The world is changing in ways most of us find incomprehensible. Terrorism spills out of the Middle East into Europe. Russia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, China, and Japan vie to see who can be most aggressive. Financial breakdown in Asia and Europe guts growth, challenging hard-won political stability. Yet, for the Americans, these changes are fantastic. Alone among the world's powers, only the United States is geographically wealthy, demographically robust, and energy secure. That last piece - American energy security - is rapidly emerging as the most critical piece of the global picture. The American shale revolution does more than sever the largest of the remaining ties that bind America's fate to the wider world. It re-industrializes the United States, accelerates the global order's breakdown, and triggers a series of wide ranging military conflicts that will shape the next two decades. The common theme? Just as the global economy tips into chaos, just as global energy becomes dangerous, just as the world really needs the Americans to be engaged, the United States will be...absent. In 2014's The Accidental Superpower, geopolitical strategist Peter Zeihan made the case that geographic, demographic, and energy trends were unravelling the global system. Zeihan takes the story a step further in The Absent Superpower, mapping out the threats and opportunities as the world descends into disorder.

Exercises are simple, often involving feeling-imagery and meditative awareness, which have a profound and sometimes instant effect. Areas of exploration include: Beginner’s body-being Three aspects of body awareness Five principles for an effortlessly effective body Opening a door - five steps to transformation Fourteen points on structural alignment Where similar guides teach audiences what to do, this book teaches audiences how to be.

Shane K. Bernard's Teche examines this legendary waterway of the American deep south. Bernard delves into the bayou's geologic formation as a vestige of the Mississippi and Red Rivers, its prehistoric Native American occupation, and its colonial settlement by French, Spanish, and eventually, Anglo-American pioneers. He surveys the coming of indigo, cotton, and sugar; steam-powered sugar mills, and riverboats; and the brutal institution of slavery. He also examines the impact of the Civil War on the Teche, depicting the running battles up and down the bayou and the sporadic gunboat duels, when ironclads clashed in the narrow confines of the dark, sluggish river. Describing the misery of the postbellum era, Bernard reveals how epic floods, yellow fever, racial violence, and widespread poverty disrupted the lives of those who resided under the sprawling, moss-draped live oaks lining the Teche's banks. Further, he chronicles the slow decline of the bayou, as the coming of the railroad, automobiles, and highways reduced its value as a means of travel. Finally, he considers modern efforts to redesign the Teche using dams, locks, levees, and other water-control measures. He examines the recent push to clean and revitalize the bayou after years of desecration by litter, pollutants, and invasive species. The second part of the audiobook describes Bernard's own canoe journey down the Teche's 125-mile course. This modern personal account from the field reveals the current state of the bayou and the remarkable people who still live along its banks. The audiobook is published by University Press of Mississippi. "An important audiobook about a uniquely interesting place." (Ken Wells, author of Meely LaBauve: A Novel) "The audiobook is an amazing and much-needed treatise on a fascinating region." (Tim Gautreaux, author of Signals: New and Selected Stories).

Personal, reflective, and gently investigative, these early essays have a raw, fresh quality which predates the more formal theory and practice of Peter Ralston's two popular books, The Book of Not Knowing and Pursuing Consciousness. Many of the questions we might struggle with in life - identity in relation to others, authenticity in the face of belief systems, the draw we have to pursue ineffective self-serving urges, and our tendency to conceptualize rather than experience things - are described here in simple, almost conversational language. Attempting to grasp what authentic knowledge is, Ralston's queries become a quest for how humans can develop a deeper sense of themselves as participants in the world.

Whack! The plates go flying at your head. He kicked you in the shin again, or punched you in the face, or choked you, or slammed your head against the wall, or tried to drive you off the road again. How much more can you take? Are you going to stand there and let him hit you again? Sometimes a narcissist hits you hard enough to kill you.... You might not care enough about yourself to stop yourself from being killed.... But what about maimed? What about psychotic and locked in a mental ward? What about schizophrenic till you don’t know which voices are yours? What about neurotic while you pick at your skin or cut yourself till you bleed? What then? Crash! He broke your favorite laptop...or tablet...or phone...or he smashed your car into a guard rail. Look how he supposedly "lost control", but funny how all his own belongings are still intact. Funny how he stands up in court with his grin on his face, completely calm, cool, and collected. Where was that monster he pretended to be just yesterday? Funny how he behaves at his friend’s house and at work when his boss gets on his case. Imagine that; he does have some control after all. He can help what he does; he simply chooses to terrorize you (and your children if you fell into the trap of doing that for him along with 2/3 of the household chores). Get real. You ain’t laughing; but he is. Let’s talk about monsters, shall we? Which monster is hiding in your bed? Which monster is hiding in your head? Curious about which mental disorder the monster in your life has? Maybe he is on our list. And did you know his condition is genetic? We’ll cover that, too. We’ll take you for a spin on the power and control wheel and the healthy relationship wheel to see how you fare and compare. We’ll tell you the constellation of the six dimensions of wellness, and how you can get to wellness one baby step at a time. You’ll have some more help by the time we are done. Then I will let you off to your newfound freedom.

A new edition of a classic work that originated the "embodied cognition" movement and was one of the first to link science and Buddhist practices. This classic work, first published in 1991, was one of the first to propose the "embodied cognition" approach in cognitive science. It pioneered the connections between phenomenology and science and between Buddhist practices and science - claims that have since become highly influential. Through this cross-fertilization of disparate fields of study, The Embodied Mind introduced a new form of cognitive science called "enaction", in which both the environment and first-person experience are aspects of embodiment. However, enactive embodiment is not the grasping of an independent, outside world by a brain, a mind, or a self; rather, it is the bringing forth of an interdependent world in and through embodied action. Although enacted cognition lacks an absolute foundation, the audiobook shows how that does not lead to either experiential or philosophical nihilism. Above all, the audiobook's arguments were powered by the conviction that the sciences of mind must encompass lived human experience and the possibilities for transformation inherent in human experience.

Peter Ralston's exceptionally lucid trilogy on the nature of human consciousness culminates here in The Genius of Being, a book of deep contemplations on the unseen elements that create our world. The first volume, The Book of Not Knowing, garnered much praise as a comprehensive exploration of the depths of self and consciousness. The second volume, Pursuing Consciousness, clarifies the difference between enlightenment and self-transformation, and then pairs these two goals in a strikingly effective way. This third book is both shorter and more complex, taking us straight to the heart of the origins of our experience. In a progression of illuminating assertions, Ralston shows us how human consciousness carves out distinctions from whatever is absolutely true. This dynamic not only generates both self and reality from nothing, it imbues them with the quality of objective truth. From the time we first distinguish between self and not-self as infants, we begin making a sequence of existential assumptions that result in the illusion that a self is some ethereal "object" within. This universally accepted assumption persists despite the failure of exhaustive investigations to locate this inner self. This book is not for the faint of heart or the casual seeker, but contemplating the assertions here empowers you to personally and experientially grasp what is rarely even glimpsed: a profound consciousness of the genesis of human experience.
