Order Without Design

Summary

An argument that operational urban planning can be improved by the application of the tools of urban economics to the design of regulations and infrastructure. Urban planning is a craft learned through practice. Planners make rapid decisions that have an immediate impact on the ground - the width of streets, the minimum size of land parcels, the heights of buildings. The language they use to describe their objectives is qualitative - “sustainable,” “livable,” “resilient” - often with no link to measurable outcomes. Urban economics, on the other hand, is a quantitative science, based on theories, models, and empirical evidence largely developed in academic settings. In this audiobook, the eminent urban planner Alain Bertaud argues that applying the theories of urban economics to the practice of urban planning would greatly improve both the productivity of cities and the welfare of urban citizens. Bertaud explains that markets provide the indispensable mechanism for cities' development. He cites the experience of cities without markets for land or labor in pre-reform China and Russia; this “urban planners' dream” created inefficiencies and waste. Drawing on five decades of urban planning experience in 40 cities around the world, Bertaud links cities' productivity to the size of their labor markets; argues that the design of infrastructure and markets can complement each other; examines the spatial distribution of land prices and densities; stresses the importance of mobility and affordability; and critiques the land use regulations in a number of cities that aim at redesigning existing cities instead of just trying to alleviate clear negative externalities. Bertaud concludes by describing the new role that joint teams of urban planners and economists could play to improve the way cities are managed. How to Differentiate Instruction in Academically Diverse Classrooms, Third Edition

Summary

We differentiate instruction to honor the reality of the students we teach. They are energetic and outgoing. They are quiet and curious. They are confident and self-doubting. They are interested in a thousand things and deeply immersed in a particular topic. They are academically advanced and “kids in the middle” and struggling due to cognitive, emotional, economic, or sociological challenges. More of them than ever speak a different language at home. They learn at different rates and in different ways. And they all come together in our academically diverse classrooms. Written as a practical guide for teachers, this audio edition of Carol Ann Tomlinson’s groundbreaking work covers the fundamentals of differentiation and provides additional guidelines and new strategies for how to go about it. You’ll learn:  What differentiation is and why it’s essential How to set up the flexible and supportive learning environment that promotes success How to manage a differentiated classroom How to plan lessons differentiated by readiness, interest, and learning profile How to differentiate content, process, and products How to prepare students, parents, and yourself for the challenge of differentiation First published in 1995 as How to Differentiate Instruction in Mixed-Ability Classrooms, this new edition reflects evolving best practices in education, the experiences of practitioners throughout the United States and around the world, and Tomlinson’s continuing thinking about how to help each and every student access challenging, high-quality curriculum; engage in meaning-rich learning experiences; and feel at home in a school environment that “fits.” PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.

The Differentiated Classroom

Summary

Although much has changed in schools in recent years, the power of differentiated instruction remains the same, and the need for it has only increased. Today’s classroom is more diverse, more inclusive, and more plugged into technology than ever before. And it’s led by teachers under enormous pressure to help decidedly unstandardized students meet an expanding set of rigorous, standardized learning targets.  In this audiobook of the second edition of her best-selling classic work, Carol Ann Tomlinson offers these teachers a powerful and practical way to meet a challenge that is both very modern and completely timeless: how to divide their time, resources, and efforts to effectively instruct so many students of various backgrounds, readiness, skill levels, and interests. With a perspective informed by advances in research and deepened by more than 15 years of implementation feedback in all types of schools, Tomlinson explains the theoretical basis of differentiated instruction, explores the variables of curriculum and learning environment, shares dozens of instructional strategies, and then goes inside elementary and secondary classrooms in nearly all subject areas to illustrate how real teachers are applying differentiation principles and strategies to respond to the needs of all learners. This audiobook’s insightful guidance on what to differentiate, how to differentiate, and why to lay the groundwork for bringing differentiated instruction into your own classroom or refining the work you already do will help each of your wonderfully unique learners move toward greater knowledge, more advanced skills, and expanded understanding.  Today, more than ever, The Differentiated Classroom is a must-have staple for every teacher’s collection and every school’s professional development library. The Trauma-Sensitive Classroom: Building Resilience with Compassionate Teaching

Summary

From the author of Mindfulness for Teachers, a guide to supporting trauma-exposed students. Fully half the students in US schools have experienced trauma, violence, or chronic stress. In the face of this epidemic, it falls increasingly to teachers to provide the adult support these students need to function in school. But most educators have received little training to prepare them for this role.  In this audio edition of her new book, Tish Jennings, an internationally recognized leader in the field of social and emotional learning, shares research and experiential knowledge about the practices that support students' healing, build their resilience, and foster compassion in the classroom. In part I, Jennings describes the effects of trauma on body and mind, and how to recognize them in students' behavior. In part II, she introduces the trauma-sensitive practices she has implemented in her work with schools. And in part III, she connects the dots between mindfulness, compassion, and resilience. Each chapter contains easy-to-use, practical activities to hone the skills needed to create a compassionate learning environment. The Trauma-Sensitive Classroom is expertly narrated by Camille Mazant. All activities referenced in the audiobook are included in the supplementary PDF. The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts

Summary

An introduction to the spiritual source of the beliefs and practices that have so profoundly shaped African American religious traditions. Most of the Africans who were enslaved and brought to the Americas were from the Yoruba nation of West Africa, an ancient and vast civilization. In the diaspora caused by the slave trade, the guiding concepts of the Yoruba spiritual tradition took root in Haiti, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, and the United States. In this accessible audio introduction, Baba Ifa Karade provides an overview of the Yoruba tradition and its influence in the West. He describes the 16 Orisha, or spirit gods, and shows us how to work with divination, use the energy centers of the body to internalize the teachings of Yoruba, and create a sacred place of worship. The audiobook also includes prayers, dances, songs, offerings, and sacrifices to honor the Orisha. The Handbook of Yoruba Religious Concepts is skillfully narrated by Camille Mazant, with guidance from the author.

Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma

Summary

Traumatic experiences leave a “living legacy” of effects that often persist for years and decades after the events are over. Historically, it has always been assumed that retelling the story of what happened would resolve these effects. However, survivors report a different experience: Telling and re-telling the story of what happened to them often reactivates their trauma responses, overwhelming them rather than resolving the trauma. To transform traumatic experiences, survivors need to understand their symptoms and reactions as normal responses to abnormal events. They need ways to work with the symptoms that intrude on their daily activities, preventing a life beyond trauma. Dr. Janina Fisher, international expert on trauma, has spent over 40 years working with survivors, helping them to navigate the healing journey. In Transforming the Living Legacy of Trauma, she shows how the legacy of symptoms helped them survive and offers: Step-by-step strategies that can be used on their own or in collaboration with a therapist Simple diagrams that make sense of the confusing feelings and physical reactions survivors experience Worksheets to practice the skills that bring relief and ultimately healing PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying PDF will be available in your Audible Library along with the audio.
