Summary

This short but timely work gives the listener a sense of the urgency of African and world history at this moment in time.... Like many of the African-centered scholars who were Dr. Clarke's teachers and his sources of inspiration, he not only gives you accurate analysis and the descriptions of history, he provides prescription of what Africans have to do to bring into being a new day.

Summary

The Enchiridion or Manual of Epictetus is a short manual of Stoic ethical advice from the 2nd century Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus. The focus is on applying philosophy in daily life. The primary theme is that one should accept what happens. The Enchiridion, along with the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius and Seneca's Letters from a Stoic, is one of three key texts from which the modern world knows Stoicism.

Summary

Abernethy’s 1910 book The Jew a Negro has been analyzed by numerous modern authors studying race relations in earlier times in America. Arthur Talmage Abernethy, PH. D., (1872 –1956) was a professor, Methodist pastor in New York and North Carolina, and a Democratic candidate for congress in North Carolina. He was a gifted speaker and author a score of historical books, as well as being the youngest son of the founder of Rutherford College. He was elected to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and became the poet laureate of North Carolina. For example, the 2006 Jewish Roots in Southern Soil: A New History notes: “One southern writer, the North Carolina minister Arthur T. Abernethy, published an entire book arguing that "the Jew of to-day is essentially Negro in habits, physical peculiarities and tendencies". In rare cases...Jews were...grouped with blacks." The 2006 book The Price of Whiteness: Jews, Race, and American Identity states: “Published in 1910 by the North Carolina minister and professor Arthur T. Abernethy, The Jew a Negro argued that ancient Jews had thoroughly mixed with neighboring African peoples, leaving little significant difference between the Jewish and Negro types. As the Jews migrated to more temperate climes, their skin lightened and they became successful, but their essential racial similarity to blacks remained unaltered."

Knuckle Dragging Sales

Summary

According to the US Bureau of Labor statistics, 11 percent of Americans are in sales. Yet ask a room full of children, "Who wants to be a salesperson when you grow up?" and you'll get nothing but blank stares.  Why does no one aspire to be a salesperson, yet so many end up in sales? Money!  Sales is one of the few professions where you are the income driver. Want more freedom? Security? Impact on the world? Make more money, and you can have it all, right?  The legend of a "seven-figure commission club" has lured many into sales. Most realize quickly it's not as easy as it sounds!  As John Crowley started on his quest to join this elusive group, he voraciously consumed sales books, podcasts, and more. But when he implemented their suggested hacks, tips, and tricks, his commission decreased. Why?  With every new sales technique, he moved further away from the basics. The "experts" of the sales world muddied the waters and made us believe there's a magic bullet to make selling easy. Magic bullets don't exist in sales.  Through trial and error and a lot of knuckle dragging, John figured out what worked and what didn't. None of it was "easy"or "magic", but it was simple. You persist and win - or you quit and fail. You hunt and gather - or you starve and die. Even a caveman could understand that.  Welcome to the de-evolution revolution of sales!

Car Business 101

Summary

Automotive retail is at crossroads, either it gets better or becomes extinct. Consumers are dissatisfied with the sales process in brick and mortar dealerships and that is the driving force behind the rise of Carvana and other industry disrupters. However, it is not too late to fix the way car dealerships operate and improve their reputation. Car Business 101 highlights irrational and counterproductive behavior that car dealers engage in on a daily basis. If you own or work in a car dealership it will be easy to recognize insanity that goes on in Sales, F&I, BDC, HR, and the Parts & Service departments. This audiobook offers a fresh perspective and plenty of practical solutions that should be implemented as soon as possible. It is informative and entertaining at the same time. It is a must listen for dealer principals, dealership employees, and vendors that service car dealers.

The Ground You Stand Upon: Life of a Skytrooper in Vietnam

Summary

Sent into the deadly Central Highlands of Vietnam, a true story of my dad and the skytroopers of Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry from 1966 to 1967. My father was living on his family’s farm when he was drafted in 1965 and assigned to Alpha Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Calvary. The 5/7th Cavalry was formed as a brand-new battalion in order to fill out the 1st Air Cavalry Division’s 3rd Brigade. The young men of the battalion were drafted together in 1965 as the build-up of regular Army forces in Vietnam had just begun. Together, these impossibly young men would be trained in airmobile infantry tactics and become what were known as “skytroopers”. In the depths of the jungle, they would learn what “search and destroy” meant and face the reality of this new war.   The story features many of the letters and photos my dad sent home from the war zone. The photos can be viewed on the PDF available with the audiobook. His dispatches were sent from some of the most remote valleys and outposts in Vietnam, written under the most austere of conditions, often scribbled in haste before another mission, or by flashlight, under a poncho in the rain. They would travel over 8,000 miles across the ocean, to be placed in a mailbox that stood across from a farmhouse, along a rural county road in Wisconsin. Many former skytroopers of Alpha Company were interviewed for this story, and their personal accounts recall much of the humor and friendship they shared, along with the sadness and tragedy that would accompany a year spent in the jungles of Vietnam. The story also draws upon the 5/7th Cavalry’s daily situation reports for each day of the battalion’s first year in Vietnam.  This is their story, told in great detail from their time spent training together at Fort Carson - through their historic journey across the ocean aboard the USNS Gaffey, where they would encounter a massive typhoon - through their many battles fought together in Vietnam - and eventually, their final patrol.                               PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio

Effective Car Dealer

Summary

This is my fourth book on the auto industry, and I have written it because this business is complicated, sophisticated, and ever-changing. Automotive retail is changing slowly, and one of the main reasons for that are the franchise laws. I want to urge you to operate as though franchise laws don’t exist to protect you. Carvana is not going anywhere, and neither is Amazon. At some point they will join forces. Also, OEMs such as Tesla, Rivian, and many more are going to go directly to the consumer, bypassing the dealer network altogether. At the end of the day, awesome customer service, whether in sales, service, or parts, will keep your customers coming back for more. Poor service and a cumbersome sales experience will drive them elsewhere - Carvana, CarMax, Tesla, Jiffy Lube, Firestone, Good Year, Valvoline, NAPA Parts, Pep Boys, etc. COVID-19 is already having a profound effect on consumer behavior and the way in which we buy and service cars. I predict that there will be two types of dealers after this pandemic abates - the first will change their business operations, adopting frictionless digital and showroom retail; the second will hope that things go back to normal and that nothing needs to change. Unfortunately, the second type of dealer will be out of business. It is ultimately your choice whether to accept change. Consumers will continue to purchase cars. The only question is: Will they will be buying from you?

The Art and Science of Running a Car Dealership

Summary

This book is the pocket guide I wish I had when I first became a general manager of a Mitsubishi dealership in New York. Honestly, I am not the brightest star in the sky and made every mistake anyone could’ve possibly made. Unfortunately, I see dealer principals/general managers/general sales managers making the same mistakes today. The only difference is the time and consequences of these mistakes.  I got my first GM gig in 2004. That was in the beginning days of the internet, before millennials joined the workforce, and way before any viable disrupters entered the market space. It was a lot easier to get away with mistakes then. I don’t think you could get away with making the same mistakes now. The stakes are too high. Automotive retail profit margins are tiny. According to the National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA), the automotive net profit margin as of March 31, 2019 was merely 1.38 percent. As a result, every misstep makes it harder to stay in business.  The car business desperately needs better leadership skills, understanding of social media, inventory management, fixed operations, and so much more. There is no educational barrier to the entry into car business, and there are only a handful of universities offering a major in car dealership general management, such as Liberty and Keiser. On top of that, only a tiny percentage of dealer principals and general managers attend the National Automobile Dealer Association University. That means that a vast majority of general managers receive training on the job, even if we took business-related classes in college.  The auto business is a different animal. General information will only carry you so far. That is exactly why general managers make the same mistakes year after year. My goal is to break this vicious cycle and provide as much information as possible to ensure that automotive retail survives the disruptions we are witnessing today. We need to be ready for the next generation of car buyers, people who are more computer-savvy and not afraid to search for better deals.  According to surveys, 80 percent of millennials plan to buy a vehicle in the next five years. In fact, millennials worldwide will buy about 40 percent of all vehicles in the next decade. At the same time, they spend an average of 17 hours online before going to a dealership.  Are you ready for them?
