Summary

EMDR is the fastest and most efficient evidence-based therapy available today. It has resulted in 80-90 percent recovery from PTSD in five to twelve hours and was found to be much faster than cognitive behavior therapy. EMDR is the perfect solution for people who are tired of going through long years of therapy for distress or psychological barriers, those who are considering therapy but are daunted by the long-term commitment, those who have found out that awareness, willpower, and determination are not enough for change, and those who want a deep psychological change in an extremely short period of time. As psychiatrist and professor Bessel A. van der Kolk said, “The speed at which change occurs during EMDR contradicts the traditional notion of time as essential for psychological healing.” The EMDR Revolution educates readers about a revolutionary psychotherapy called EMDR, which stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. The main parts of the book include a series of case studies and each case study includes lessons that readers can apply to themselves for better understanding of oneself and human nature.

Summary

Change is difficult but essential - Esther Derby offers seven guidelines for change by attraction, an approach that draws people into the process so that instead of resisting change, they embrace it. Even if you don’t have change management in your job description, your job involves change. Change is a given as modern organizations respond to market and technology advances, make improvements, and evolve practices to meet new challenges. This is not a simple process on any level. Often, there is no indisputable right answer, and responding requires trial and error, learning, and unlearning. Whatever you choose to do, it will interact with existing policies and structures in unpredictable ways. And there is, quite simply, a natural human resistance to being told to change. Rather than creating more rigorous preconceived plans or imposing change by decree, Agile software developer turned organizational change expert Esther Derby offers change by attraction, an approach that is adaptive and responsive and engages people in learning, evolving, and owning the new way. She presents a set of seven heuristics - guides to problem-solving - that empower people to achieve outcomes within broad constraints using their personal ingenuity and creativity. When you work by attraction, you give space and support for people to feel the loss that comes with change and help them see what is valuable about the future you propose. Resistance fades because people feel there is nothing to push against - only something they want to move toward. Derby’s approach clears the fog to provide a new way forward that honors people and creates safety for change.

How to Be a Positive Leader: Small Actions, Big Impact

Summary

Positive leaders are able to dramatically expand their people’s - and their own - capacity for excellence. And they accomplish this without enormous expenditures or huge heroic gestures.  Here, leading scholars including Adam Grant, author of the best-selling Give and Take, positive organizational scholarship movement cofounders Kim Cameron and Robert Quinn, and 13 others describe how this is being done at companies like Wells Fargo, Ford, Kelly Services, Burt’s Bees, Connecticut’s Griffin Hospital, Michigan-based Zingerman’s Community of Businesses, and many others.  The authors show that, like the butterfly in Brazil whose flapping wings create a typhoon in Texas, you can create profound positive change in your organization through simple actions and attitude shifts.

Femininity in Flight

Summary

"In her new chic outfit, she looks like anything but a stewardess working. But work she does. Hard, too. And you hardly know it." So read the text of a 1969 newspaper advertisement for Delta Airlines featuring a picture of a brightly smiling blond stewardess striding confidently down the aisle of an airplane cabin to deliver a meal. From the moment the first stewardesses took flight in 1930, flight attendants became glamorous icons of femininity. For decades, airlines hired only young, attractive, unmarried white women. They marketed passenger service aloft as an essentially feminine exercise in exuding charm, looking fabulous, and providing comfort. The actual work that flight attendants did - ensuring passenger safety, assuaging fears, serving food and drinks, all while conforming to airlines' strict rules about appearance - was supposed to appear effortless; the better that stewardesses performed by airline standards, the more hidden were their skills and labor. Yet today, flight attendants are acknowledged safety experts; they have their own unions. Gone are the no-marriage rules, the mandates to retire by thirty-two. In Femininity in Flight, Kathleen M. Barry tells the history of flight attendants, tracing the evolution of their glamorized image as ideal women and their activism as trade unionists and feminists. Barry argues that largely because their glamour obscured their labor, flight attendants unionized in the late 1940s and 1950s to demand recognition and respect as workers and self-styled professionals. In the 1960s and 1970s, flight attendants were one of the first groups to take advantage of new laws prohibiting sex discrimination. Their challenges to airlines' restrictive employment policies and exploitive marketing practices (involving skimpy uniforms and provocative slogans such as "fly me") made them high-profile critics of the cultural mystification and economic devaluing of "women's work." Barry combines attention to the political economy and technology of the airline industry with perceptive readings of popular culture, newspapers, industry publications, and first-person accounts. In so doing, she provides a potent mix of social and cultural history and a major contribution to the history of women's work and working women's activism.

Building Brand Communities: How Organizations Succeed by Creating Belonging

Summary

An authentic brand community is more than just people buying your product or working alongside one another. This audiobook articulates the critical roles of mutual concern, common values, and shared experiences in creating fiercely loyal customer and collaborator relationships. Smart organizations know that creating communities is the key to unlocking unprecedented outcomes. But too many mistakenly rely on superficial transactional relationships as a foundation for community, when really people want something deeper. Carrie Melissa Jones and Charles Vogl argue that in an authentic and enriching community, members have mutual concern for one another, share personal values, and join together in meaningful shared experiences, whether online or off. On the deepest level, brands must help members grow into who they want to be. Jones and Vogl present practices used by global brands like Yelp, Etsy, Twitch, Harley Davidson, Salesforce, Airbnb, Sephora, and others to connect in a meaningful way with the people critical for their success. They articulate how authentic communities can serve organizational goals in seven different areas: Innovation, talent recruitment, customer retention, marketing, customer service, building transformational movements, and creating community forums. They also reveal principles to grow a new brand community to critical mass. This is the first comprehensive guide to a crucial differentiator that gives organizations access to untapped enthusiasm and engagement.

Saving Face

Summary

Organizations now need to attract, retain, and motivate teams and employees across distance, time zones, and cultural differences. Building authentic and lasting human relations may be the most important calling for leaders in this century. According to management and global leadership specialist Maya Hu-Chan, the concept of “saving face” can help any leader preserve dignity and create more empathetic cross-cultural relationships. “Face” represents one’s self-esteem, self-worth, identity, reputation, status, pride, and dignity. Saving face is often understood as saving someone from embarrassment, but it’s also about developing an understanding of the background and motivations of others to discover the unique facets we all possess. Without that understanding, we risk causing others to lose face without even knowing it. Hu-Chan explains saving face through anecdotes and practical tools, such as her BUILD leadership model (benevolence, understanding, interacting, learning, and delivery). This book illustrates how we can give face to create positive first impressions, avoid causing others to lose face, and, most importantly, build trust and lasting relationships inside and outside the workplace. Praise for the book: Maya Hu-Chan shares a blueprint for becoming a more empathetic, self-aware, and inclusive leader. Saving Face guides us to consider different perspectives, to think first and speak last, and to respect others above all else.” (Frances Hesselbein, former CEO, Girl Scouts of the USA, and Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient)
