Summary

Please note: this is a summary and analysis of The Glass Castle and not the original book. Preview: Jeannette Walls chronicles all the heartbreak, deprivation, humor, and love of her childhood in The Glass Castle, a memoir of growing up dirt-poor on a cross-country odyssey with her charismatic, but alcoholic, father and her codependent mother. Jeannette began thinking of her childhood after spotting her mother, Rose Mary, rummaging through trash in New York City. Her parents were basically living on the street, but offers of help were always rejected. Jeannette went home to her husband's apartment on Park Avenue. She arranged to have lunch with her mom, who advised her to stop feeling guilty, accept her parents as they were, and stop hiding the truth about them. Taking this advice, Jeannette started writing her story. Her first memory went back to a trailer park in Arizona. At the age of three, she spent six weeks in a hospital after her pink tutu caught fire while she was boiling hot dogs with no supervision.... American Legends: The Life of Gary Cooper

Summary

"I looked it at like this way. To get folks to like you, as a screen player I mean, I figured you had to sort of be their ideal. I don't mean a handsome knight riding a white horse, but a fella who answered the description of a right guy." (Gary Cooper) A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. Hollywood has never had a shortage of actors who thrived in one genre, whether it was John Wayne in Westerns or James Cagney in gangster films, but few had success across the entire spectrum like Gary Cooper, who managed to earn five Academy Award nominations despite an untimely death that cut short his career. Those nominations came for comedies, Westerns, and dramas, with wins for High Noon and the World War I film Sergeant York. Given his accolades, a career that included roles in over 100 movies, and his immense popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, it's no wonder the American Film Institute ranked him the 11th greatest actor of the 20th century. In his typical manner, Cooper was often dismissive of his success and acting as a craft in general, but few represented the idea of understated masculinity and heroism quite like him. In his most famous role, as marshal Will Kane in the iconic Western movie High Noon, Cooper's understated style personified the notion that a hero was made of deeds, not words. Cooper became the beau ideal in other films, whether playing Lou Gehrig in The Pride of the Yankees or Alvin York in Sergeant York.

Mayapan: The History of the Mayan Capital

Summary

Many ancient civilizations have influenced and inspired people in the 21st century, like the Greeks and the Romans, but of all the world's civilizations, none have intrigued people more than the Mayans, whose culture, astronomy, language, and mysterious disappearance all continue to captivate people. At the heart of the fascination is Chichén Itzá, the most visited Mayan site, but Chichén Itzá's prominence lasted for less than 200 years and was eventually succeeded by Mayapán, which lasted as the capital of the Maya for nearly 225 years until the middle of the 15th century. The Mayans are still remembered and celebrated for their culture and their contributions to astronomy, language, and sports, and many of their advancements came with Mayapán as their capital. Early Mayapán was closely connected to the overshadowing power of the region at the time: the mighty trading city of Chichén Itzá. Mayapán emerged first as a minor settlement in the orbit of Chichén, but it slowly came to replace it after the larger city's trade connections with the Toltecs of Tula crumbled and it suffered a staggering defeat by Mayapán's armies. The building styles and art in their city show both admiring references to the great Chichén Itzá as well as an attempt to position Mayapán as a more orthodox heir of Maya tradition. At the same time, they emulated many features and could not escape the tremendous influences - especially in religion - of Chichén. This is seen in the fact that many of the most important buildings in the new city appear to be small-scale reproductions of ones in Chichén.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a summary, analysis, and review of The Splendid and the Vile and not the original book.  With a firm grasp of the British struggle under German aggression, Larson crafts a story of epic proportions, taking the listener on a journey of novel insight and unexpected emotion. It’s not about Churchill so much as his preservation of all that Britain valued as a civilization at the height of the Second World War.  What Does this Start Publishing Notes' Summary, Analysis, and Review Include? Summary of the original book Easily digestible takeaways distilling the main ideas An overview of key events in Germany's campaign against Britain A look at how Churchill's leadership saved the free world Editorial review & analysis Background on Erik Larson About the Original Book: Who knew that so much could happen over the course of twenty months in Great Britain? Erik Larson has managed to extrapolate a poignant rendition of 1940 to 1941, as the British Isles took a final stand for Europe, and the United States deliberated about whether to enter the war. It’s a little bit of history under a mountain of inspiration, where the leadership of heroes was only eclipsed by the bravery of those who followed them. You’ll laugh and cry, and you’ll certainly learn something about what it means to be human. DISCLAIMER: This book is intended as a companion to, not a replacement for, The Splendid and the Vile. Cover art for Legends of Hollywood: The Life of Claudette Colbert

Legends of Hollywood: The Life of Claudette Colbert

Summary

"I know what's best for me, after all I have been in the Claudette Colbert business longer than anybody." - Claudette Colbert The 1930s were the height of the classical Hollywood era, known for lavish studio productions by heavyweights like MGM, RKO, Warner Brothers, Paramount, and 20th Century Fox, which were operating at the height of their powers. Every major studio possessed a long roster of contract players, and films were released at such a rapid pace that it made for an especially competitive environment within the industry. Even while America remained in the throes of the Great Depression, the film industry continued to flourish, and movies easily supplanted the theater as the main attraction for American entertainment. Indeed, it would be no exaggeration to claim that the film industry reached its zenith during the decade precisely because it offered an affordable (if very temporary) escape from the anxieties of the economic woes of the era. Despite that competition, Hollywood's biggest star at the box office in 1938 was French actress Claudette Colbert, who had already won an Oscar for Best Actress in It Happened One Night (1934) and used her Broadway experience from the previous decade to become perhaps the industry's most famous screwball comedienne. The fact that Colbert had gotten that far was impressive, given that Hollywood loved to cast foreign actresses in stereotypical roles, and she once noted, "In the very beginning, they wanted to give me French roles...That's why I used to say my name Col-bert just as it is spelled instead of Col-baire. I did not want to be typed as 'that French girl.'"

There was a time when Sincero felt dissatisfied with her choices and her financial situation, but she managed to turn things around by examining different areas of her life with an open mind. She knows that you can, too. There's one prerequisite: belief. You need to sincerely believe that you have the power to change everything in your life with positive thoughts. You must also believe in God. This God doesn't need to be a formal religious figure; in fact, Sincero prefers to think of God using the vague spiritual term "Source Energy." To access Source Energy, you must think positive thoughts. Good thoughts attract good things; negative thoughts accomplish exactly the opposite.

American Legends: The Life of Brigham Young

Summary

"I know just as well what to teach this people and just what to say to them and what to do in order to bring them into the celestial kingdom.... I have never yet preached a sermon and sent it out to the children of men, that they may not call Scripture. Let me have the privilege of correcting a sermon, and it is as good Scripture as they deserve. The people have the oracles of God continually." - Brigham Young A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known. Next to Joseph Smith, Brigham Young is one of the best known Mormon leaders and perhaps the most important. After Smith's death, it was Young who led Mormon pioneers westward in a journey that the Latter Day Saints often likened to the Exodus, and Young became popular as "American Moses". At the same time, Young and his group were involved in a seemingly never ending list of controversies, both of their own making and the misconceptions of so many Americans who were unfamiliar with the religion. As Young's prominence and fame grew, people came from all over the world to meet the Mormon leader. And when they did, they met, by most accounts, an unremarkable man. He was handsome, of six feet height and a continual growth-of-girth over 200 pounds.

It is centered on the Tarahumara, an indigenous Mexican tribe known for their feats of long-distance running. McDougall, a journalist, is a low-key hobbyist runner himself, but he experiences numerous injuries that threaten to force him to stop. Given the high injury rate among runners, McDougall is fascinated by stories of the Mexican Tarahumara.
