Crossroads

Summary

An inspiring story of hope and resiliency. On April 6, 2018, 16 people died and 13 others were injured after a bus taking the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team to a playoff game collided with a transport truck in a rural intersection. The tragedy moved millions of people to leave hockey sticks by their front door to show sympathy and support for the Broncos. People from more than 80 countries pledged millions of dollars to families whose relatives had been directly involved in the accident. Crossroads is the story of Kaleb Dahlgren, a young man who survived the bus crash and faced life after the tragedy with resiliency and positivity. In this chronicle of his time with the Broncos and the loving community of Humboldt, Saskatchewan, Dahlgren takes a hard look at his experience of unprecedented loss, but also revels in the overwhelming response and outpouring of love from across Canada and around the world. But this book also goes much deeper, revealing the adversity Dahlgren faced long before his time in Humboldt and his inspiring journey since the accident. From a childhood spent learning to live with type 1 diabetes to his remarkable recovery from severe brain trauma that astounded medical professionals, Dahlgren documents a life of perseverance, gratitude, and hope in the wake of enormous obstacles and life-altering tragedy.

25 Lies Twentysomethings Need to Stop Believing

Summary

Your 20s are your defining decade, the time in which you are setting the course for the rest of your life. You don't want to look back later and realize you ended up somewhere you never intended to go in the first place. How do you block out all the lies, half-truths, and "supposed-to's" constantly assaulting you from articles, social media posts, and well-meaning friends and family? How do you find something real, something true, something infused with purpose and meaning?  Funny, vulnerable, and to the point, this book exposes the false beliefs that can derail your current happiness and future impact, like having big dreams is naïve; success just happens; everyone else is experiencing the success you were supposed to; when you fail you're a failure; and many more. This story-driven book shows you that you're not alone in your insecurities and second-guessing, then shows you how to replace the lies with the truth - that you can live a life of purpose, earn a good paycheck, leave a legacy, and have fun doing it.

Old Geezer Romancing in Cyberspace

Summary

Bill McDonald, an award-winning journalist, had no intention of writing about the internet dating he began at age 69.

What could occur on the dates of an old geezer like me, he reasoned, that would pique ones interest or keep a reader spellbound?

It didn't take long for him to realize he'd failed miserably as a soothsayer.

One first-time date met him, quite intentionally, while she luxuriated in a bath of soapsuds and bubbles. A luncheon date startled him with a fact not mentioned in her profile: she was the great-granddaughter of Mark Twain, having discovered the kinship only two years earlier. A sex therapist insisted on smudging him before he could enter her home. This ancient ritual had her wafting herbal smoke around his body to eliminate negative vibes.

These and other noteworthy occurrences led the author to write the fascinating pause resister, Old Geezer Romancing in Cyberspace.

Summary

"In the beginning, there was no such thing as heaven or hell. All that there was then, was earth.... There are raconteurs and mischief-mongers in our ranks and I have no doubt they shall pervert the truth with their self-serving versions. The events of history - this history of our land - shall thus inevitably have many versions, doubtless. But, I was there with General Ramm, I fought by his side..." —Sanjaay, official chronicler of General Ramm Around 12,000 BC, Hindustan as we know it today (or Hind) comprised five kingdoms of man, sandwiched between Parbat, the kingdom of the Gods in the north, and Lunka, the kingdom of the demons in the south. Powers of Darkness

Summary

Powers of Darkness is an incredible literary discovery. In 1900, Icelandic publisher and writer Valdimar Asmundsson set out to translate Bram Stoker's world-famous 1897 novel Dracula.  Called Makt Myrkranna (literally, 'Powers of Darkness'), this Icelandic edition included an original preface written by Stoker himself. Makt Myrkranna was published in Iceland in 1901 but remained undiscovered outside of the country until 1986, when Dracula scholarship was astonished by the discovery of Stoker's preface to the book.  However, no one looked beyond the preface and deeper into Asmundsson's story. In 2014, literary researcher Hans de Roos dove into the full text of Makt Myrkranna, only to discover that Asmundsson hadn't merely translated Dracula but had penned an entirely new version of the story, with all new characters and a totally reworked plot. The resulting narrative is one that is shorter, punchier, more erotic, and perhaps even more suspenseful than Stoker's Dracula.  Incredibly, Makt Myrkranna has never been translated or even read outside of Iceland until now. Powers of Darkness presents the first ever translation into English of Stoker and Asmundsson's Makt Myrkranna. With a foreword by Dacre Stoker, Bram Stoker's great-grandnephew and best-selling author, and an afterword by Dracula scholar John Edgar Browning, Powers of Darkness will amaze and entertain legions of fans of Gothic literature, horror, and vampire fiction. PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio.
