Black and White Photography

Summary

Black and white photography is considered by some to be more difficult than color photography, simply because color ceases to be an element in the finished product. However, it is still an element to be considered while shooting, because color affects what greys, whites, and blacks you get as a result. Black and white can make your photos much simpler, pared down to the basics. This can make photographs appear more serious or scary, or even take away considerations of decade or century. Photographs also need different development in post, as well as different considerations for grain. Here's a preview of what you'll learn: Deciding whether or not to shoot in black and white: there is no right or wrong answer; they can be for aesthetic consideration or to make an image less distracting. Tonal differences and contrast: I explain why color is still important, because the color content of a scene will affect your tonal ranges. Being technically competent: This tip explains the usage of different ISOs and how black and white grain differs from color grain. Pay attention to the light: Light is very important in any photo, but here, it can help change the mood of a black and white photo very quickly. Texture: Texture becomes even more important in black and white photos than it does in color, because you have one less element to work with. Composition: Refer to this tip for a short refresher on the elements of composition, and how you can use them to make your photos stronger. Headshots: This tip explains the pros and cons of shooting headshots in black and white, as well as things to consider when doing so. Post Processing: Learn how to control your color channels and contrast in reference to black and white photos. Creating almost black and white photos: Learn how to purposefully create such images to delight viewers at their subtlety.

Photography Composition: 12 Composition Rules for Your Photos to Shine

Summary

In Photography Composition, you will find all you need to know to learn the basics of composition. It will teach you the proper terms and ways to apply rules that you might already know instinctively yet not quite understand why they work the way they do. Here's a preview of what you'll learn: Happy accidents: This tip teaches you how to pay attention to the following rules in order to replicate happy accidents and to be able to more purposefully craft your photographs. Rule of thirds: It teaches you where to place points of interest in your photos. Leading lines: This tip shows you how lines can help move a viewer's eye around the composition. Move around: Moving around gives you access to different perspectives, which might actually bring better compositions than what you first assumed. Horizon lines: Different from leading lines, horizon lines break up the frame into two parts. Shape: You will learn how to utilize shape that already exists in the frame and how to create it where you want it using points of interest. Foreground and background: This tip mentions usage of midground and why you should take advantage of the entire depth of your frame, not just the immediate foreground. Weight: You can give weight to your photos by placing a "heavier" subject to one side or the top or bottom of a frame. Juxtaposition: This basically means that you will place two opposite things side by side. Balance: Balance - ironically, you may think - is achieved in odd numbers. Tension: You can create tension by examining the relationships of your subjects and composing them accordingly. Framing: Framing can dramatically alter a viewer's perception of a scene. Color: Color can often be used as a crutch by new photographers.

Takedown

Summary

On September 11, 2001, as Central Intelligence Agency analyst Philip Mudd rushed out of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the White House, he could not anticipate how far the terror unleashed that day would change the world of intelligence and his life as a CIA officer. For the previous 15 years, his role had been to interpret raw intelligence and report his findings to national security decision makers. But within weeks of the 9/11 attacks, he would be on a military aircraft, flying over the Hindu Kush mountains, en route to Afghanistan as part of the U.S. government's effort to support the fledgling government there after U.S. forces had toppled the Taliban. Later, Mudd would be appointed deputy director of the CIA's rapidly expanding Counterterrorist Center and then senior intelligence adviser at the FBI. A first-person account of Mudd's role in two organizations that changed dramatically after 9/11, Takedown sheds light on the inner workings of the intelligence community during the global counterterror campaign. Here, Mudd tells how the Al Qaeda threat looked to CIA and FBI professionals as the focus shifted from a core Al Qaeda leadership to the rise of Al Qaeda-affiliated groups and homegrown violent extremism from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. As a participant in and a witness to key strategic initiatives - including the hunt for Osama bin Laden and efforts to displace the Taliban - Mudd offers an insider's perspective on the relationships between the White House, the State Department, and national security agencies before and after the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan. Through telling vignettes, Mudd reveals how intelligence analysts understood and evaluated potential dangers and communicated them to political leaders. Takedown is a gripping narrative of tracking terrorism during what may be the most exhilarating but trying times the American intelligence community has ever experienced.

Summary

Author's note: "There is no doubt in my mind that we will get in life what we desire in the ratio of the earnestness of our purpose in going after it." - J. C. PENNEY To express the thought in another way: We get out of life exactly what we put into it - nothing more, nothing less. So it is with the message within this audiobook. You will get out of it in the same ratio which you accept the theme and apply the principles. Therefore, if you wish to develop and get what you want in life, do not loan or give this book away, but make it your constant companion and listen to it as frequently as possible. The more often it is replayed, the more workable the principles become and the clearer the road ahead.
