Weight Loss for Middle-Aged Women

Summary

You want to lose weight, and you know losing weight can make you healthier and able to move more freely... yet you don’t lose weight. Weight Loss for Middle-Aged Women explores the psychological reasons for that paradox, looks at habits that may be holding you back, and offers strategies to get your weight loss back on track. Strategies such as these can really make a difference: Avoid liquid calories. Because the body does not register liquid calories the way it does solid calories, you may be consuming many calories without feeling satiated. Get adequate sleep. Sleep deprivation may have contributed to your weight gain and may prevent you from reaching your goal weight. Drink green tea. Before you dismiss this as too simplistic, how would you like to burn an extra 70 calories a day without doing anything different except drinking green tea? That new habit, all by itself, could eliminate seven and a half pounds of excess weight over a year, a study showed. Switch out those sugary drinks for green tea to lose weight even faster.

Summary

Did you know that God forbids the tying of shoelaces on Saturdays? Or that humans emit a colorful aura that can be discerned only with a Third Eye? That bountiful harvest requires the flinging of a live goat from a church bell tower? That instead of wishing upon a star, we can wish upon a...cow? Well into the 21st century, our species continues to participate in beliefs and customs that seem more suited to the Bronze Age than the Information Age, some of which involve poisonous snakes, holy smoke, urine bubbles, crystals, tarot cards, aliens, costumed virgins, and, of course, an offering plate. Join Seth Andrews for a random romp across the planet and a humorous look at some of humanity's Sacred Cows.

Cover art for Human Psychology 202

Human Psychology 202

Summary

Humans are complex creatures. When confronted with all that life has to offer, they are still able to twist their thinking into negativity and self-defeating behavior. Why and how does that happen? To understand how people behave, it's important to be aware of how distorted thinking can undermine even the smartest people. It has nothing to do with intelligence. Our behavior is the result of how we react to our thoughts. In this audiobook, Human Psychology 202: Understanding How People Really Think So That You Know How to Deal with Them, we will discuss some of the many ways incomplete or immature thinking can derail people's lives. Our thoughts are the results of our feelings, and how we process those feelings into thoughts is important. Feelings are automatic, thoughts are not. We have a choice in how we think and react. This audiobook explains that when we limit our thoughts, we limit the way we live. When we narrow our thinking to all or nothing thinking, catastrophic thinking, must thinking, or emotional thinking, we limit our possibilities accordingly. When we are alive, we think. It's the contents of our thoughts that determines the quality of our lives. We may blame ability, luck, or circumstances, but those are simply excuses for refusing to broaden our thinking. Human Psychology 202 will teach you how thinking affects your actions and how to deal with frustrating people who refuse to examine, or change, their way of thinking.

Cover art for The Book of the Dead

The Book of the Dead

Summary

Given the abundance of funerary artifacts that have been found within the sands of Egypt, it sometimes seems as though the Ancient Egyptians were more concerned with the matters of the afterlife than they were with matters of the life they experienced from day to day. This is underscored most prominently by the pyramids, which have captured the world’s imagination for centuries.  Generations have viewed them as symbols of a lost past, which in turn is often portrayed as a world full of romance and mystery. This verbal meaning has become associated with the structures through the tourism industry, where intrigue obviously boosts ticket sales. In fact, the Egyptian pyramids are so old that they were also drawing tourists even in ancient times. In antiquity, the Great Pyramid of Giza was listed as one of Seven Ancient Wonders of the World, and it is the only one still surviving today.  Though the ancient tombs have been extensively plundered, they still stand as gateways to the afterlife that provide a murky window into the past of a fascinating civilization. Most importantly, the relatively untouched tomb of the young King Tutankhamun offered clear insight. Many of the objects that were discovered in Tutankhamun’s tomb were clearly made specifically for him and his burial, such as the coffins, funerary masks, canopic equipment and statues.  To accomplish all the necessities the Egyptians believed in, they relied on spells and invocations, which were collected in a series of funerary texts such as the Pyramid Texts. By the era of the New Kingdom, the most popular funerary text was The Book of the Dead, one of the most evocative titles of literature in the history of humankind. Its mystical writings offer a glimpse into a realm of magical thinking beyond the skills of most writers of fiction. The Book of the Dead has enraptured scholars and laymen for centuries. For that reason, it may surprise many that The Book of the Dead does not actually exist as a book. In fact, what is referred to as The Book of the Dead today is actually the accumulation of around 400 spells from the whole gamut of Egyptian history. The name was given to this collection of texts by modern Egyptologists, but the fact remains that no one text contains all of the spells associated with this body of work.  To the ancient Egyptians, these spells would have loosely contributed to a collection known as The Book of Coming Forth by Day. This moniker is extremely important to the understanding of its primary purpose: returning from the depths of “night.” The Egyptian concept of “coming forth by day” meant rebirth, just as the sun is “reborn” each morning after its “death” at sunset. In other words, rather than the work being any kind of magical book to summon, speak with, or fight against “the dead”, it is actually a manual for the dead to go beyond their physical death and “come forth” into an eternal state of bliss.

Charles Dickens Classics Collection: A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and The Chimes

Summary

Unique to this title is: A historical introduction A study of the themes present in A Tale of Two Cities, A Christmas Carol and The Chimes You may of course skip all of it and go straight to the main title if you do not want any spoilers and come back later to the beginning. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He was born in 1812 in Portsmouth. When his father was sent to jail because of unsettled debt, Dickens had to leave school and get a job in a factory. Although he lacked formal education and never had a chance to finish his schooling, Dickens successfully edited a weekly journal for 20 years, wrote 15 novels, five novellas, hundreds of short stories and non-fiction articles, gave lectures and performed readings, and lobbied passionately for social reforms in general, and children's rights in particular. Dickens is believed to be the best novelist of the Victorian era and he became very popular during his lifetime. His novels are still widely read and translated. A Tale of Two Cities is a historical fiction first published in weekly installments in 1859. The plot takes place in London and Paris between 1775 and 1792. Eighteenth-century France and England are both ruled by fear and oppression. The upper classes live in luxury while common people suffer and starve. However, there is a difference. The novel starts with the words, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times” and we soon learn of the major difference between the two countries. In A Christmas Carol a mean old man named Ebenezer Scrooge sits at his office on a cold Christmas Eve. His clerk, Bob Cratchit, shivers with cold because Scrooge refuses to spend money on heating. Scrooge's nephew, Fred, visits him and invites him to a Christmas party, as he does every year. Two gentlemen drop by and ask Scrooge for a contribution to their charity. Scrooge reacts to both his nephew and the two gentlemen with bitterness and venom. Later that evening, after returning to his dark, cold apartment, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his dead partner, Jacob Marley. The story of The Chimes concerns a working class man who comes to believe that he is worthless and worries that working-class people are wicked by nature. On New Year's Eve, some goblins show him visions of what will become of his loved ones if they are allowed to continue believing that they are worthless and wicked. Enjoy this timeless classic collection!

Captain James Cook

Summary

"To boldly go where no man has gone before" was a phrase made popular by Gene Rodenberry in a science fiction setting, but it was certainly the creed of countless explorers during the Age of Discovery and afterwards. In fact, as recently as the mid-18th century, a young sailor named James Cook determined to go "farther than any man has been before me, but as far as I think it is possible for a man to go." And unlike so many others who tried, he did just that. Cook was a war veteran who participated in the French & Indian War, but he remains best known over 250 years later for sailing thousands of miles across much of the Pacific, mapping regions, naming new places, and making scientific discoveries. Indeed, there are plenty of similarities between Cook's three voyages and the famed "five year mission" of the Enterprise. Like Captain Picard, Cook's missions were supposed to be peaceful and focused primarily on scientific research. His first voyage, which took him to New Zealand, was meant to transport astronomers to study Venus, and his second voyage also carried several scientists tasked with "exploring strange new worlds" that Cook and his crew encountered. At the same time, Cook also seemed to run across many of the same problems faced by explorers across all centuries, even the fabled 23rd century.

The Rise and Fall of the Roman and British Empire plus the Crusades

Summary

How did we get here, to this time and place in history? Are we repeating history's mistakes because we did not learn about the pivotal events that shaped the modern world? This three-book history course helps you quickly understand the nuances and the impact of three crucial periods portrayed in countless films: the Crusades and of the rise and fall of two great empires, the Roman and British. The culture, technology, law, and military organization of the Roman Empire shaped western civilization. Determined to spread their rule, the Romans succeeded magnificently until human nature and other factors led to the empire's collapse. Were current relationships between Christians and Muslims determined when the knights of the Crusades rode off on their grand quest? By the beginning of the 20th century, the British Empire and its superior navy claimed territory larger than that of any other empire in history, but its overreach foretold its downfall. This insightful and critically acclaimed history of the British Empire spans from the 17th century to contemporary time and combines comprehensive scholarship with popular history.

The Progressive Pope

Summary

The Political Pope: Francis and His Fractured Church is the new book from best-selling author Mark Steinberg. Pope Francis is one of the most revered figures in the world today. His Catholic church, rocked by scandals, is in danger of being torn apart. Sexual abuse among the clergy, mismanagement of church funds, blackmail, and bickering have divided the Vatican and the Catholic church from Argentina to Zaire and everywhere in between. In this deeply researched and yet still highly accessible book about the successor to Benedict XVI and Pope John Paul II, Steinburg takes us through Pope Francis' early days as a parish priest in Argentina, his Jesuit education, his role in Argentina's infamous "Dirty War", and his time as a bishop and a cardinal at the seat of the Catholic church in Rome. The book climaxes with the papal election of Francis to the highest religious post in the Western world. Can the charismatic and hugely popular pope make the reforms his ailing church so desperately needs before it becomes irrelevant in the face of abuse scandals and rising public indifference to religion? Can Pope Francis re-inspire the faithful and return the church to the glory it used to possess?

King Xerxes I: The Life and Legacy of the Achaemenid Persian Empire's Most Notorious Ruler

Summary

One of the Persian Empire’s most famous figures is King Xerxes I, if only because he led the Second Persian War against the Greeks. Thanks to legendary clashes at Thermopylae and Salamis, the Persian leader has remained legendary, and the war was a veritable clash of civilizations. Had the Persians triumphed, the Golden Age of Athens would have been snuffed out, and Greece would never have formed the backbone of Roman and Western culture. Simply put, the West as it is today might never have existed. Not surprisingly, the majority of surviving sources regarding Xerxes are the product of Greek writers, so it was inevitable that the Persian king has been depicted in unflattering terms for thousands of years. The details of his invasion of Greece cast him as the villain in the dramatic Greek retelling of the tragic 300 Spartans holding the pass at Thermopylae, and focus on the loss at Salamis that solidified his reputation as a failure despite another 15 years of successful rule after withdrawing from the Greek mainland. Although Herodotus’s Histories offer a less biased account than some later sources, he still depicted Xerxes as a figure of tragic failings, listening too often to the wrong councilors and eventually collapsing on the weight of his own hubris. This classic appearance as a tragic hero figure gives some pause for doubt, as the literary stereotype is almost too perfect and suggests a lack of depth and nuance that characterizes all accurate investigations of historical individuals.  These early images were only exacerbated by Alexander the Great and his biographers, who maintained a fiery hatred toward Xerxes for his burning of Athens. They targeted many of his building projects after their capture of Persepolis, and they pushed an even bleaker picture of the king, one of an idle, indolent, cowardly, and corrupt ruler. The continuation of this can be traced throughout the passing centuries - Plato considered Xerxes to be a poor reflection of a great father, and another contemporary, Lysias, wrote in his Funeral Oration how Xerxes “had held Greece in contempt, but had been deceived in his hopes, who was dishonored by the event, galled by the disaster, and angered against its authors, and who was unused to ill-hap and unacquainted with true men.” Sir Walter Raleigh wrote a History of the World in which, despite including an anecdote in which Alexander considered re-erecting a statue of Xerxes due to the king’s virtues, he went on to describe Xerxes as impious, brutal, wicked, foolish, cowardly, and merciless. Author Henry Rawlinson, writing in 1867, claimed that Xerxes’s character was far inferior to his more admirable predecessors, while David Stronach asserted in 1978 that Xerxes was significantly less intelligent than his father had been. As usual, the truth lies far more towards the middle, even as Xerxes’s frequent portrayal as the villain in the story of a fierce, brave defense of Greece against overwhelming odds has made him a less than popular subject for biographers and historical investigations. However, a few individuals have undertaken to explore the true complexities of his character, and through these works and a few ancient sources, most particularly Herodotus, a more accurate picture can be derived, even if the bias of Greek accounts still colors the information. In reality, very little objective information exists as to the personality and character of the king, so the truth must be estimated through a careful interpretation of his deeds. King Xerxes I: The Life and Legacy of the Achaemenid Persian Empire’s Most Notorious Ruler looks at the life of the Persian leader and the major conflicts he led. You will learn about Xerxes like never before.

The Cathars

Summary

"The Roman Church...[says] that the heretics they persecute are the church of wolves. But this is absurd, for the wolves have always pursued and killed the sheep, and today it would have to be the other way around for the sheep to be so mad as to bite, pursue, and kill the wolves, and for the wolves to be so patient as to let the sheep devour them!" (Excerpt from the alleged writings of the Cathars) The unique, copper-red hue of the naturally cracked earth on the foothills of the French Pyrenees is obviously stunning, but if the rumors are to be believed, they, too, are rich with medicinal properties. For centuries, locals have been scooping up and bottling the precious dirt and turning them into an array of poultices, salves, and even tonics. This land is also home to several legends and local traditions. When the earth is drenched by heavy storms, the crumbling red soil drifts into the River Aude, staining the water with crimson. This beautiful, yet haunting phenomenon, which the locals call the “blood of the Cathars”, is a symbolic reminder of the blood shed by these “heretics” at the hands of the Catholic Church. Despite the controversial events, and their supposed heresy, it seemed that the fall of the Cathars brought an everlasting curse upon the region. As one unnamed farmer, documented by French medievalist Jean Duernoy, put it, “Since the heretics were chased away from Sabartes, there is no longer good weather in this area.” Another notary from Tarn echoed his sentiments, asserting, “When the heretics lived in these lands, we did not have so many storms and lightning. Now that we are with Franciscans and Dominicans, the lightning strikes more frequently....” But who were these Cathars, and why was the Catholic Church so committed to getting rid of them? The Cathars: The History and Legacy of the Gnostic Christian Sect During the Middle Ages examines the origins of the cult, their fascinating belief system, their gradual development over the years, and the events that contributed to their epic downfall. You will learn about the Cathars like never before.

East Germany: The History and Legacy of the Soviet Satellite State Established after World War II

Summary

In the wake of World War II, the European continent was devastated, and the conflict left the Soviet Union and the United States as uncontested superpowers. This ushered in over 45 years of the Cold War and a political alignment of Western democracies against the Communist Soviet bloc that produced conflict with allies on each side fighting, even as the American and Soviet militaries never engaged each other. Though it never got "hot", the Cold War was a tense era until the dissolution of the USSR, and nothing symbolized the split more than the Berlin Wall, which literally divided the city. Berlin had been a flash point even before World War II ended, and the city was occupied by the different Allies even as the close of the war turned them into adversaries. After the Soviets' blockade of West Berlin was prevented by the Berlin Airlift, the Eastern Bloc and the Western powers continued to control different sections of the city, and by the 1960s, East Germany was pushing for a solution to the problem of an enclave of freedom within its borders. West Berlin was a haven for highly-educated East Germans who wanted freedom and a better life in the West, and this "brain drain" was threatening the survival of the East German economy. In order to stop this, access to the West through West Berlin had to be cut off, so in August 1961, Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev authorized East German leader Walter Ulbricht to begin construction of what would become known as the Berlin Wall. The wall, begun on Sunday August 13, would eventually surround the city, in spite of global condemnation, and the Berlin Wall itself would become the symbol for Communist repression in the Eastern Bloc. It also ended Khrushchev's attempts to conclude a peace treaty among the Four Powers (the Soviets, the Americans, the United Kingdom, and France) and the two German states. Things came to a head in 1989. With rapid change throughout Europe, the wall faced a challenge it could not contain, the challenge of democracy’s spread. On the night of November 9, 1989, the Berlin Wall was effectively removed from the midst of the city it so long divided. Of course, the Berlin Wall also literally divided West Germany from East Germany. Until the unification of the country again in 1990, East Germany was predicated on, fueled by, and in the end, contingent on, the superpowers' rivalry. The history of East Germany was a remarkable one, from its chaotic origins through its ossification as a Stalinist regime, until the country collapsed along with the Berlin Wall. And in many ways, the legacy of East Germany is still around today; not only is Germany still marked by the division, but in some respects, the old frontier still represents different expectations, social conditions, and worldviews. East Germany: The History and Legacy of the Soviet Satellite State Established after World War II examines the controversial country and its place in the Cold War.

Carcassonne: The History and Legacy of the Castles, Campaigns, and Crimes in France's Fabled Walled City

Summary

Posted by the Porte Narbonne, or Narbonne Gate, the entrance of the fabled La Cite in Carcassonne is a striking bust that is often missed upon first glance, for it is overshadowed by the exquisitely preserved, millennia-old citadel in its background. But standing before the porte, her face draws one in - round, with plump cheeks, thin arches for eyebrows that follow the shape of her large, downturned eyes, wavy hair peeking out of her wimple - reminiscent of the "celestial" suns with human faces often seen in the bedroom décor of a hip, teenage girl from the '90s. Gaze upon her from a certain angle and distance, and it seems as if one of the iconic conical roofs behind her doubles as a russet-hued hennin. Garbed in a fine gown with flower accents embroidered on her sleeves and a fussy wimple and veil, the joyfully radiant face that welcomes visitors into the citadel hardly appears to be the "heroine" type. Rather, the way she is depicted here is what usually springs to mind at the mention of a classic damsel in distress. That being said, while this particular damsel was indeed distressed, she relied on no one to not only save herself from the plight at hand, but the entire citadel itself. This damsel, as inscribed on the plaque underneath the bust, is the beloved Dame Carcas, often billed by the locals as the star of the town's origin story. Carcassonne today is the capital of the Aude department in the Occitanie region of southwestern France, about 58 miles from Toulouse. It lies by the eastward bend of the glittering cobalt waters of the River Aude, which serves as a barrier between the two towns of the city: the Cité and the Ville Basse. It is the old Cité that attracts most of Carcassonne's visitors (three million of them each year), for it houses the historic fortress that looks like it came straight out of a fairy tale and supposedly became the muse behind the captivating castles featured in Walt Disney's acclaimed 1959 classic, Sleeping Beauty. But this breathtaking town is so much more than just the perfect spot for wedding shoots and social media narcissism, for it is a place that oozes medieval history. Carcassonne: The History and Legacy of the Castles, Campaigns, and Crimes in France's Fabled Walled City examines the origins of the site and its sweeping history.

Thomas Jefferson: The Failures and Greatness of an Ordinary Man

Summary

To study Jefferson is to ascend a mountain, its peak awash in veiling mists. He was the embodiment of the enlightenment man, the perfect synthesis of classicist, scientist, and visionary. How can we hope to understand such a towering figure? The Sage of Monticello, deified in American politics, speaks across the ages like a patriotic Moses, or Buddha, or Christ. Or so his disciples would have us believe. The real Thomas Jefferson was an ordinary man, with all the usual failings. Molded by the culture of the Virginia planter class, he fought against tyranny while oppressing his own slaves. He institutionalized racist attitudes, bickered with his rivals, lusted after other men's wives, and kept his own mixed-race children in bondage. Yet his accomplishments are too spectacular to be denied. The Declaration of Independence, the Louisiana Purchase, he even abolished taxes (for a while). As a Founding Father, his contributions eclipsed all the rest. Without Jefferson, the American experiment might have ended before it began. So how can we make sense of his personal failings in the context of his great works? Thomas Jefferson: The Failures and Greatness of an Ordinary Man looks at Jefferson from the ground up, finding handholds in his love of Greek literature and fine wine, his affection for friends and family, and the compromises he deemed necessary for the survival of the nation. By exploring his relationships, the listener is invited into Jefferson's sanctum sanctorum, to stare unblinking at his complexity and follow truth where it leads.

Dark Seduction

Summary

Seduction is one of the areas of life that has the potential to bring people the most pleasure and the most pain. If people are able to effectively move through life getting what they want and need out of romance and relationships then they are sure to be spared the pain of heartbreak and loneliness. If people are unable to master this area of existence then they set themselves up for disappointment and despair. Most people stumble through life, never taking conscious control of their seductive efforts, never figuring out exactly what it is that makes some people masters of seduction, and other people permanently alone and bitter. Dark Seduction by Michael Pace represents the pinnacle of dark seductive knowledge, which has been collected, tested, and understood by the seduction community. The fact that a secret society of seducers exists at all will be news to some people. This knowledge is so powerful that some governments have literally banned people from teaching it within their nation. Some of the most devastatingly effective pickup techniques of all time are detailed within these words. They may shock and surprise listeners - but they may well seduce them at the same time. What follows is a practical, psychological, and philosophical exploration of the topic of seduction, conducted from a dark perspective. It aims only to uncover the truth behind the secrets of seduction and present real, tried and tested information without any spin, gloss, or romantic distortion. The book is not for the faint of heart or weak of mind. It is amoral and will shock many. Proceed with caution.

The World's Most Dangerous Secret Societies

Summary

To some, the term "secret society" conjures up an image of a shadowy and elite cabal meeting behind smoke-filled rooms, discussing tactics of world domination and manipulation straight out of the most far-fetched espionage thrillers. To others, the image of secluded men (and occasionally women!) banding together in exotic garb to perform colorful ceremonies, impart hidden knowledge, and bestow fancy but incomprehensible titles upon one another springs to mind. But just how far-fetched and fanciful is the prospect of a secret society? Could it be that, in any given echelon of the population, there are groups that exercise inordinate amounts of power and influence over the rest of us? Could these exotic, members-only clubs really pose such an immediate threat to our well-being that our very way of life is endangered? Quite frankly, the disturbing answers to those particular questions are yes and yes. Right in our midst there absolutely exists clandestine organizations, consisting of both men and women, who wield a dangerous amount of influence and power over the entire world populace. In his book, entitled The World's Most Dangerous Secret Societies, author James Jackson explores these dangerous secret organizations and their members. He expounds upon their beliefs, hidden agendas, and their ultimate goals of a new world order and world domination. Here are a few of some of the dangerous secret societies that will be thoroughly examined. The Freemasons The Illuminati Skull and Bones The Bilderberg Group Council on Foreign Relations The Trilateral Commission The Society of Jesuits The Committee of 300 The Knights Templar And many more

The Gnostic Mystery

Summary

Comparative studies often reveal similarities between greatly different cultures, even if those cultures are geographically separated by thousands of miles or historically distinct by thousands of years. This has been especially true in religion where similar ideas have been propounded by tribes or clans that have on the surface no contact historically or geographically with one another. For the phenomenologist, this kind of transcultural link or synchronicity is important because it raises the question of how religious ideas emerge and develop over time. Are religious ideas part of an innate, biological, developmental sequence that manifest over the course of human evolution? Or are religious ideas simply the product of historical transfusion, played over the course in time where one tribe touches another tribe thereby transforming concepts in a very material and socially determinable way? Although this thesis does not answer those profound questions, it does provide a remarkable example of religious synchronicity, where two diverse spiritual traditions, Gnostic and Sant, posit very similar ideas about salvation and the nature of God. In this thesis, I demonstrate how Gnostic and Sant Mat ideas concerning ontology, cosmology, and soteriology are remarkably close, despite the fact that the Gnostic tradition arose in the Middle East in the first and second century C.E. and that Sant Mat emerged in North India in the 14th and 15th century. My main sources are the Nag Hammadi Library for the Gnostic tradition and the writings of Tulsi Sahib and Shiv Dayal Singh for the Sant tradition.

The Patty Hearst Kidnapping

Summary

For most of the 20th century, the name Hearst was most closely associated with one of America's most famous (and infamous) newspaper magnates, William Garrison Hearst, whose life was the inspiration for Citizen Kane. But in the 1970s, his granddaughter Patricia made headlines thanks to a series of events that would wind up being one of the most bizarre chapters of the 20th century. In 1974, Hearst was a 19 year old college student at Berkeley when she was kidnapped by members of the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), an obscure left-wing group with ties to the local area. In fact, the SLA abducted Hearst in part because she lived nearby, and it was hoped that her famous lineage would help them ransom her, either in exchange for imprisoned members of their group or for money that could be donated throughout the community. Those plans would never come to fruition, and as the SLA got more and more frustrated, they continued threatening their captive. Hearst recalled that the group's leader, Donald DeFreeze, "told me that the war council had decided or was thinking about killing me or me staying with them, and that I better start thinking about that as a possibility." The Heart kidnapping helped propel the SLA into the headlines, but what followed was almost too much for anyone to believe. Whether through coercion or some other factors, Hearst became the SLA's most high profile member, and she was involved in the group's robbery of the Sunset District branch of the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco. Surveillance photos of Hearst carrying a gun shocked the nation, and Patty immediately became one of the country's most notorious fugitives. When she was caught in 1975, Hearst called herself an "Urban Guerilla" and continued to be an advocate of the SLA, but within weeks, within weeks she had disavowed the group. As a result, the trial would hinge on issues like Stockholm Syndrome, coercion, rape, and even the belief that Hearst had been brainwashed. While the prosecution tried to depict her as being a willing bank robber, her defense argued, "There was talk about her dying, and she wanted to survive." Eventually, she was convicted and sentenced to seven years in jail by a judge, who asserted "rebellious young people who, for whatever reason, become revolutionaries and voluntarily commit criminal acts, will be punished." However, her sentence was commuted by President Carter a few years later, and President Clinton pardoned her altogether decades later. To this day, the Hearst case remains controversial and is still the subject of debate. Through it all, Hearst has claimed she had virtually no free will: "I had been, you know, held in the closet for two months and, you know, abused in all manner of ways. I was very good at doing what I was told."

Intuitive Eating

Summary

Intuitive eating is the opposite of dieting. It takes into consideration the whole person's health and wellness. With traditional diets, when you restrict a certain food item, there is an emotional response. The internal response occurs when a forbidden food is eaten, such as feelings of guilt or failure. Success is short-lived if restrictions in caloric intake and fasting cause the opposite to occur later: over-eating or cheating. The intuitive approach takes into consideration your internal signals and responses, not the number of calories or carbs you need to limit or keep track of. The idea of this method is to stop the refusal of food choices based on rules. Listen to your body's response and emotional needs first, and the full benefit of intuitive eating will follow.

Crusader Castles

Summary

A series of mountain chains frame the Levantine coast, growing in height as they approach modern-day Lebanon. These provided a natural defense along the important coast, and the few passes through these mountain ranges were the focal points of movement and communication. For this reason, these locations were where many crusader castles were erected. Bristling with fortifications, these impressive structures were occupied by orders of knights who came to the Holy Land with the Pope's blessing, and who have gained a most romantic status in history. These Crusaders were called al Faranj ("Franks") by the Arabs in the Holy Land, reflecting the French origins of many of the knights, even though the knights, soldiers, and pilgrims came to the Holy Land from all over Europe, and in particular from southern Italy, Germany, and England. For the men who built and manned these castles, they were much more than buildings surrounded by stone walls or wooden palisades. They were also more than a headquarters for knights and their armies during battle, or a storehouse for goods in the remoteness of the Levant. These castles were the central focal point for those who held them and those trying to conquer them, and it would not be an exaggeration to claim that castles were the nexus for much activity and conflict within the Holy Lands. At the same time, the castles were filled with the hustle and bustle of activity caused by a wide range of actors even in times of relative peace and stability. Men-at-arms were the soldiers who manned the castle, protected the borders of the Crusader states, and followed the orders of their noble knight lords, but the castles also served as a gathering place for skilled craftsmen such as blacksmiths, potters, stone masons, bakers, carpenters, and the like. Many served as religious centers in their own right, containing at least one chapel of either Christian or Muslim faith. The Muslim efforts to reclaim and rule the Levant were just as important and interesting as those of the Crusaders. Initially led by the atabegs of Aleppo, and later by the renowned Saladin (known also as Salah Ed¬Din), various Muslim forces took and retook the Holy City of Jerusalem. The cycle of conflicts between the Crusader states and the Muslim armies was disrupted in 1260 CE when the Mongols, having roved without obstruction across Eurasia, invaded the region with the support of the Armenians and some of the Crusader states. However, they were eventually defeated by the mighty Mamelukes of Egypt, who in turn focused their attention on consolidating their control over the Near East and eradicating the European presence in the region. Finally, in 1302 CE the Mamelukes conquered the last Crusader stronghold at Arwad, leaving one last remaining Crusader state - the Kingdom of Cyprus, which held out until it was invaded by the Ottomans in 1571 CE.

Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Summary

If your child has recently been diagnosed with oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), or if you believe your child may have ODD, then this audiobook is for you! New and improved version released July 2015!  Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a disorder where a child shows a constant display of negativity, defiance, disobedience, and downright violence toward their parents, teachers, or any other authority figure. When a child has ODD, he or she will often be persistently stubborn; resisting any request or directive made by an adult. He or she will be unwilling to compromise or negotiate with adults or even with their peers. These children will do things just to test your patience and limits and will always refuse to accept they have done something wrong, even when they have.  The important thing to understand is these children are not intentionally devilish. They believe in their heart the requests you make of them are unjust and unreasonable. Therefore, saying "No" is the best thing to do from their perspective. Often, this kind of behavior will cause the child to suffer socially, academically, and, most importantly, emotionally.  Luckily, this disorder is treatable, and with proper guidance, a parent can achieve great progress with his or her child. If you are a parent who has a child with ODD, then this audiobook will show you some ways you can cope with and eventually treat your child so you can have a peaceful and cooperative home once again.  Here is a preview of what you'll learn: Beginning with what you can control  Managing your anger  Getting professional help Five traits of a strong parent  How to face challenges  Don't take everything to heart  Five key skills to adopt and develop  Being the parent your child needs  Much, much more!

William Shakespeare

Summary

William Shakespeare was the most brilliant writer in the history of the English language. But his life is a complete mystery to us. No biographies were written for almost 100 years after his death. His friends, family, and all those who knew him as a poet in London's theatrical scene died before anyone could ask them: who was Shakespeare? What was he like? What were his habits, his amusements, his passions? The only answers we have are those we can divine from his plays and poems. Shakespeare's uncanny ability to grasp the technical languages of skilled professions makes it difficult to judge what precisely he got up to during his "lost years"- the two periods of life in which he disappears from the historical record entirely. In this book, you will learn what it is we know for certain about William Shakespeare, and by delving into the plays, you will discover all that can be surmised about his uneasy relationship with authority, the religious conflicts in his family, his relationship with the father who fulfilled his lifelong dream to become a gentleman, and his own unexpected ambition: to become a wealthy, respectable country landlord in his hometown of Stratford.

The Gulags

1 rating

Summary

One of the most idiosyncratic horrors of Soviet Russia was the Gulag system, an extensive network of forced labor and concentration camps. Part of the rationale behind this system was that it could serve as slave labor in the drive for industrialization while also serving as a form of punishment. The name Gulag is in fact an acronym, approximating to “Main Administration of Camps” (in Russian: Glavnoe Upravlenie Lagerei) and operated by the Soviet Union’s Ministry of the Interior. The Gulag consisted of internment camps, forced labor camps, psychiatric hospital facilities, and special laboratories, and its prisoners were known as zeks. Such was the closed and secretive nature of the Soviet state that to this day, knowledge of the Gulag system comes mainly from Western studies, firsthand accounts by prisoners such as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and some local studies after the fall of communism. The most recognizable version of the Gulag, a term that was never pluralized in Russia itself, existed from the 1930s to 1950s, a period in which a huge network of camps and prisons was established across the vast Soviet federation. Prisoners were often used as forced labor, made to do physically arduous and soul-destroying tasks. Some workers helped to build large infrastructure projects, and indeed, the system was partly rationalized in terms of economics. By the early 1960s, Gulags were synonymous with various forms of punishments, including house arrest, imprisonment in isolated places, or confinement to a mental hospital where a prisoner would be declared insane or diagnosed with a “political” form of psychosis. In its later years, the Gulags held a particular place in the public’s imagination, both within the USSR and in the outside world. They could mean exile, brutal punishment, or simply being banished to Siberia. Though it’s often forgotten today, in many respects, the Gulags represented a continuation (albeit a more far-reaching version) of the kind of punishment meted out during the Russian Empire under the Romanov dynasty, which was overthrown in 1917. Therefore, it is necessary to examine the system in the context of the broader history of Russia and its empire, even as the system of repression, imprisonment, and punishment persisted for decades in the Soviet Union and has been primarily aligned with the rule of one leader: Josef Stalin. The USSR collapsed in December 1991, and it can be argued that the labor camps were not only integral to the very existence of the Soviet Union, but also a damning indictment of the Soviets’ failed experiment in communist totalitarianism. The Gulags: The History and Legacy of the Notorious Soviet Labor Camps examines the rise of the labor camps, how they were institutionalized by Soviet leaders, and what life was like for the prisoners.

People Born in April: Anti-Horoscope: Human 'Software', Book 4

Summary

Did you know that, for example, people who were born on April 5th leap years or April 6th common years are vagrants "here today and gone tomorrow", and are "on the road" all their lives? For them, a good time or fun "to the max" includes...going to prison. Did you know that there are people in this world who not only don't fear prison, but also feel at home and comfortable there? Or, for example, did you know that people who were born on April 9th of leap years or April 10th of common years are not only like the biblical Buridan's donkey by their character, but also create situations in which they there is always a choice (for example, creating "doublets" like an apartment and a country house, two cars, a spouse and lover, etc.)? This means that if you have romantic or family relations with one of them - you need to be ready to not only observe every day how he or she is torn between "doublets," but also engages in "games for three"! Hence the question: are you sure that you know people whom you think you know as your own self? Yes, of course you know them - if we take word-play into account. You really do know them, like you know yourself - that is, just as bad! You know your own and other people's masks and roles, but that is all. You do not believe this? Then, open this book and see for yourself! This book is for those people who are fed up with "horoscopism", who are tired of listening to nonsense about themselves and other people - from psychologists or their "all-knowing" relatives, friends, and acquaintances. It will help you save not just some time in your life, but your whole life, because otherwise you will spend your entire life on something that is a priori impossible. And, it is impossible not because you are idiots, but because Homo sapiens cannot fully know themselves and other people without an external (and, most importantly, objective) source.

Rules for Dating a Married Man

Summary

Women who are involved in an affair with a married man often have to walk a balanced tightrope between satisfying their own needs as well as those of the man with whom they're involved. For most women, these affairs usually turn out to be nerve-wracking experiences meandering among emotions such as excitement, thrill, and the fears of rejection and abandonment. This is primarily because these women often don't understand what her partner truly wants from her, emotionally, physically, or even psychologically.  The biggest problem in such an arrangement is that one person often holds more psychological power than the other - and it's usually the married one. This particular imbalance doesn't typically exist - to such a tangible degree - in conventional relationships, where both parties involved have equal amounts to lose or gain. It is this imbalance which often leaves one or both parties confused about their roles and the dynamics in the affair.  The purpose of this audiobook is to help you figure out exactly what your man wants (and needs) from you, and to help you to enjoy your life while maintaining your own sense of integrity and self-esteem.  So, for all you ladies who enjoy walking the spicier road of life, this audiobook will not only help you fulfill your desire of becoming the perfect mate to your married companion, but it will also help you avoid the pitfalls that usually accompany such relationships.  Note: While this audiobook may be targeted primarily toward women in heterosexual relationships, the lessons within it are equally applicable to men as well, irrespective of your sexual orientation.

Divided Highways

Summary

In Divided Highways, Tom Lewis offers an encompassing account of highway development in the United States. In the early twentieth century Congress created the Bureau of Public Roads to improve roads and the lives of rural Americans. The Bureau was the forerunner of the Interstate Highway System of 1956, which promoted a technocratic approach to modern road building sometimes at the expense of individual lives, regional characteristics, and the landscape. With thoughtful analysis and engaging prose Lewis charts the development of the Interstate system, including the demographic and economic pressures that influenced its planning and construction and the disputes that pitted individuals and local communities against engineers and federal administrators. This is a story of America's hopes for its future life and the realities of its present condition. It is an engaging history of the people and policies that profoundly transformed the American landscape - and the daily lives of Americans. In this updated edition of Divided Highways, Lewis brings his story of the Interstate system up to date, concluding with Boston's troubled and yet triumphant Big Dig project, the growing antipathy for big federal infrastructure projects, and the uncertain economics of highway projects both present and future.

The Severan Dynasty: The History and Legacy of the Ancient Roman Empire's Rulers Before Rome's Imperial Crisis

Summary

“If a man were called upon to fix that period in the history of the world during which the condition of the human race was most happy and prosperous he would, without hesitation, name that which elapsed from the deaths of Domitian to the accession of Commodus.” (Edward Gibbon) “The Five Good Emperors,” a reference to the five emperors who ruled the Roman Empire between 96 and 180 CE (Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius), was a term first coined by Machiavelli and later adopted and popularized by historian Edward Gibbon, who said that under these men, the Roman Empire “was governed by absolute power under the guidance of wisdom and virtue.” The Severan dynasty came shortly after the Five Good Emperors, and it also consisted of five emperors who ruled the empire from 193-235, except for a brief interlude between 217 and 218 when Macrinus held the imperial throne. In chronological order, the five were Septimius Severus the Founder (193-211), Caracalla (198-217), Geta (209-211), Elagabalus (218-221), and Alexander Severus (222-235). Their reigns coincided with the period in Roman history characterized by academics as the "High Point" of the empire, but this specific dynastic period, following the troubled years after the rule of Marcus Aurelius’ son Commodus, did not see the empire return to the heights reached under the Five Good Emperors. It was a period in which the inherent weaknesses of the imperial system were exacerbated, and the policies of successive emperors paved the way for the era generally known as Rome’s Imperial Crisis or “The Time of Chaos” (235-284).  The Severans' story encapsulates many highs and lows, including able and venal emperors, expansion and loss of territory, great artistic achievements, and intellectual advancements coupled with some of the worst cruelty ever perpetrated by Romans. The Severans have also fared well historically thanks to their successors, because the 50 years following the assassination of Severus Alexander on March 19, 235, has been generally regarded by academics as one of the lowest points in the history of the Roman Empire. Severus Alexander was the last of the Severan emperors, and the subsequent years of crisis (235-285) were characterized by a series of short reigns, usually ending in the violent death of the reigning emperor. At the same time, this period of time also saw the empire beset by threatening forces on all sides. The Romans faced a newly resurgent Persia in the east, as well as significant forces from German tribes on the Rhine and Goths along the Danube. The various conflicts would result in the unprecedented death of a sitting emperor in battle, which took place in 251 with Emperor Decius, and Emperor Valerian was also captured in 260.

Cosa Nostra: The Notorious History and Legacy of the Sicilian Mafia

1 rating

Summary

"[T]he term mafia found a class of violent criminals ready and waiting for a name to define them, and, given their special character and importance in Sicilian society, they had the right to a different name from that defining vulgar criminals in other countries." (Leopoldo Franchetti, 1876)

It is hard to find an island on the map more central than Sicily. Located at the crossroads between Europe and Africa, and between the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, Sicily has rarely been governed as an independent, unified state, yet the island has always occupied a front-row seat to some of the most important events in history, and nowhere is this more obvious than during antiquity.

Over the course of the 19th century, the people of Sicily found themselves at the center of a struggle for freedom, one that ended up being long and often very bloody. It was during these crucial years of struggle that the Sicilian mafia, La Cosa Nostra ("Our Thing"), started to take shape. The original word "mafia" was a part of Palermitan slang, and although the origins of the word are not completely certain, some linguistic historians believe it originally meant "flashy". One historian of the mafia, Salvatore Lupo, helpfully suggests that it was used in its earliest iterations to vaguely refer to a "pathological relationship among politics, society, and criminality."

In response to the rise of the mafia, the Italian state propagated a doctrine of Sicilian backwardness, which they used to introduce martial law and suspend civil liberties, under the pretext that they were not "ready" for the freedoms enjoyed by other Italian regions. Northerners and foreigners mistakenly (and snobbishly) believed that the mafia was just a relic of the primitive, peasant culture that had dominated the island for centuries, and that it was destined to die out once the island had been properly absorbed into the dominant, mainland culture. Others hypothesized that the corruption in Sicilian culture was just a holdover from the Bourbon government and would soon be extinguished once a formal transition was completed.

Of course, they proved to be dead wrong. The Sicilian mafia was not a criminal underworld or a form of political rebellion, but more of a kingdom within a kingdom. In other words, according to historians of the mafia, it was a network of hidden power, an alternative hierarchy that sometimes worked in concert with and sometimes superseded official forms of law and order.

By 1890, the Cosa Nostra had already developed into a sophisticated criminal organization with a great deal of blood on its hands. In fact, its tentacles reached into the highest levels of politics and beyond the borders of Sicily and Italy, traveling across the Atlantic to the United States. Today, their power has been dwarfed by the Neapolitan mafia, La Camorra, yet the Cosa Nostra has continued to wreak havoc in Sicily. In 1992, they were responsible for one of the most high-profile assassinations in Italy since the fall of fascism.

Ironically, the murderous actions of a small segment of society have caused the Sicilian people in general to be perceived as "mafiosi", even though the vast majority of them have been victims rather than perpetrators. Cosa Nostra: The Notorious History and Legacy of the Sicilian Mafia examines how the world’s most famous mob formed, its inner workings, and the events that made it feared around the world. You will learn about the Sicilian mafia like never before.
