poison apple And much more!  As the chronicling of this book demonstrates, Alan Turing’s life was by no means easy; there were hardships, trials, and tribulations that would shake him to his core. But despite the tragic way his life ended by way of a poison apple, the spark ignited by Alan Turing’s short life is still something exceedingly brilliant to behold.

Battle of Kursk - World War II

Summary

Battle of Kursk - World War II Long-time adversaries Germany and the Soviet Union put their hostilities to the test in World War II. Despite a temporary truce in the signing of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Non-aggression Pact in 1939, the Germans and the Soviets knew that the time was coming when they would face one another on the battlefield. Adolf Hitler, eager to accomplish his confident prediction that Russia would be easily defeated and its people subjected into slavery to serve as free labor for Germany, invaded the vast country in June 1941. But Operation Barbarossa was the beginning of the downfall of the Third Reich, as the dogged Russian refusal to succumb and the menace of the Russian winter demonstrated that the Soviet Union would not surrender as other European nations had done. You will learn about: Hitler’s View of the Untermensch The Communazi Pact and Operation Barbarossa The German Panzers The Soviet T-34 Preparing for Battle Showdown at Kursk And much more! By the end of the Battle of Kursk in August 1943, the largest tank battle in history, Germany had learned that the Soviet war machine was not easily dismissed. The Russians had learned that the Nazis were not invincible. In a fierce military encounter that included more than three million soldiers, 10.000 tanks, and 5.000 aircraft, the Battle of Kursk demonstrated the folly of underestimating the might of the Red Army.

Boston Massacre: A History from Beginning to End

Summary

Discover the remarkable history of the Boston Massacre... What makes a shooting a massacre? If a mob of hundreds is facing down eight soldiers, and five citizens are killed, is that the Boston Massacre or the Incident on King Street? As was the case with so many of the tumultuous events in America’s colonial history, the answer depended upon whether one regarded oneself as a British subject or a free American. Loyalists and patriots were already at odds over the idea of separation from Great Britain, and the Boston Massacre, which John Adams regarded as the day the foundation of American independence was laid, catapulted the concept into the forefront of Boston’s fate. Future president Adams, although a patriot by inclination, agreed to serve as the defense attorney for the British soldiers charged in the shooting. He believed that everyone was entitled to a fair trial. As he conjured the events of March 5, 1770, in the courtroom, he masterfully instructed the jury to rely on evidence rather than emotion.  Was an order to fire upon the crowd given? Were the soldiers acting in self-defense? Were the men who made up the crowd innocent victims or, as Adams attested, a mob? The Boston Massacre played an integral part in the incubation of American independence, but it also proved that while a new nation might spring forth in violence, it would not neglect its allegiance to the law. Discover a plethora of chapters, such as: From Allies to Enemies Taxation Without Representation The Shooting on March 5 How the Incident on King Street Became the Boston Massacre The Origin of Reasonable Doubt Aftermath of the Massacre And much more! Battle of Tarawa - World War II: A History from Beginning to End

Summary

Discover the remarkable history of the Battle of Tarawa... “It’s hell out there” was how one Marine described the assault on Tarawa, the US Navy’s first amphibious landing in World War II’s arduous Pacific campaign to bring the Empire of Japan to its knees.  In 76 hours of fighting, the Marines lost nearly as many men as had died during the six months of the Guadalcanal campaign. Military intelligence had failed to take into account the reefs around Betio, the target of the assault, or the low tides which prevented transport vehicles from bringing the Marines safely to shore. As Marines were forced to wade 700 yards from the stranded vehicles to the shore, many of them were shot by enemy fire or drowned from the weight of their packs.  When Americans back home saw the photographs of the bodies in the waters around Tarawa, they were horrified to realize that the route to Japan and victory would be strewn with the bodies of their young soldiers. Discover a plethora of chapters, such as: The Road to Tarawa Preparing Tarawa's Defenses The First Day of the Battle Eyewitness Account of the Betio Landing The Lessons and Legacy of Tarawa And much more! Battle of the Coral Sea

Summary

The Battle of the Coral Sea was a major naval conflict which took place a month before the Battle of Midway. Because Midway is regarded as the turning point in the war in the Pacific, Coral Sea is seldom given the respect it deserves. This view fails to take into account the strategic victory that the Allies enjoyed over their powerful, more experienced Japanese foe.  Inside you will learn about... The battle to save Australia Battle plans The invasion of Tulagi The fog of war The last day of the battle And much more! Pearl Harbor was only the beginning; in order to achieve its goal of becoming the dominant power in the Pacific, the Japanese knew that they had to finish the destruction of the American fleet. The supply lines that extended between the United States and Australia were an obstacle that the Imperial Japanese Navy intended to remove. But, unknown to the Japanese, the Americans had broken the Japanese code.  Upon learning that the Japanese planned to invade Port Moresby in New Guinea as an initial step in isolating Australia, Admiral Jack Fletcher and the American fleet, which included the carriers Yorktown and Lexington, raced to the Coral Sea. When the Japanese arrived, the Allies were waiting to engage in the battle that would, for the first time in World War II, force the Japanese to turn back without achieving their goals.

Battle of Bunker Hill (A History From Beginning to End)

Summary

Discover the remarkable history of the Battle of Bunker Hill.... Free bonus Inside! In every war, there are those battles that mark a turning point, after which everything is different. These are the battles that help determine how the war will proceed. The Battle of Bunker Hill was one of those battles in the American Revolutionary War. While it was a battle that the American rebels lost, it was significant because it showed that a rag-tag band of civilian soldiers could in fact stand up to the best trained and most experienced military in the world at that time. Despite losing the battle, the American colonists managed to repulse the British advances twice before finally running out of ammunition during the third assault. Additionally, they killed or injured over 1,000 British soldiers as compared to only suffering a little over 400 casualties among their own ranks. It came as a surprise to the British who had gone into the battle supremely confident that they would easily win. They didn’t count on the spirit of the colonial rebels who were, by that time, committed to the fight. The Battle of Bunker Hill changed the entire tone of the American Revolutionary War - from that point forward, the British knew they were in for a long, difficult fight, and the colonists had the confidence they needed to declare their independence from Great Britain and establish their own new country, the United States of America. Battle of Okinawa - World War II

The Battle of Okinawa was the deadliest campaign of the Pacific during World War II. But the Japanese, determined to defend their homeland and preserve their way of life, would fight to the death against the invaders. As the Army and Marines fought bloody battles to gain Okinawa inch by inch, the Navy was subjected to kamikaze attacks.  Inside you will hear about... Revenge for Pearl Harbor  Kamikaze: The Divine Wind Hell’s Own Cesspool Fight to the Last Man  Ernie Pyle  And much more! For almost three months, the Americans and the Japanese contested one another in a battle of endurance that highlighted the courage of the fighting men of both nations. Ultimately, the Japanese lacked the resources of the Americans, and the Americans claimed the island. But the Americans had learned a deadly lesson from the Battle of Okinawa: if the Japanese fought this hard to protect one island, how much harder would they fight to preserve Japan itself, the last vestige of their empire?  To save American lives, military leaders decided that they would utilize another, deadlier weapon to bring the Japanese to their knees. The atom bomb and the nuclear age rose from the ashes of the Japanese defeat at Okinawa.

Battle of the Atlantic

Summary

Battle of the Atlantic - World War II Imagine a battlefield of 3000 square miles, with an enemy that was often invisible when it struck. Imagine a convoy of ships carrying vital supplies from North America to Great Britain, at the mercy of the deadly marauders under the water, waiting to attack them. The Battle of the Atlantic, the longest campaign of World War II, took place upon the Atlantic Ocean as the Allies traveled back and forth from North America to Great Britain with desperately needed oil, provisions, weapons, and supplies for the embattled forces fighting against Nazi Germany. The U-boats, the terror of the undersea, made those convoy journeys particularly precarious, especially after Germany’s Admiral Karl Dönitz developed his dreaded wolf pack strategy. You will hear about: The Threat of the German U-Boats Battleships and the Bismarck The Lend-Lease Program The Downfall of the U-boats The Codebreakers who Cracked the Enigma Code And much more! From the start of the war in September 1939 until its end in 1945, the Battle of the Atlantic was fought to keep the Germans from blockading the Atlantic Ocean. The efforts of those valiant seafarers would eventually make D-Day possible, but there were times when even Winston Churchill feared that the prowess of the U-boats would imperil the Allies in their battle against the Nazi menace that had conquered Western Europe. The bravery of the Allied naval crews, and the brilliance of the Bletchley Park codebreakers, prevented the Atlantic Ocean from becoming yet another victim of Nazi dominance.

Irish Civil War

Summary

Discover the remarkable history of the Irish Civil War.... The Irish War of Independence, which ended in July 1921, led directly to the agreement of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, an agreement that provided Ireland with a measure of independence. The Irish Free State was created, and Ireland was granted a level of autonomy it had not enjoyed for more than 100 years.  However, the treaty contained a clause that was to divide Ireland, literally and politically. The six counties in the north that formed Ulster were allowed to opt out and to remain a part of the United Kingdom. The island of Ireland became two separate countries for the first time - the Irish Free State in the South and West and Northern Ireland in the North. This division caused bitterness among many Irish people who had fought for independence. Some even viewed the signing of the treaty and the creation of a separate Northern Ireland as a betrayal of all they had fought for. Others accepted that the treaty was not perfect but saw the creation of the Free State as an important first step on the road to complete independence for Ireland.  In late June 1922, growing animosity between Pro- and Anti-Treaty factions erupted into armed conflict in the center of Dublin. For the next 10 months, the Irish Free State was wracked by a bitter, bloody, and brutal civil war between those who sought to protect the new government and those who wished to destroy it. This is the story of the Irish Civil War, its origins, and its consequences.  Discover a plethora of topics such as  The War of Independence and the Anglo-Irish Treaty The attack on the Four Courts Civil war breaks out The deaths of Arthur Griffith and Michael Collins Executions and assassinations The ed of the civil war And much more! The Great Famine: A History from Beginning to End

Summary

The Great Famine The Great Famine which afflicted Ireland from 1845 to 1849 was one of the most catastrophic events in Europe during the 19th century. More than one-quarter of the population of Ireland died of starvation or associated disease, or were forced to emigrate. Ireland after the famine was a completely different country in many ways. The direct causes of the famine are simple to understand - a large part of the population of Ireland, mainly the poorest families, had become completely dependent on the potato as a source of food. In 1845, the blight appeared, a disease which affected the potato crop. Successive failures of the potato crop in Ireland led to more than one million people dying as a direct result. What is less easy to understand is why this famine was confined to Ireland and why the British government did not do more to help. The potato blight affected parts of Great Britain and other countries in Europe, but nowhere else did it lead to famine. For much of the famine, food continued to be exported from Ireland, and at its height, there was food stored in warehouses which could have been used to alleviate the suffering of the starving - that it was not represents at the very least a complete failure of understanding on the part of the British government. You will listen about: Farming in Ireland The Blight Arrives Full-blown Famine Mass Emigration Poor Laws, Revolt, and the Return of the Blight Aftermath and Legacy And much more! The Great Famine left a legacy of distrust and animosity between large segments of the population of Ireland and Great Britain, and this in part led to the movements which finally produced Irish independence. The famine also left a deep impression on the psyche of the people of Eire, and even today, Ireland remains at the forefront of international famine relief. This is the story of the Irish Potato Famine.
